Hello,

I bet this sort of thing is going to happen with increased frequency. It's easy to bury big budget items and high salaries when things are going well. When things get tight, however, the bulges start to show.

I've said it before, will say it again, will be argued with (probably)...

Follow the money.

Every "official" should be forced to make public their salaries.

How much does the mayor of Detroit make? How much does the Police Chief of Maryland make?

Start asking these questions, get the answers and compare that to how they are actually living.

Can a civil servant who is suppossed to be making 35 grand a year, REALLY afford the 3 million dollar home and the 2 Bimmers they have? No?

Then where is the money coming from?

Or. Why are we paying, thru our taxes, a salary for a city council member that is over 300 grand?

Boy, I wish there were some actual reporters who would look into this stuff everywhere...

Hello,

All official salaries are ostensibly available to the public. Unfortunately, the people who are supposed to check the people for misusing the money of the people are some of the same people who are stealing the people's money.

You are right, some good reporters could blow this stuff wide open, probably in nearly every layer of government across the nation. However, most reporters seem to be in a symbiosis with the government, and become part of the mechanism of obfuscation.

I think the only reason this is coming out now is because money is tight, and the 'wrong' sorts of people are starting to look in the 'wrong' sorts of places. Having to tighten the belt makes folks angry, and angry folks start paying attention to what's going on around them. Even people on the inside can start chewing up the system when things get bad, because their project suffers funding cuts while the fatter cats pocket vast sums of wealth.
