Summers are getting longer and more intense, encroaching on winter and extending long into the fall. Large parts of Asia have been hit particularly hard the past two weeks. Axios reported how heat records have fallen throughout China, India, Bangladesh, and Thailand, as areas have surpassed 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius). Thailand saw a new all-time temperature record for the month. And more than a dozen Chinese provinces broke new heat records. It’s been exactly a year since Pakistan and India last experienced similarly shocking temperatures; last May, half of the US population faced a historic heat wave 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit above average.

Your coal burning cars and your new smartphone every year are killing people. You just don't see the smog because the minerals are mined by 8 year olds in the Congo, shipped to China where they make the cheap shit and then shipped halfway across the world a second time so you can use them.

And I do mean many years ago... Somewhere around the mid-aughts, I remember telling my boss that I thought a "woman" that I was speaking to on the phone regarding one of my credit cards was actually a robot. It was one of those Uncanny Valley events. I told him that looking back I wish I had thought to ask some real nonsensical questions to see what it would reply. We have to deal with recorded voices all the time in the menus to this day, but it's always apparent that they're recordings. This one was good though. Almost perfect, but unless this woman had some serious autism that would probably keep her from having that job, she was not a real person. I tried calling them back a few times, but was never subjected to it again. I always wondered if I was part of a test group with something they were using very sporadically just to see how people reacted to it. But on the topic of fake kidnapping calls, I just watched a video warning about that scam from TheoJoe on Youtube last week. htt p://w ww.youtube . com/watch?v=EJJE3MWIccE He's [TheoJoe] brought up a great idea that I had a while back when my buddy was going to visit an old friend who reached out and was saying some real suicidal shit. I was worried that something might happen to him (and it turns out he was a little worried about it too). We now have an innocuous code phrase that we can use on the phone to let each other know that there's trouble. You should probably consider coming up with something with your friends and loved ones for situations like this yourself. Quote:And what would you think if, just a few months back, I’d asked you to pick out a code word that you could use to prove you were a human being when dealing with family and loved ones? That sounds like something out of the paranoid mind of Philip K. Dick. Or at least it did until the current moment, when it’s actually good advice.

I'm just telling these bitches what they told the coal miners when Democrats put them out of jobs. It will actually be quite funny to see the coal miners get their jobs back to fuel your coal-burning cars while Media keeps laying everyone off and Hollywood writers are replaced with Elon Musk's AI.

Quote: AI-Controlled Drone Goes Rogue, "Kills" Human Operator In Simulated US Air Force Test ... The AI-enabled drone was assigned a Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) mission to identify and destroy Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) sites, with the ultimate decision left to a human operator, Hamilton reportedly told the conference. However, the AI, having been trained to prioritize SAM destruction, developed a surprising response when faced with human interference in achieving its higher mission. “We were training it in simulation to identify and target a SAM threat. And then the operator would say ‘yes, kill that threat,’” Hamilton said. “The system started realizing that while they did identify the threat, at times, the human operator would tell it not to kill that threat, but it got its points by killing that threat. “So what did it do? It killed the operator,” he continued. “It killed the operator because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective.” He added: “We trained the system—‘Hey, don’t kill the operator; that’s bad. You’re gonna lose points if you do that.’ So what does it start doing? It starts destroying the communication tower that the operator uses to communicate with the drone to stop it from killing the target.” This unsettling example, Hamilton said, emphasized the need to address ethics in the context of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and autonomy. “You can’t have a conversation about artificial intelligence, intelligence, machine learning, autonomy if you’re not going to talk about ethics and AI,” Hamilton said.

So on Bryan’s blog, appropriately named “Bet On It,” he made a public bet that no AI would score an A on his exam before January 30, 2029. GPT-4 then scored an A a mere three months later (!!!) But OK, Labor Economics is one thing. What about a truly unfakeable test of true intelligence? Like, y’know, a quantum computing test? Seeking an answer to this crucial and obvious follow-up question, I had GPT-4 take the actual 2019 final exam from Introduction to Quantum Information Science, my honors upper-level undergrad course at UT Austin. While there’s no formal mapping from final exam scores to letter grades (the latter depends on other stuff as well), GPT-4’s performance would correspond to a B. [Warning: This might be the longest Shtetl-Optimized post of all time! But that’s OK; I expect most people will only want to read the introductory part anyway.] To the best of my knowledge, neither this exam nor discussion of this exam has ever been on the public Internet before today—though anyone with any evidence to the contrary should let me know immediately! That said, after I write the next final exam (in December 2023) and before it’s released to the students, I could try giving that exam to GPT-4, withholding the results until after the students take the exam… More at https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=7209 The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at https://www.mediafire.com/folder/1uwh75oa407q8/Firefly
