A man in a UAE police uniform is seen on the tape tying the victim’s arms and legs, and later holding him down as the Sheikh pours salt on the man’s wounds and then drives over him with his Mercedes SUV. Worse scenes are so horrific we can't show them on television. "A govt review found that all police rules were complied with." The chief of police is the brother of the torturer.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

"I'm sure that sometimes it seems as if... we're operating with one hand tied behind our back, or that those who would argue for a higher standard are naive. I understand that.

"What makes the United States special and what makes you special is precisely the fact that we are willing to uphold our values and our ideals even when it's hard, not just when it's easy; even when we are afraid and under threat, not just when it's expedient to do so."

This is an ideal I embrace.

I know the president is walking a tightrope in not pressing the prosecution of individuals who followed immoral orders. I know that it is disastrous to alienate your intelligence branch by prosecuting people who took actions that they were assured were legal and justified.

Yet even as I understand his dilemna, I am dismayed by some of his decisions.

I appreciate the man's ideals. I just wish he didn't fall shy of them.

This is the second disappointment for me. The first involved an illegal wiretapping vote.

I hope this president doesn't continue to undermine the fences that he is mending.
