Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

You know, it would be nice if everyone stopped bandying "sociopath" around so much. It's a very explicit diagnosis, and there aren't that many actual sociopaths out there. Antisocial personality disorder does NOT necessarily make one a socipath; obviously no regular person can diagnose someone else; and there are many, many possible explanations for the woman your friend described--most of them having nothing to do with sociopathy.

So could I respectfully request that we please stop tossing that word around so casually? Byte is definitely not a sociopath, whatever she may want or need to think, and even psychiatrists are very careful about labeling anyone that.

Mental illness is no joke and shouldn't be spoken about haphazardly, in my opinion. It's like calling someone a "retard"...may be fun for the average person, but it's cruel and unfair to those who actually suffer from the disorder.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Niki. I looked online and everyone says that sociopath is just a layman's term for someone who has ASPD (as I suspected), it is not a different type of thing. I do tend to say "a person with Antisocial personality disorder" instead of "a sociopath", because I would rather say what the person has, as opposed to what a person "is". But everyone else is saying sociopath in this thread so I just sort of did what everyone else is doing, especially since that's the title of the thread.

"Layman's term" is the problem; people don't know what sociopathy IS, so they just toss the label around--I'd be willing to bet without even knowing what antisocial personality disorder is either. In my opinion, that doesn't excuse bandying it around by those of us who should know better, which only compounds the problem. Just my opinion.

Anti Social Personality Disorder is a DSM term. I don't think 'sociopath' in the DSM. Most medical professionals use DSM for diagnosis, but it doesn't mean the DSM is infallable. Far from it.
