How asinine is that? There's NOTHING he can be offered which the tea partiers will approve, and Obama won't budge on the tax hikes. He can't control his own party, so I don't see any deal raising revenues which they "can't refuse".

What the GOP has offered so far is a whole lot of nothing, with no details anyway.

They will...already have. The Orange Man is stuck, ANY revenue suggested will be refused by the Tea Partiers and ultra-conservatives in his caucus, as well as any who are afraid of being primaried by Grover Norquist. I don't know if there are enough who those DON'T apply to for him to get behind him.

And the Dems won't accept anything that doesn't offer SOME revenue or tax hikes--and without being specific about what loopholes and deductions...

Stalemate.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

As an aside, given the Godfather nature of the offer being requested, I think the fellow misunderstands exactly what it can mean to be given an offer you can't refuse.

The offer he can't refuse is already on the table. It's called the Fiscal Cliff. If he does nothing, if he refuses the other offers out there, this is the default setting.

He doesn't need to deliver his whole party to the vote; he just needs to peel off enough Republicans who don't want to go over the cliff, and convince them. He's never going to get the purists anyway.

And yes, there will be some who will face primary challengers in 2014, but if they're that weak, they were probably already going to be primaried anyway. 2014 might be a more Republican-friendly election cycle, being an "off-year" (non-presidential) election, which worked out well for conservatives in 2010, but if too many hard-right tea partiers are on the ticket, they still might find themselves getting beaten by moderate Democrats, or even (gasp!) actual progressives! Oh, the humanity...
