I'm glad to see this; it'll probably be reversed, but my opinion is that those folks have been hit so hard, they shouldn't be denied the chance to work. NOT until the rigs have been thoroughly checked out, but a six-month moratorium just doesn't seem right to me. Getting off oil is more important...AND a thorough check-out of the Atlantis AND a permanent halt to the debacle of their proposed Alaskan idea.

A federal judge in New Orleans, Louisiana, has blocked a six-month federal moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf.

Several dozen plaintiffs had sued President Barack Obama's administration, arguing the ban would create long-term economic harm to their businesses. Obama ordered the moratorium after the April 20 explosion of an oil rig off Louisiana that killed 11 people and triggered an underwater oil gusher.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says the government will immediately appeal the ruling to the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

"The president strongly believes, as the Department of Interior and Department of Justice argued yesterday, that continuing to drill at these depths without knowing what happened is - does not make any sense and puts the safety of those involved, potentially puts safety of those on the rigs, and the safety of the environment and the Gulf at a danger that the president does not believe we can afford right now," Gibbs said

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

(Copied from my thread on this same topic)

As tempted as I am to cry foul, there may be legal or procedural issues with the way the President instituted his ban. I like to think that the judge is only considering the letter of the law, and is not bribed or otherwise influenced.

That having been said, this is a lamentable turn of events. We don't know the status of these other offshore rigs, and I'd like them to be carefully assessed before drilling resumes.

(additional commentary)

Niki,

We don't even have a regulatory agency yet that can properly assess the rigs. They're strill rebuilding the previous one. We haven't finished research into the full cause of the current disaster. I felt that a six month drilling moratorium was optimistic, in that we expected to have all inequities with all current platforms assessed and addressed in that short timeframe. I'm not even sure if that will be the case. With BP the guarantor of lost income due to their disaster, I'd have been quite content for the operations to remain stopped until everything was certified safe and good to go.

Ooops, I forgot that it's probably the old MMS who would inspect all of them, wouldn't it? In that case, may the moratorium continue, at least until all the rigs have been checked, and you're right, with revamping the agency, it probably WILL take longer. Damn.
