Interesting piece!

Some of these could certainly make access to information much faster but it all still depends on how well it is handled by the receiving doctors. I like the heart attack warning technology and the portable hospital monitor. Portable ultrasound device, heart rate monitor and all goes through your cell phone? That's pretty impressive!

Still need to be able to actually get that direct communication with the doctor, though. Pre-arranged phone appointments, I guess. Could be a very efficient thing if done right.

I would have enjoyed the report more if it had been less "Dr. Eric Topol! Look at him riding his bike!" and more efficiently focused on the practical implications of his ideas, especially when he starts on medication. Vague phrases like "Patients need to take ownership of their health" aren't really... as specific as I'd like. But the man has a book to sell, so that explains it.

Seems you have a problem w/ the man who comes up w/ this idea, also having a book to sell. If his ideas result in very real benefits to patients and doctors, then so what ?

It's not like he's hyping up a non existent global crisis, for the sole benefit of becoming a multi billionaire, like some former politicians I know.

I don't have a problem with it. He seems to have good ideas, so go ahead. It just explains the particular person-focused nature of this news report and how they ended up touching on some things only vaguely.

There might be a good reason for such vagueness, if there's patent issues and cutting edge ideas that have yet to hit the market. But really , it seems to have more to do w/ the producer of the piece, and not so much the doctor himself.

To be honest, I wasn't sure whether you were questioning the guy's motives, for having a book to sell, OR the way in which nbc chose to present the story.

And I really do like the idea of patients taking control of their own health. To me, it means taking a more active role in one's own life, instead of a passive one. The idea that folks can monitor their vitals easier, cheaper, and don't have to rely on going in to see a doctor, only benefits everyone. Less traffic in the waiting rooms, gives doctors more time to see folks who need their care the most... seems like a win/win/win , all the way around.

I agree that the portability and this decentralized use of many of the monitoring devices are a fantastic feature because they are faster, make information more transparent for the patient and they disrupt normal life less. At risk patients could have reliable, detailed data available for medical staff anywhere they go, especially things that might not be immediately apparent in personal well-being. It'd be like carrying around a small hospital.

One issue with making all this information dependent on a cell phone and long-distance transmission might be privacy, considering how vulnerable cell phones can be to illegal spying. Another might be how well doctors can actually keep up with all the information being passed to them. Or how liability is handled when something goes wrong.
