Putin's Legacy? To turn Russia into a Joke?

Today's big *Victory Day* parade was missing one thing that was on the program: no jet fly over. Why? "Bad weather" was the report even though you can see sunny skies in the videos.

Putin's spokesman said the Victory Day aerial display was called off due to bad weather.

However, weather forecasts over Moscow during the parade forecast sunny skies and wind at 5 mph.

The "Z" formation was seen in television reports showing preparation for the May 9 parade.

Russia was expected to use its Victory Day celebrations to flex its aerial might, but a planned aerial demonstration over Moscow was called off suddenly on Monday, according to authorities, because of inclement weather.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, told local media outlet Kommersant that the aerial segment of the ceremony was canceled because of "bad weather."

However, during Putin's speech at just past 10 a.m. local time, an AccuWeather reading of the local weather in Russia showed "mostly sunny" weather in Moscow, with "excellent" air quality. The Accuweather forecast for the rest of the day indicated that it would be "mostly sunny," with some clouds, and that wind speed was around 5 mph.

The May 9 Victory Parade, which marks the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany, was scaled down by around a third this year but was still expected to include an aerial show of planes pulling into a "Z" formation.

Tass, a state-owned Russian news agency, reported on May 4 that the aerial display was to feature 77 planes to represent the number of years since Moscow's victory over Germany. Per Tass, the display included the Il-80, the "doomsday" plane that the Russians claim is nuke-proof, and other bomber jets.

Tass also detailed plans for eight MiG fighter jets to fly over the Red Square."

Russian TV Schedules Hacked With “No To War” Message Ahead Of Vladimir Putin Speech – Reports

As Russian president Vladimir Putin was preparing to address the nation Monday morning during the annual Victory Day parade commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, local television menus were reportedly hacked with program descriptions on smart TVs replaced by a message reading, “The blood of thousands of Ukrainians and hundreds of murdered children is on your hands. TV and the authorities are lying. No to war.”

Per the BBC, major channels including Channel One, Rossiya-1 and NTV-Plus were affected. The Washington Post said the same line appeared on the platforms of IT giant Yandex while RuTube, Russia’s answer to YouTube, was also affected.

Reuters reported it was not immediately clear how the messages appeared today. In March, hacking collective Anonymous claimed responsibility for hacking into several outlets to broadcast footage of the war from Ukraine. As the war has raged on, Russians’ access to independent and social media in the country has been strictly controlled by the Kremlin.

Despite speculation that Putin might make a major announcement during his address, none was forthcoming. He referred to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a “special military operation,” and said it was “the inevitable, timely and only correct decision,” according to the New York Times.

Ahead of Putin’s speech, Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky released a video commemorating Victory Day, saying “We won then. We will win now too.” He referred to Putin as a madman and said, “We are fighting for our children’s freedom and therefore we will win… Very soon there will be two victory days in Ukraine.”

"As heavy fighting continues to rage in eastern Ukraine, Finland has said it intends to apply to join NATO "without delay," in a major policy shift that sees the Nordic country, which shares a long border with Russia, abandoning decades of neutrality.

"NATO membership would strengthen Finland's security. As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defense alliance. Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay," Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said in a joint statement on May 12.

"We hope that the national steps still needed to make this decision will be taken rapidly within the next few days."

Ukraine's military, meanwhile, reported pushing back Russian forces in a counterattack in the east that could mark the beginning of a shift in the momentum of the war.

Ukraine's armed forces' General Staff said it had recaptured Pytomnyk, a village on the main highway north of Kharkiv, a city located just 40 kilometers from the border.

In its daily intelligence bulletin, Britain's Ministry of Defense noted that the withdrawal of Russian forces from the Kharkiv area "is a tacit recognition of Russia's inability to capture key Ukrainian cities where they expected limited resistance from the population."

In Helsinki, Niisto and Marin said in their statement that a special committee will announce a formal Finnish decision on a membership bid on May 15.

Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometer border and a turbulent relationship with Russia, has stepped up its cooperation with NATO since Russia seized Crimea in 2014.

Finland fought two wars with the Soviet Union between 1939 and 1944, repelling an attempted invasion but losing 10 percent of its territory in the subsequent peace agreement.

Finland maintained its neutrality in the postwar period, acting at times as an intermediary between Moscow and the West.

Another Nordic country, traditionally neutral Sweden, is also expected to announce its intention to join NATO in the coming days, in a major reshaping of the European security architecture prompted by Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine."

I wonder if the war is entering something of a stalemate

At the start you had a huge push by Putin and Russian Dictator 'allies' of sorts in Belorussian territory. Putin's troops attacking from the South and East, Belarus attacking from the North, it looked like the whole of Ukraine was going to be split in two. Then Ukraine starts getting those bullets and drones and Anti-Tank missiles, they proved themselves good fights and there is a counter attack but now the battle line only goes so far.

Kherson late October, November 2022 is a change to that overall trend, Russian forces ordered to withdraw from the city or what remains of a city and Ukrainian forces subsequently started entering the city November 2022. A city of artists, boxers, gymnast, engineers, musicians, Universities, Church of St. Catherine, Ports mostly destroyed?

Russia has a far more dangerous military on paper, Airforce, Satellites, Navy but it seems Russians are badly trained and have failed to adapt to a new world of new tech in war, the experts keep overestimating Russian strength?
Ukraine as a force seems to be in independent groups, far more agile and compared to the block headed Russian dictator style leadership, no thinking from the autocratic and rigid Russian state. The Russians seem to have problems morale, difficult fighting in foreign land, out classed by new Anti-Tank missiles and Drones and motivation, bad Russian decision-making. Some reports now say Moscow is trying to get weapons from Iran and North Korea.

Sellers of natural gas would be pleased to charge each customer, based on the customer's wealth/income, a different price per cubic foot of natural gas but that would outrage the customers who had the most money paying far more than the poorest customers. So . . . what do gas sellers do? Raise prices for everybody! Unless the poorest customers are freezing, the gas sellers have not set the price high enough to collect the maximum profits. Natural gas sellers would love for nations to subsidize the poorest customers who are freezing. Doing things that way means the sellers can raise their prices even higher, making even more profit.

What happens to old Russian leaders? The documentary "Gorbachev. Heaven" shows it.

It's common for a documentary to be labeled as an intimate portrait; but rarely is it true. But 'Gorbachev. Heaven' is unquestionably intimate, following the last leader of the Soviet Union shortly before his recent death. The film's subject was ninety years old, far from senile but undoubtedly frail, and his physical weakness is in no way hidden. Indeed, there's a tragic feeling to the story. Gorbachev was living in grace-and-favor accommodation when filming started (he later moved to a hospital, although he remained well enough to venture out on occasion), a grand house that nonetheless appears not to have been decorated in 30 years. The setting seems to emphasize his position in modern Russian society as a forgotten man. He's an interesting interviewee, in part because he is not accommodating to his interviewer or audience. Instead, he is thoughtful but defensive, and shows a surprising rigidity of thought: the man who dared to try to change the U. S. S. R. still seems grounded in the intellectual framings of his youth, proud of the fact he didn't commit mass murder to prop up the state, but still regretful of the fact that the state failed; and unwilling to speak directly of Putin, his eventual successor. For all his significance, it's easy to see why he fell into irrelevance long even when he remained physically vigorous. Nonetheless, the world owes him its thanks; dealt a losing hand, he played it the best way he could have done.

On the night between 23 and 24 July, 2023, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the nationwide missile attacks, the port of Reni was struck by multiple suicide drones and missiles. The port of Reni is situated around 200 meters from the Romanian bank of the Danube, Romania being a NATO and European Union member state. Multiple Romanian sailors in the ports on the other side of the Danube caught the events on camera. Some Romanian ships docked into the Reni port were damaged. The Romanian government wasn't put on high alert but numerous ships were granted to cross the border for their own safety. Similar attacks targeted the nearby ports of Izmail and Kiliia.

Ukrainian soldiers surveying the cost of war outside Bakhmut. Soldiers riding atop an IFV drive past smashed armored vehicles on the roadside. At least one appears to be a British Mastiff with slat armor, or something similar. Most of the vehicles seem to be some form of MRAP, relatively light vehicles for this type of combat, and have been sacrificed on the push into Bakhmut. One wonders if the armor on these vehicles was stout enough to protect the crew within. Thus far, western vehicles have demonstrated a higher degree of survivability than their Russian counterparts.
