The US state department failed to fully investigate allegations against its officials involving prostitution, a drug ring and assault, media report.

A leaked internal document obtained by CBS News said staff protecting ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton regularly solicited sex workers.

The reports also allege a drug ring may have provided narcotics to state department contractors in Iraq.

But it is suggested officials may have tried to cover up the misconduct.

According to CBS, a draft copy of a state department inspector general's report alleges eight specific examples of improper behaviour by US officials.

'Criminal behavior'

Some allegations were suppressed, according to CBS, such as an investigation into an unnamed ambassador who was said to be visiting prostitutes in a public park.

The document cites allegations that the envoy "routinely ditched his protective security detail in order to solicit sexual favors from both prostitutes and minor children".

It went on to say that the ambassador's security team and other colleagues "were well aware of the behavior", according to the reports.

CBS reports that attempts to look into the allegations were stopped in their tracks.

According to the broadcaster, the copy of the draft report said: "Hindering such cases calls into question the integrity of the investigative process, can result in counterintelligence vulnerabilities and can allow criminal behavior to continue."

CNN also reports that the inspector general found an attempt to investigate claims that a drug ring near the US embassy in Baghdad was supplying illegal substances to state department security contractors was stopped.

It was also alleged that a state department security official in Beirut "engaged in sexual assaults" against foreign nationals hired as embassy guards. The same person was accused of similar attacks during previous foreign postings, according to CNN.

Meanwhile, members of Mrs Clinton's security detail solicited prostitutes on official trips, a problem the leaked report is said to have described as "endemic".

Aurelia Fedenisn, who was an investigator with the state department's inspector general, told CBS: "We also uncovered several allegations of criminal wrongdoing in cases, some of which never became cases."

The inspector general's office has reportedly asked external law enforcement experts to look at the way the state department handles complaints of serious misconduct by its senior staff.

Findings are expected later in the summer.

State department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said: "We take allegations of misconduct seriously and we investigate thoroughly.

"All cases mentioned in the CBS report were thoroughly investigated and under investigation, and the department continues to take action."

And a followup...

Whistle-blower Aurelia Fedenisn says State Department investigators threatened to prosecute her for providing documents to U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.

A State Department whistle-blower says she was threatened after turning over documents to a U.S. senator that alleged coverups of investigations into employee use of drugs and prostitutes, her lawyer says.

The whistle-blower's allegations have led lawmakers on Capitol Hill to look into whether the State Department squelched investigations into criminal behavior by employees, including an ambassador who allegedly propositioned prostitutes in a Belgian city park.

Rep. Ed Royce, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sent a letter Tuesday to Secretary of State John Kerry asking for a briefing about the allegations detailed in recent news reports.

"The notion that any or all of these cases would not be investigated thoroughly by the Department is unacceptable," Royce said in the letter.

The allegations were revealed after Aurelia Fedenisn, a former investigator at the State Department's Office of the Inspector General, complained to Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, that senior State Department officials interfered with investigations she was involved in, and then caused a report about the interference to be watered down.

Dallas lawyer Damon Mathias, who represents Fedenisn, said Fedenisn hired him after two diplomatic security agents spoke in a threatening manner to her teenage children at her home in a Virginia suburb of Washington. The agents arrived at the home to talk to Fedenisn about documents Fedenisn had given to Cruz and told the teens that they demanded to speak to their mom immediately, Mathias said.

Royce said he instructed his staff to investigate. At least one other committee is also investigating, according to a senior congressional staffer who was not authorized to speak on the record.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters Tuesday that the allegations are based on a memo that was written "without the benefit of reviewing any case files, (and) included a number of unsubstantiated accusations."

"The notion that we would not vigorously pursue criminal misconduct is not only preposterous, it's inaccurate," Psaki said.

Fedenisn had turned to Cruz after she learned that an investigative report she helped write before she retired in December lacked many investigative details when it was published in February, Mathias said.

Mathias says Fedenisn's claim is that agents from State's Diplomatic Security and other divisions engaged in very questionable and possibly criminal conduct; the Inspector General has been hampered in performing its oversight role; "and the findings they wanted to put in the report end up being left out," Mathias said. "So you have a coverup of the coverup."

When Fedenisn and her lawyers met with lawyers for the Office of the Inspector General, the government lawyers demanded she hand over the documents or they would refer the matter to the Department of Justice and Fedenisn would face criminal prosecution, Mathias said.

"They made it clear that they would go after her criminally," he said.

"We refused to turn over the documents" and Fedenisn is now seeking whistle-blower protection, he said.

According to CBS News, which obtained copies of the documents Fedenisn provided to Cruz, they include a memo by the State Department's Office of the Inspector General that cites eight investigations that were "influenced, manipulated, or simply called off" during the tenure of former secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Among the allegations CBS reported:

• A State Department security official in Beirut sexually assaulted foreign employees working as embassy guards.

• Criminal gangs sold drugs to diplomatic security personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

• Members of Clinton's security detail hired prostitutes while on official trips overseas.

Fedenisn told CBS those investigations were called off under pressure from senior State Department officials.

In another case, an investigation was called off into allegations that a U.S. ambassador was suspected of soliciting prostitutes in a park in Brussels, CBS reported.

The New York Post identified that ambassador as Howard Gutman, a bundler who raised $500,000 for President Obama's 2008 campaign. Gutman issued a statement Tuesday calling the allegations "baseless."

"To watch the four years I have proudly served in Belgium smeared is devastating," Gutman said. "I live on a beautiful park in Brussels that you walk through to get to many locations and at no point have I ever engaged in any improper activity."

Another allegation described in the Inspector General's memo says Clinton's chief of staff, Cheryl Mills, put the kibosh on an investigation involving Obama's nominee to be U.S. ambassador to Iraq, according to the New York Post. Members of State's Special Investigations Division never interviewed the nominee, Brett McGurk, about sexually charged e-mails between him and Wall Street Journal reporter Gina Chon because Mills intervened, the report says.

Mills advised McGurk to withdraw his name from consideration and the investigation was dropped, according to the memo.

Did you ever watch a show called "The League" about friends who play fantasy football?

I always thought those guys were going to break out and be doing other stuff after the show, but except for the Jewish guy who was in that awful Geico Caveman show years ago, I really didn't see too much of them. The one guy who seemed like the main character in the first season was in the indie "Creep" movies that weren't half bad, but that's about it.

I just found out that one of the funniest guys on that show got caught lying about 9/11 and that's why he disappeared. He was on some podcast and just stupidly said that he was in one of the buildings that morning but he'd gotten out before anything bad happened. I think he said he was on the lower floors in the 2nd building and he got out to see what happened after the first crash.

He knows that it was the stupidest thing he'd ever said in his life and after like 10 seconds had gone by and he didn't find a way to make that a joke or force himself to pull the reins on that and face some instant embarrassment for saying something so stupid, he was mortified when he realized he was stuck living that lie. He had to keep going with it and even got some sponsorships out of the bump in name recognition from the media too. Maybe Buffalo Wild Wings commercials? I think one or two others that would cater to the same demo.

Months or maybe even years later somebody decided to look into it. It turns out that he totally pulled the name of one of the Big Banks out of his ass and said he worked there, and it turned out that the bank didn't have a spot in the Twin Towers.

Oh... shit.

He lost everything and had to go back to doing standup at any of the local hole in the wall clubs that would take him like when he started doing stand up.

I didn't even know anything about that because I'm so out of the sports and entertainment loop.

I feel bad for the dude. He was a grown ass man and should have known better, but who knows... He could have been a little drunk on that podcast and just let that one out like he was in his own livingroom with company instead of on a podcast with a couple thousand people listening to live. Years later, somebody does the laziest amount of digging to uncover your dumbass in-the-moment lie from the past, the biggest mistake you've ever made in your life gets exposed to the world, and then the media pounces and suddenly everybody who owns a shiny rectangle is hating on you for the next week.

But hey... at least that guilt finally found a release valve. He lost everything, but he finally lost that guilt and that secret he'd been carrying to himself for all that time.

Man... you could never pay me enough to be famous. And he was on the short end of a couple of spectrum there too. To be famous enough for people to recognize your face even if they don't know your name, never famous enough to make any real money, and now suddenly the world knows your name overnight and hates you for saying something stupid.

I dunno man...

I think everybody needs to watch the Bees episode of Black Mirror again.

The internet made everybody except for Brenda awful.
