Ukraine Is Starting To Win This War by Sean Kernan

A specific breakdown of how the new systems will win.

The war is slipping out of Putin’s hands, and it’s never been more apparent.

Here’s the problem: Russia relies on siege-style warfare from the Soviet Era.

It has a simple formula. Stand outside enemy range. Bomb them to smithereens. Then send in infantry to clean up.

But now, that plan is backfiring. I’ll explain.

Javelins and drones still matter in a big way, but we are now in an artillery battle in Eastern Ukraine.

The US has sent anti-artillery radars that trace incoming artillery shells.

Every time Russia fires, they reverse engineer the trajectory of an incoming round and point to a map and say, “Aim here.”

Ukrainians are pairing fantastic intelligence with US howitzer cannons that have a range of 18 miles. Germany also sent 7 PZH 2000s cannons, which are the most powerful tube artillery in the world, with a range of 25 miles.

When going tit-for-tat, they can strike from well outside the range of Russian artillery.

Even further, Russia is in unfriendly territory. Every time they attempt to move, they are subject to ambushes. Citizens in nearby homes are calling intelligence in to Ukraine’s Armed forces.

Additionally, Russia’s equipment repositions much slower than Ukraine's. Russian forces move like a bloated and dis-coordinated barge.

Even worse, Russia cannot supplement its forces properly with air support.

Ukraine has an obscene amount of anti-aircraft weaponry at its disposal. Every day, more weapons flow across its border.

Ukraine Strikes Back

Howitzers can be quickly reloaded and adjusted.

It fires a single round that is accurate within 30 feet from 12 miles away, and its explosion has a kill radius of 50 meters (kill radius means 50% of people in that radius will be killed).

It can also be quickly repositioned before the enemy can reset and refire.

The US has sent 90 Howitzers alongside 72 transport units to reposition them quickly. Several Ukrainian squads have already flown to the US and been trained on this equipment and are now training other peers while using the cannons.

When artillery arrives in Ukraine, it is ready out of the box.

Russia’s problem(s): the tale of two logistics

What’s incredible is how fast the US delivers weapons systems, heavy artillery, and supplies into Ukraine. It is making Russia’s logistics look like amateur hour.

Russia’s mobile artillery is extremely fuel consuming, and they go through a huge volume of rounds that need to be carted in.

For context, the US also sent 180,000 rounds of artillery (a single round weighs 95 lbs — you can’t just throw 500 rounds in a bag).

Ukraine’s artillery is now hitting Russia’s supply routes with ruthless accuracy from miles outside of their range. This is part of what is stalling Russia’s efforts.

Allied intelligence and satellite imagery are painting a vivid picture of enemy movements in Ukraine and Russia. In many cases, Russian forces don’t know what hit them.

Ukraine is also striking fuel supplies just over the Russian border (though they refrain from directly admitting this).

There has also been a string of mysterious fires in Russia, either because of sabotaging or infiltrating soldiers.

Russians are getting mauled in the east

Ukraine is reclaiming territory, pushing 40 kM deeper into the Kharkiv region in the past week.

Any minor gains Russia claims are simply because Ukraine redirects forces with greater precision, applying pressure in thoughtful and strategic ways.

Russia’s attempts to push towards Odessa have stalled at Mykolaiv. Their desire to create a land bridge from Crimea to Moldova is doomed. Why?

You need good forward artillery spotters (including drones and other intelligence) to advance on defensive positions to then place shots properly and move forward.

This matters because most artillery battles use “shoot and scoot” tactics.

When you fire at the enemy, you can assume the enemy will roughly know where you are and return fire. Agility matters. Ukraine has it. Russia does not.

In an artillery battle, whoever can find and target enemy artillery the fastest, with the most accuracy, tends to be the one who wins.

Additionally, artillery is particularly vulnerable to ambush attacks with NLAWs and Javelins. Like tanks, artillery isn’t designed to fight alone, and Russia has done a piss poor job of protecting their equipment.

The final problem

Infantry combat is intimate and deadly. If your soldiers aren’t motivated and morale is down, you’ll have to use cow prodders to move them forward.

Russian losses are catastrophic. Seven (possibly 10) generals have been killed because they were in forward positions trying to motivate soldiers.

We’ve heard multiple hacked phone calls of soldiers complaining about morale and footage of Russian citizens firebombing recruiting stations to avoid conscription.

Russia’s advantages have turned into its weaknesses. They now face a better version of themselves in the east of Ukraine. Kamikaze drones are diving out of the sky at will. Ukrainian artillery is outperforming their own.

If your men don’t want to fight in infantry combat, and you can’t win in ranged combat, what are you left with? Threatening nuclear strikes.

You don’t threaten nuclear strikes when you are winning a war.

Every day that goes by results in Ukraine getting more equipment, training, intelligence, and funding to fight off Russia. It’s only a matter of time.

Signym and 6ix probably never even grasped that Adam Baldwin was cast as Jayne because Jayne is the direct opposite of all the other crew. Adam Baldwin's politics (direct opposite of every other actor on the show) got Baldwin hired for the job of playing Jayne because Jayne has to bring the dissonance to the crew.

Big guns and small drones: The devastating combo Ukraine is using to fight off Russia

Heavy artillery uses an “adjusted fire” approach, meaning small changes to trajectory are made between each salvo until a target is hit. For decades, that meant armies sending personnel to the front lines and radioing instructions to the gunners several miles back. But experts say Ukrainian forces are going one better by harnessing widely available drone technology to provide real-time surveillance data on Russian targets and fire their heavy weapons with unprecedented accuracy.

Most of the drones are commercially available multirotor aircraft typically used in the media, agriculture and engineering sectors. They can operate for up to 30 minutes and as far as 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) into enemy territory.

Soldiers control the drones, relaying location and topographic data to artillery batteries via military channels on Telegram. “They are providing real-time information: ‘OK, guys, 100 meters to the left, 50 meters to the right,’ that kind of thing,” Iakovenko said.

That’s what makes new technology revolutionary, not just having it in the field but how you use it.

The surveillance and reconnaissance benefits provided by drones would mean little without the heavy artillery to back them up, and this was a problem for Ukraine in the conflict’s opening days.

The heavy artillery arriving from NATO allies allows Ukraine to regularly replenish its ammunition stocks, also from NATO. That’s hugely important, particularly if you think the war is going to last a long time. A million shells weighs about 100 million pounds, or 50,000 tons and Ukraine can't make that many per year when Russia is destroying the Ukrainian factories making shells. I guess Russia's next move is to fire missiles at NATO's factories to stop the flow of shells to Ukraine. Then NATO fires missiles at Russian factories making shells for the war in Ukraine.

Putin got himself into a legal tangle. Because Putin won't declare war on Ukraine, Putin's soldiers can refuse to fight in Ukraine:

Dmitri told his commanders that he refused to rejoin the invasion. “They were furious. But they eventually calmed down because there wasn’t much they could do,” he said.

He was soon transferred to Belgorod, a Russian city close to the border with Ukraine, where he has been stationed since. “I have served for five years in the army. My contract ends in June. I will serve my remaining time and then I am out of here,” he said. “I have nothing to be ashamed of. We aren’t officially in a state of war, so they could not force me to go.”

Dmitri’s refusal to fight highlights some of the military difficulties the Russian army has faced as a result of the Kremlin’s political decision not to formally declare war on Ukraine – preferring instead to describe the invasion, which will soon reach its fourth month, as a “special military operation”.

Under Russian military rules, troops who refuse to fight in Ukraine can face dismissal but cannot be prosecuted, said Mikhail Benyash, a lawyer who has been advising soldiers who choose that option.

Benyash said “hundreds and hundreds” of soldiers had been in touch with his team for advice on how they could avoid being sent to fight. Among them were 12 national guardsmen from Russia’s southern city of Krasnodar who were fired after refusing to go to Ukraine.

“Commanders try to threaten their soldiers with prison time if they dissent, but we tell the soldiers that they can simply say no,” Benyash said, adding that he was not aware of any criminal cases against soldiers who refused to fight. “There are no legal grounds to start a criminal case if a soldier refuses to fight while on Russian territory.”

Many soldiers, therefore, have chosen to be fired or transferred rather than going into “the meat grinder”, he said.

A similar account to Dmitri’s was given to the BBC’s Russian service by Sergey Bokov, a 23-year-old soldier who at the end of April decided to leave the army after fighting in Ukraine. “Our commanders didn’t even argue with us because we were not the first ones to leave,” Bokov said.

Pointing to Russia’s military laws, Benyash said it would be more difficult for soldiers to refuse to fight if Russia were to declare a full-scale war. “During wartime, rules are totally different. Refusal then would mean much harsher penalties. They would be looking at time in prison.”

Jayne has a redemption arc? Have you been reading film criticism? Jayne is an asshole from start to finish. He tries to be "good" but is too selfish and dishonest to be trusted, too controlled by his animal lustiness, and too stupid to be left unsupervised.

In the movie, Jayne intended to sell River to the Alliance. The script where Wash lives, below, made that very clear about Jayne, but to stop him, River knocked Jayne unconscious in both versions of the movie. That is Jayne's redemption arc.

Jayne has a redemption arc? Have you been reading film criticism? Jayne is an asshole from start to finish. He tries to be "good" but is too selfish and dishonest to be trusted, too controlled by his animal lustiness, and too stupid to be left unsupervised.

In the movie, Jayne intended to sell River to the Alliance. The script where Wash lives, below, made that very clear about Jayne, but to stop him, River knocked Jayne unconscious in both versions of the movie. That is Jayne's redemption arc.

It was an incomplete redemption arc as the show was cut short LOOOOOOOOONG before it ever should have been.

The movie is bullshit and I outright refuse to accept it as Cannon. And now that you mention it, the ONLY thing Serenity got right was not forcing a fake 180 for Jayne since he hadn't yet completed that arc and they crammed and rushed every other goddamned Firefly topic you could imagine into 90 minutes.

In the real world, people don't magically become good guys overnight, and many of them never do.

But if you never start trying, you're never going to be a good person yourself.

It takes a lot of work. It often doesn't come easy.

I don't hold much hope that you'll ever become a good person, but everybody has the ability to turn things around.

Event has been confirmed by third-party sources. No doubt it is a bloody nose for Russian army. The Kiev army is fighting hard, and there are losses on both sides.

That is the nature of "war of attrition".

But IMHO it will not change the final outcome bc Kiev's army is reportedly losing hundreds of men per day, either killed, wounded, or surrendered.

I made a prediction (by end of year half of Ukraine will be in Russia's hands, the US economy will be in recession and EU will be worse; or most of the globe will be a great smoking ruin) and I see no reason to change it. No matter how much blather you post.

According to The Daily Beast, in the phone call released by Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate on Saturday, the man, Nikita, who is identified as a solider speaking to his mother, expresses doubt about Ukrainians surrendering.

"This won't end anytime soon. What the hell do I need this for? At 20 years old...I'm not at all interested in Ukraine. I need to come back and resign," he states. "I had a commander...who shot himself in the leg just to get out of here. And that was in the very beginning!"

The soldier's mother then says that someone has to "defend Russia," The Daily Beast reported, adding: "They will just kill us all, it'll be World War Four and Russia will lose!"

The soldier goes on to say that people in his brigade are "are just disappearing on their own. Some of them vanished without a trace, some were taken prisoner, some are hiding, some are already in Russia."

Do you REALLY think that a Ukrainian intelligence official is going to say "We're getting our ass handed to us. Losing 500-1000 soldiers every day. All of our major diesel refineries have been destroyed, our train substations have been destroyed, most of our ammo dumps have been destroyed, we have no way of moving troops and ammunition to the front, let alone heavy equipment like artillery and tanks. At this rate our army will collapse in a month." ?

Seriously, dood, get your head screwed on straight. The propaganda makes no sense at all at this point: Russians are really inept but at the same time incredibly dangerous??

It's flying thick and fast on both sides. (Russia says the sanctions only make it stronger, but OTOH they'll only negotiate if some are removed. Huh.)

One of the things that a Russian ex-pat military officer was saying is that this is all game-planned with lots of contingency plans, and involves a lot of math with lots of derivatives in the equations: How fast can we produce and move supplies, how fast cn we degrade the enemies' supply lines, how fast can we move v how fast can they move, etc. It's not just bigwigs pushing little toy soldiers around on a big map with a long stick. I see this as a race to the ...er ... finish. IMHO Russians usually play a long game, but I suspect they have a deadline in mind: to finish off Ukraine b4 the USA gets its feet underneath it and starts to get involved in a real way. I can see us turning this into another Vietnam.
