Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia...

...this is going to have enormous implications, considering that G.W. Bush has already had the chance to appoint one new Justice.

I never thought I'd be sorry to see him go. Oh well at least I'm in driving distance to Mexico.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

The one GOOD thing is maybe Democrats will find enough political cover from the Katrina disaster to stuff their deflated political bodies and create a semblance of spine. (Not all Democrats are spineless, but the DLC - including Hillary- is a joke.)

Please don't think they give a shit.

Not surprised you consider the Katrina disaster a "GOOD thing" as long as it helps your agenda. Am surprised you'd come right out and say it.

Keep the Shiny side up

Now that Bush has tapped Roberts to replace Rehnquist as Chief Justice, it's pretty much a Conservative wash, whereas Roberts for O'Connor would have been conservative for centrist. It'll be interesting to see who's nominated to fill O'Connor's spot now. Bush could go with another conservative, or use this as an opportunity to play to pick up minority votes for the Republican party with a centrist Black or Hispanic.

I suspect that the Dems in congress will let a Roberts for Rehnquist swap go by pretty smoothly and save their powder for whoever is nominated to replace O'Connor, assuming it's someone pretty far right.
