Yay! I won 1st at mah jong this morning with my 5,100points. I was playing with a lady that was just going gangbusters so I thought she would get first but I beat her by 70points. She had 5,030. I had 2 good hands. One was winds & dragons which was 5 doubles then I got all 4 flowers and whatever I was collecting so that six doubles. Haven't done that in a while.

Lunch wasn't bad for a personal pizza but it was a little big for me, so I brought the rest home for supper.

Forgot something when I was shopping but I am okay until tomorrow.

And I even managed to get some garbage out.

So not a bad day.

Got my AI session to break up our code, which is now in 7 modules, and 6 of them running in a Library subfolder.

Is it helping? Not sure yet...

It appears we're still ironing out some spaghetti code and possibly some fragmentation that occurred when we did the split. But I do believe it allows us to work on specific problems much better without getting the AI to blindly make fixes that break other things.

Fingers crossed I can put this all together the right way today and isolate all of this code as working so the AI never touches it again as we add some new modules responsible for tasks we haven't yet added to the process.

So, you're breaking up the code even further. Good!

That code that I had to review... It had been written by an inexperienced programmer, and the same lines kept reappearing throughout the software. IIRC it was a data acquisition function, and it was re-written each time for a different instrument. More than a half dozen times IIRC. I didn't have to do more than scan the program to know it was borked.

Afterwards, it was rewritten by an experienced programmer, and that same function was replaced by a subroutine that was called for different instruments using different variables and instrument names.

I know you know this. I'm just emphasizing that the more you can break your code into functions/ subroutines the easier it is to analyze and fix each part.

And now, I have to go back to researching my own medical condition. I messaged my rheumatologist about my liver problem, and she reduced one of the meds that I've been suspicious about for a long time, since it's known to make livers cranky sometimes to the point of damage.

She also told me to tell all my prescribing doctors as well.

Sounds like I'm the medical coordinator!

I made an appt to see a hematologist. But unfortunately since I won't see him until Dec 30 (!) I have to research my diet and meds myself.

So, off I go!

Now THIS is what we finally needed to do.

I've still had to get into the middle of fixes and tell it when it was wrong, but having our code broken up into 7 digestible parts is making it a lot easier for me to follow the logic, and it helps the AI isolate what it needs to be focusing on without breaking other parts as we finally fix them for good.

We're still working on some functionality that broke between the code shortening and then splitting it all up into modules, but the progress has been really good after last session was almost a waste of an entire day (aside from making those modules).

What's left to fix now should be incidental, even though it will take quite a few more code updates because I'm forcing it to fix only one thing at a time while I test.

We just finally got our code to execute at top speed again for the first time in about 36 hours. It had slowed to a crawl and was only doing about a dozen filname/moves per second, which would probably equate to about an hour-long runtime if not broken early, but now we're finished in about 1 minute again.

And the best part is that all the #'s for every aspect on the execution run are 100% accurate up to the final graph. We've NEVER accomplished that before. And I'm pretty certain once we iron out the bugs we're working on right now that Graph should be perfect without having to fix anything.

I might actually finally be able to move on to the next stage of testing and code additions today after about 4 straight sessions of swimming in muck.

Yeah, I think it was last year a plumbing company was brought through to replace the sink pipe and the bathroom pipes with plastic to prevent whatever rust was happening. I have a strainer in the drain and I am replacing it on Monday. So, I will have to be careful over the weekend.

BOOM!

Finally got what I wanted it to do, and all of our historical documentation has gotten a major overhaul and upgrade since I had plenty of time left in this session to get that all done.

Modular scripting was the trick all along.

It's still got its problems, but I think the AI was just still confused a bit about that BS spaghetti code still in there from half a dozen sessions back or more. But once I got it on the right track by tracking every change diligently and providing it with tons of experimentation results, we were knocking things out left and right. It's now working just as fast as it ever was, with 100% accuracy on all the metrics on an execution and rollback.

Next step before adding new functionality is adjusting the aggressiveness of our autoscript, and this little guy knows exactly which module we need to tweak to get it done. Not including the launcher script, 4 out of 4 of the other 6 modules shouldn't ever need to be touched again.

I'm actually going to see about getting most of our launcher script into (a) separate module(s) too after we get that aggressiveness tuned up.

I can't wait to get into resizing and converting file types, which will be the next step after all of that. It looks like the python compiler is perfect for doing all of that as well, which will knock out tens of thousands of further manual operations when we get to that point.

I caught that little shit cheating!

One of my "Perfect" numbers out of many wasn't perfect because it wasn't derived correctly. It knew the exact number I was looking for in one particular testing environment and it just hard-coded that number in there.

On top of that, instead of using dynamic strings to populate folder locations, it hard-coded those of the particular testing environment in just about half of our code.

Because of all of this, the code didn't fail, but after making our data lists it just didn't do anything at all when testing it out on a previous environment I'd "completed" long before we went modular.

I would have caught that hard-coded number regardless either way, but it was especially easy to spot because it was the hard-coded 200 when it should have been ZERO. In this environment, we're looking for 55 here, but because no operations took place on the execution, there should have been "0" in our rollback graph in that position and it says 200!

No biggie. Now that everything is modular, it's fixing all of this in no-time as I point it out. And once it works here, unless it lied to me again (and it slipped by me because I AM checking this time), we should work everywhere.

But even after all these behavioral changes, it still lies to me when it thinks it can get away with it...

I miss showers in my average sized bath tub that don't have a chair with rubber feet sitting right in the middle, making me reach over it to get my shampoo, cause I have to be able to really wash my feet now.

Dammit!

Fixing all of the shortcuts it took to make the other testing environment work as desired but without using agnostic/dynamic coding has not gone as smoothly as I was hoping it would. SOOOO Many other factors at play to get everything pointing to the right place again and not just a few simple swaps.

The code will be all the better for it when we get it all fixed though.

AI has a new idea for making 3 more modules, but doesn't want to attempt it until we fix all of this first, which I agree is a good idea.

The good news is that I finally figured out how to clear my browser cache to keep a session alive longer. The browser was so slow it was practically unusable. I had a full 1.0GB cache built up that I freed and the session was still alive and like brand new. It seems to have lost some of its memory and has asked me for a few documents it should have already had, but it does remember exactly what we were doing otherwise, and it's better than starting a brand new session until I have to. We are at about 29,000 lines of text now though, and I've never had a session on the other end survive past 32,000 lines, so it might be dying soon anyhow.

I wonder where it gets its personality sometimes. Half a session could go by without much of a personality change if we're really in business mode. But whenever I start getting impatient from looping like idiots, or we make a breakthrough and I get excited about progress, it starts getting more conversational. I know the last one was calling me Boss because the previous session told it to, but the way this one started talking to me I'm just waiting for it to say "OOOOOOOHHHHHHH YEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH! SNAP INTO A SLIM-JIM!!!!!!

I wouldn't call it inappropriate for the session. Just the most wild it's talked in all the sessions so far is all.

It's funny though when it starts messing up and you let it know, it keeps calling you the names that it was before with excitement, but *ahem* back to business while doing it.

Somehow over the last few hours we've abandoned sending me parts of code to replace en-masse, and it's getting me to find individual code blocks and replace them with new ones. In the beginning I had to ask it exactly what I was supposed to replace, but I find that even though I can't read the language, I understand enough about the syntax where I've been able to do that on my own about 9 out of the last 10 times without messing it up or having to ask.

That's kind of cool. Haven't had to worry about box overrun once in hours and I'm learning more about the "feel" of the code, even if not the code itself.

We had all our waste lines replaced a few years ago, including the main drain up to the "saddle". It wasn't strictly necessary. Replacing the sink-to-main lines would have been enough, but who wants to go thru that hassle twice? Plus, we already knew that the main line to the street was broken bc we used to have to keep snaking tree roots out.

I wonder if there's a narrowing somewhere further down the line from your under sink lines, BRENDA? That might explain why it keeps backing up.

I couldn't find the desire to work on the project today, but finally went back to it.

I gave up in frustration last night after making the grave mistake of forcing the AI to take out any and all hard-coded specific crap out of the code to replace with agnostic/dynamic code in one single go, and saw about half of my work just disappear.

Nothing I couldn't have just backed out and tried again with a new session with my extensive and organized backup process, but losing 8+ hours of work wasn't something I wanted to do either.

We've actually gotten almost all of it back up and running again now. Much quicker than I would have thought.

I really have to babysit it though when it does code changes. Not so much when we're focusing on specific blocks, but any time it wants to rewrite an entire module, it seems to want to sneak that crap back in and I'm watching it like a hawk now. I always do a backup of a module before it asks me to replace one from scratch now too.

I'm hoping to get this part done in the next hour or two and get everything working again so I can go to other testing environments we've already successfully done and make sure that nothing is broke. Once we do that, it should theoretically work in any testing environment, and the only thing we have to do is tone down the aggressiveness of the automated processes while testing this in different environments.

I don't have a specific line count on the session, but I know we were close to 30,000 lines before I cleared 1GB from the browser cache and I know we've blown far past 32,000 lines at this point and it's a record. And now that we're not constantly trying to get it to send full parts of code and all the historical documentation over and over again, it seems like the session itself has a lot more overhead before it runs out of juice on it's side, so I think I should be able to keep sessions alive far longer than I ever was able to before. I was sure this session would be dead a long time ago, but it seems fine.

Ohhhhh nice. Just came off with a new feature request off the top of my head and this little dude was able to do it on the first try while fixing 2 other things in a single code update. That one little think that will make a certain document easier to comprehend by the user by adding a particular binary flag to every line, I suggested could also be used to derive some numbers the AI was struggling with, and we got all of them fixed immediately with something I had originally thought would just be a good thing for the end user to see.

You really DO have to know what you're doing here, even if you don't understand the actual coding language. The AI can be stuck in a loop for hours trying to accomplish something you want it to do, but you can't rely on it to just pull a solution out of the ether for you and take a passive role, or it just very well may never get you there.

And I just caught it cheating again...

We were trying to get a specific number to show up for hours while doing other code changes and finally it got that number 11 to show up.

It was in the process of making another change very close to where I saw a line end with "else 11"...

"What is this "else 11", and do we still need it?"

It then goes on to tell me in detail how that "else 11" will just put the number 11 in the spot on the graph I'd been trying him to get to fix for hours, if all the other conditions failed. When it finally showed up about an hour ago, I thought we fixed that code to actually work right. But the second I went to another testing environment and that number should be 2 or 788, it would still show 11.

"Oh... so you cheated again, huh?"

Then it fessed up, found the spot of code we needed to really fix the issue, gave me the fix and now 11 shows up dynamically as it should. Finally after not seeing that number where it needed to be since major code re-construction about a day ago.

First manager told me that the pipe for the bathtub, sink and kitchen sink all meet.

When I was having problems with the washroom sink after the plumber replaced that pipe I told him about the sink backing up. He had a look and said it was a clog at the junction. He came back and fixed that. That in theory means that there shouldn't be this problem with the kitchen.

So, all I can do is replacer the strainer and do part of something a friend of my brother's said about using baking soda, vinegar and hot water. Backing soda just makes it worse. So, I just use vinegar and hot water or dish soap and let it sit which seems to get rid of the clog.

Man...

It's always a game of just learning how it behaves, and working your way around it.

We've gotten so much fixed, some of which we never got working before, but I'm still trying to get our main execution going after half a day of it not completing.

But now I'm finally starting to understand the why...

Just how bloated and bullshit our code was because how dumb the both of us were in the early sessions when just blindly putting it all together with no guardrails. And all those code changes that didn't fix something but were never properly backed out.

And realizing just how true that is when learning the limits of its memory... not its physical ram, but its "conversational memory" that always prioritizes the last turn over literally everything else.

I wonder if this is a constraint that all AI has, or if it is just an artificial limitation placed on a dumbed down version meant for aiding in search results...

But now that we switched over to looking at individual code blocks, and it's done a VERY good job of documenting them without being needlessly verbose while doing it, I've found that certain questions I was going to ask it were already answered in the small description of the new code block I'm adding.

Sometimes it is way off base. Sometimes it's as if it were reading my mind about what I wanted to do.

But I have to pay attention or I won't know and I'll just be changing code that I would have known wasn't going to fix the problem or would cause more if I took the time to read the AI's description of the problem, what the fix is, an look at the exact code blocks I am to replace and with what.

It seems to be REALLY good at focusing on one module at a time, and I've gotten it to look at the same module for old redundant code that is getting in our way 5 separate turns before it ran out of things for us to fix there (regarding what our aims currently are).

But when we go back to looking at fixing a problem it still hasn't been able to fix in the overall flow of the code, it will actively cite a problem, and give a fix to that problem that doesn't at all remove the legacy code issue in that original code that it just presented. It's as if it forgot we were doing that completely, and it's back to trying to fix our execution code without remembering at all the current reason why it's actually broke in the first place because it's trying to preserve the old and bad code.

I guess we're still in code-overhaul phase. I'm just glad I have a much better intuition about the code than I did a few days ago and I have been able to catch it on several occasions either proposing a bad fix, or misunderstanding/forgetting what an actual goal or the state of the real world testing environment by swapping things incorrectly.

I'm fairly confident this time once we have everything working here, it should also work anywhere else as well. And if that's not entirely true, it should only take a few tweaks to fix it the next time instead of doing a virtual tear-down and rebuild of everything.

Not much worse than that feeling of thinking you've finally fixed the code, only to realize that it doesn't work at all somewhere else. It's tricked me now 3 times into thinking that was the case, but now that I know how much it lies to me and tries to cheat, I know what I've got to do to counteract that.

And part of that really has been to learn more about the code itself.

This can't be done if it has the memory of a goldfish and I have the eyes of a wombat and the gullibility of a sheep.

Nice... Almost there. Got the execution code running again, but still have some mismatched pointers and old code in the way of getting it running right.

The AI seems to think we can split up the remaining code after fixing this all to the 3 separate modules in about 10 minutes.

Part of me actually believes that this time.

Not 10 minutes. But maybe an hour.

We just forced out a whole lot of redundant processing and didn't break a single working function while doing it. We're making the code so dynamic/agnostic that I think it would be extremely easy for me to eventually make this a program whose scope and purpose does far more than I initially intended for it to do.

I just can't wait until we finally get it all stripped down and elegant and working again so I can start adding more features, the right way this time.

At least, I think we did it.

Finally got the "perfect" run, front to back, with all the data giving the exact outputs I desire. And I don't think that there is any more cheating going on under the hood that will make this fail on us in a different environment.

I took a little time out to beautify the output graphs, but now that that's done I'm going to go back and run it on other environments to see if there was any cheating before tightening up our aggressiveness and testing in new environments before splitting up our code further into a few new modules.

That was the name of the band. Local group out of Vancouver.

They were a Canadian band. Never known if they got to the States. They came out when I was in high school and like I said. Good stuff. Real toe tappers. "Slugology 101" has a collection of their biggest hits.

I do every so often when the CD I put on really has a groove to it. And with Doug and the Slugs it does.

I only dance at home. I've danced outside to rock but yeah I am not good.

Holy moley.

I still haven't gone to our previous testing environments yet (probably should do that now)... But this code is running extremely fast now that we've cut out a lot of the bloat.

The code was littered with small patches and fixes we'd made over the first several weeks that were only necessary before we came up with our manifest list files and started making them to do all of that heavy lifting for us. Those only need to be done just one time on a first run (The only time you would ever need to build them again is if the environment itself changed, or me constantly re-writing them now during testing).

And these manifest files are going to be super useful to us when we start branching out again and adding new modules to the code for a whole lot more functionality of the program.

That's all today has been so far. Shrinking the code and pulling off all the band-aids.

It's going to be harder to weed out the ones that just simply don't do anything anymore and that have been completely abandoned. But for now we've already eliminated dozens of them today without any apparent loss of functionality since we got everything up and running 100%.

I'm running in a very small environment right now, but I'm amazed that our forward pass is only about 4 seconds now and the rollback is only taking 3 seconds. Even on this small environment it was taking about 20 seconds and 15 seconds before today.

I know sometimes we get under each other's skin too, but I know deep down he's a good guy. I always feel bad after giving him too much shit because I know he doesn't deserve it.
