Hey guys. This is the last one we'll see for a few years. Australia should get a good view tonight (and some warm temperatures), as should the western to midwest United States tomorrow morning (bundle up). If you're in the west and you have a flat horizon, look for the sun coming up as the moon sets - a phenomenon called selenehelion caused by the refraction of light through the atmosphere.

The eclipse will start 4:45 am pacific time, and turn fully red by 6:00 am. For Australians, the partial eclipse will start about 11:45 pm tonight in Melbourne, and turn red at 1 am.

Hello,

A red moon? That reminds me of an old PC game called "Under a Killing Moon" narrated by James Earl Jones.

He does a great reading from Poe for the opener.

Oh cool, that's during my work shift.

Poor little daywalkers, y'all miss out on some of natures glorious beauty which comes out after sundown.

And remember, not all flowers that bloom in the night are poisonous.

In case you miss it, it'll look something like this.

Also, here's a neat figure showing how it might look from the moon, and explaining why the moon in Earth's shadow looks red.

The basic gist is, imagine all the light from sunsets or sunrises from around the world are the only light hitting the moon. (Sunsets and sunrises are often orange, red, or gold because of refraction in the Earth's atmosphere. Same thing happens here)

Yup, I'll be up and watching. I might even post a pic if I can manage it. Only there may be cloud cover.

Nice!

I slept through it. :( I guess I was tired.

At least I won't sleep through the 2017 solar eclipse.

Aw.

Maybe Frem had more luck. Or Niki or Haken. They probably should have had a good view too.

It was really clear here this morning, I'm kicking myself for missing it.

Indeed, CAVU(1) conditions, and pretty - definately worth watching, although I was careful not to get too distracted from my job, as well.

(1)(aerospace engineering) An operational term commonly used in aviation, which designates a condition wherein the ceiling is more than 10,000 feet (3048 meters) and the visibility is more than 10 miles (16 kilometers). Derived from ceiling and visibility unlimited.

Too early in the morning for me, I did see a lunar eclipse when I was 10, it was cool. I'm holding out for 2017, its one of my goals in life to see a full solar eclipse. We had a partial when I was in elementary school but I couldn't really see it, it just looked cloudy to me, because it was cloudy that day.
