Keep the Shiny side up

A while ago I posted some pictures of a pair of foxes who were hanging out in my back yard...

Well, it seems that they set up light housekeeping under my neighbor's porch, and produced a litter of fox kits.

Here they are in my driveway...

playing in my neighbor's yard...

and on my front walk.

There are six kits and mom and dad. Saw one of the kits today with a squirrel, so they're apparently learning to hunt pretty well. Expect they'll move down into the woods as soon as the kits get a bit bigger.

We usually see them early morning or late in the evening, but occasionally they're out during the day so I can get pictures.

Wow....foxes @ your front door. I just hope no neighbor ups and shoots 'em, or worse, tries to poison the whole family.

Pets, little kids in the area ? Won't take much for someone to find a reason.

Pets around here tend to be either indoors cats or leashed dogs, so no problem there. The neighbors I've talked to seem to have no problem with them.

The concern around here is that the foxes moved out of the woods to have their kits because they wanted to get away from the coyotes. Now those could hurt a child.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I am, of course, incredibly envious! At best we catch an occasional glimpse of foxes in this area, but they're very, very shy--with all the protected lands surrounding us, no surprise they avoid us.

Coyotes definitely can be a problem, good thing your neighbors keep their cats indoors and leash their dogs. Don't think there'd be a problem with the foxes, tho', actually, as foxes as a rule don't go after cats, much less dogs. With cats, they recognize a fellow predator and aren't that much bigger than most cats, so I've never heard of a fox taking a full-grown cat.

I'd bet money coyotes can find much easier prey than to come looking for fox kits...just guessing. Coyotes in the neighborhood can be a serious problem (they are down in So. Ca.), but even then, they rarely go after children.

Enjoy! In that one pic, it appears to be full daylight--that's very unusual, and what a treat! They're sooo adorable! Any and all pics MOST welcome, so I can enjoy vicariously! Thank you!

Cool pix!

I've only seen a red fox once, and it was so quick I blinked and it was gone. You're lucky to have such an extended look at them.
