Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Oh, now that's not fair at ALL! Forbidden Planet was okay, but Airplane! and everything he did after that was GENIUS! That's what I'll remember him for. He seemed like a nice guy, too, in interviews.

He had never played a comedic role prior to Airplane, but said in an interview that comedy was a part of himself he kept hidden (not surprisingly, since given his looks he was better suited to leading man, in Hollywood mentality). He carried a whoopie cushion around and would razz people with it. Here he is putting "one" over on a British interview:

Saw a video clip last night of an interview; interviewer asked what he'd want his epitaph to be. Neilse replied with a smile "Let'er rip!" <>

People with a sense of humor are treasures we should always regret losing!

And who doesn't want to take their hat off to Airplane!, huh? I'd never seen Jaws when I first saw Airplane! in the theater, but I knew instantly what that intro was. I swear to gawd, I started laughing so hard, and I NEVER stopped laughing for the rest of the movie. That's never happened to me before. That and Star Wars gave me two of the most memorable reactions I ever had to movies in my life. Oh, and Color Purple (but I'm not sure crying all the way through a movie is something to remember).

So here's a toast to Leslie, and all the laughs he brought us...!

Y'know, I wasn't really even sad when I heard that he'd died. I smiled, thinking of all the really funny stuff he did, and thought, "Now THAT guy had one HELL of a full life!" Eighty-four. Ain't nothin' to be sad about.

And I would love to be at his funeral, because I'd bet it's going to be a laugh riot.

Yes. Forbidden Planet was awesome. The thing is, you sort of have to be a Leslie Nielsen Geek to think of Forbidden Planet instead of Airplane or Naked Gun.

I thought it was interesting that he did this routine backstage for 20 years before it occurred to anyone that it was a marketable talent.

Hello,

The man was an excellent comedian. On the other hand, I really liked Forbidden Planet.

(It was the most sci-fi of the sci-fi movies in its era and even most other eras. A serious attempt at exploring serious themes in the venue of the fantastic.)

I always felt sad that after he started doing comedy, he was mostly done with anything serious. It's as though he was stamped forever.

I don't think he minded it, but I felt we all missed out on enjoying his other levels.
