Everyone knows that Nicholas II was executed along with his entire family in 1918, almost a year after the Bolsheviks seized power. But long before his reign, regicide was not uncommon.

I hope Russians remember their glorious history by "sending" Putin to his dacha.

Do you REALLY think that a Ukrainian intelligence official is going to say "We're getting our ass handed to us. Losing 500-1000 soldiers every day. All of our major diesel refineries have been destroyed, our train substations have been destroyed, most of our ammo dumps have been destroyed, we have no way of moving troops and ammunition to the front, let alone heavy equipment like artillery and tanks. At this rate our army will collapse in a month." ?

Seriously, dood, get your head screwed on straight. The propaganda makes no sense at all at this point: Russians are really inept but at the same time incredibly dangerous??

It's flying thick and fast on both sides. (Russia says the sanctions only make it stronger, but OTOH they'll only negotiate if some are removed. Huh.)

One of the things that a Russian ex-pat military officer was saying is that this is all game-planned with lots of contingency plans, and involves a lot of math with lots of derivatives in the equations: How fast can we produce and move supplies, how fast cn we degrade the enemies' supply lines, how fast can we move v how fast can they move, etc. It's not just bigwigs pushing little toy soldiers around on a big map with a long stick. I see this as a race to the ...er ... finish. IMHO Russians usually play a long game, but I suspect they have a deadline in mind: to finish off Ukraine b4 the USA gets its feet underneath it and starts to get involved in a real way. I can see us turning this into another Vietnam.

You need to watch this comrade. If you can take bad news.

*snort* You owe me a keyboard!

SIGNYM's BS decoded:

First note: No link to the Russian ex-pat's comments per usual. Sig is getting like JSF, " I heard somewhere something about something...?"

- ex-Pat is saying "We meant to do that... not win quickly. We want to lose slowly, it's more painful and at a greater expensive to man power and hardware. It's what makes us Russian."

Quote: "It's not just bigwigs pushing little toy soldiers around on a big map with a long stick. I see this as a race to the ...er ... finish."
- Gee, thanks Sherlock. You're a military genius. More like a race to the Russian border.

- In other words, they're grossly incompetent. If they can't drop bombs on innocent civilians and hoodwink their own people into being conscripts for their "operation" they got nothing.

Quote: " but I suspect they have a deadline in mind..."
- To finish off Kyiv and Ukraine in one week. Whoops!

- 50 billion USD and too many Javelin kills too late. Say hello to our little friends.

- SIG's lame attempt to scare us with a "Vietnam" reference. So weak.

You must have confused Ukraine with a democracy.

There is NO WAY that Kiev's intelligence staff, who brought us the fake Snake Island resistance and the Ghost of Kiev and Russian "war crimes", is going to suddenly start telling truth.

And if you think collapsing governments won't push a Big Lie, all you have to do is look at the Hilter government just before Berlin was taken. Up to that point, Germans were told, and many believed, that there was a secret weapon or a brilliant strategy that would save them, and that Hitler would win.
If you want a more recent example, Baghdad Bob.

Everything coming out of Kiev should be viewed as psyops, until proven otherwise.

The parts of Ukraine that speak Russian will either request autonomy from Kiev or request to be made part of Russia. I can't imagibe Russia planning to occupy the western parts for very long. Demilitarize (crush the Ukie army) and de-Nazify. I didn't see anything in there about occupying a hostile territory, and given Russia's history with eastern bloc countries I don't think they have any plans to repeat the situation.

You keep bringing up boogeymen from the past (tsars! Stalin! Hitler!) as if the current Russian leadership has learned nothing from the past. In reality, the person who has learned nothing is you.

In this two minute longer version, the TV hostess is trying to shutdown the general. She states as fact that Russia's survival was at risk if Ukraine was NOT invaded:

The Russian hostess' opinion -- "Our very existence is on the line. Surrender is not possible. Finding a common language with those who want us to disappear is impossible. We'll have to go to the very end. We'll get there, our great country will win."

Here's some reality:

- Putin misjudged how his invasion would only unite "Ukies" and motivate them to fight back and bloody the Russian army.
- Putin couldn't take Kyiv in 7 days despite his (anemic, train wreck) of a bull rush to do so. If it was a feint it was the most costly, dumbest feint in military history. In fact, ANY attempt to explain it as a "plan" makes it look even worse. "He meant to do that??"
- Putin keeps losing generals.
- Putin has united the West and the EU and NATO.
- Putin completely misjudged Finland and Sweden. Both are applying to join NATO, Putin's nightmare.
- Putin's own "G7" he has only one ally, Belarus, who have yet to join the fight. No ally really.
- Putin completely misjudged how many companies would leave Russia. ANY attempt to say that it was a plan makes it look even worse.
- Putin has motivated many of the most educated Russians to leave the country
- Putin has caused long term damage to Russia's economy
- Putin has caused long term damage to Russia's world standing.
- Putin miscalculated how many young Russian soldiers would die.
- Putin has motivated some of Russia's largest oil and gas customers to find alternative suppliers, and - maybe most significantly - to accelerate their alternative energy programs (thanks Putin!).
- Putin is even losing the spin war. Except of course with his state tv brain washed and threatened citizens who face jail time for speaking the Truth.

I'm sure there are more, but keep pretending it was all some big plan even though the above list is so utterly damning. Putin fcked up big time, "... and no amount of (your) wishful thinking and flag-waving is going to change ground truth."

Russia Sites Hacked Across Country To Display Their War Dead

A host of Russian media sites, including news agency TASS, Kommersant and Izvestia were targeted by hackers to display messages calling for an end to Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

"Dear citizens. We urge you to stop this madness, do not send your sons and husbands to certain death," the message read on several websites. "Putin is forcing us to lie and is putting us in danger."

Independent Russian news outlet Novaya Gazeta reported that some sites were hacked with messages that said: "Stop the madness and do not send sons and husbands to certain death."

Some sites were replaced with a black "tombstone" stating that 5,300 Russian troops had been killed in four days—since Putin declared a "special military operation" against Ukraine on February 24.

"More deaths than in the First Chechen War 1994-1996," the message read.

"This message will be removed, and some of us will be fired or even imprisoned. But we can no longer tolerate it," one message reportedly said, Novaya Gazeta reported, noting that at the end of the message, the logo of the hacker group Anonymous was published.

"We have been isolated from the whole world, they have stopped buying oil and gas. In a few years we will be living like North Korea," another message said. "What is this for? So that Putin can get into the history books? It's not our war, let's stop him!"

Several Russian media sites reported that Anonymous, the hacking group that first made headlines about a decade ago, was behind the cyber attacks.

"The Anonymous collective is officially in cyber war against the Russian government. #Anonymous #Ukraine," the group tweeted on February 25.

Zelenskyy's show once made a joke about President Vladimir Putin that got it canceled in Russia.

Zelenskyy sparred with Putin long before the current military invasion, according to the Hulu documentary "Two Men at War" by ABC News' George Stephanopoulos.

"Do you know, by the way, who else wears this watch?" a Hublot watch salesman asks Zelenskyy's character in a clip from "Servant of the People." "Putin," he adds.

"Who?" Zelenskyy asks. "Putin Hublot?"

"Yes," the salesman responds.

The pronunciation sounds like "Putin khuilo," a crude football and protest chant used by Ukrainians against Putin, according to the London Evening Standard. ABC News senior national correspondent Terry Morgan said the "off-color joke" caused the show to get canceled in Russia.

"In one episode, Zelenskyy makes a joke about Putin, kind of an off-color joke," he said. "And afterwards, that show was canceled in Russia. But it added a dimension of political satire, of addressing the problems in Ukraine through comedy. People loved it."

Signym, you are spreading a falsehood.

When he was sworn in as president in May 2019, Zelenskiy also inherited the role of supreme commander in chief of Ukraine's armed forces and a grinding war against Russia-backed separatists who hold parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in what is known as the Donbas. More than 13,000 people have been killed since fighting began in April 2014.

One of Zelensky's two main promises was to bring the war to an end, a goal that polls have shown Ukrainians want to see accomplished more than anything.

"He showed a real willingness to end the war. That's a good thing,” Yermolenko says. "The world saw it, too -- that the real desire for peace was on the part of Ukraine, not Russia."

Throughout Zelenskiy's tenure, Kyiv and Western officials say, Russia has continued to funnel money, military equipment, and fighters to eastern Ukraine.

"But Zelensky also showed naiveté, thinking -- or pretending that he thinks -- that ending the war with Russia is an easy thing" and that goodwill would be enough, Yermolenko continues. "He now sees that it's not the case."

Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin met face-to-face for the first time in December, in Paris. The two leaders discussed ways to potentially bring the war to an end, but their positions remain far apart.

He did not achieve peace on Russian terms, which would be unacceptable for most Ukrainians.

Yeah. It's pretty gross.

The only threads that had even been touched since early morning yesterday until late night when I posted again were the 4 Russia threads and the Garden. And this was the last one that was posted to, somewhere in mid-afternoon.

My guess is that if you and I stopped posting in them altogether they wouldn't have anything to say about any topic right now.

Let's do an experiment and give these Russia threads the attention they deserve, shall we?

On the question of Russian humiliation

Three months ago, there was concern that Russia would overrun Ukraine in less than a week. Plenty of folks tried to find a means to avoid that. John Mearsheimer talked about respecting Russia’s sphere of influence. Other realists talked about the need for a “golden bridge” for Vladimir Putin to avoid further bloodshed. This mirrored the prewar European discourse about the crisis, in which the goal was to mollify Putin to avoid further escalation and forcible territorial annexation.

In the present, these same groups of folks are still very worried. Now, however, the concern is not that Russia will win, but that it might lose and lose badly. Mearsheimer told the Chinese TV network CGTN that “Russia cannot afford to lose.” He told PBS that “one circumstance in which a great power is likely to use nuclear weapons is … when it thinks a decisive defeat is being inflicted on it. What Biden is bent on doing is inflicting a decisive defeat on Russia.” In other words, losing could cause Russia to lash out even more aggressively.

Politico’s Matthew Karnitschnig reported about similar sentiments in Europe this week: “Western European leaders are now worried about what might happen if Ukraine actually wins. … A Ukrainian win could destabilize Russia, making it even more unpredictable and putting a normalization of energy links further out of reach. That’s why some western European capitals quietly favor a ‘face-saving’ resolution to the conflict, even if it costs Ukraine some territory.”

This argument to be risible for several reasons. First, it is worth remembering that Ukrainian officials kept making pretty creative offers on issues like Crimea and the Donbas region, only to be rebuffed by Putin. A golden bridge has been proffered to Russia multiple times; it has been Putin who has repeatedly refused to take that exit ramp.

Russia’s worst-case scenario is that Russia retreats back to the 2014 status quo. Its sovereign territory will not be threatened.

Ukraine has conducted periodic air raids on Russian soil during this conflict, so one could consider the possibility that Ukraine expands the war into Russia proper. This seems highly unlikely, however. It is far from clear whether Ukraine has the capacity or interest in mounting such an offensive onto Russian soil. U.S. officials have also drawn a bright red line restricting intelligence sharing with Ukraine for attacks on Russian soil.

Russia might lose the war in Ukraine, but Russia itself will persist. So why the concern about a golden bridge? My hunch is, analysts are conflating Russia with Putin, and that is where the conversation starts to get interesting.

Russia’s war effort has suffered reverse after reverse, leading Putin to micromanage the fight. At the same time, the grumbling from Russia’s populace is on the rise.

A weakened Putin who has to focus on domestic discontent to stay in power is hardly the worst outcome for the United States. International escalation as a diversionary tactic is highly unlikely; as Lawrence Freedman notes, “nuclear use would not solve any strategic problems for Russia, and would create many, many more.” It is even possible that Putin’s time in office would come to an end.

None of this is to say that the United States or NATO should now pursue maximalist war aims. Patrick Porter, Justin Logan and Benjamin Friedman are correct to point out that NATO’s war aims do not perfectly sync up with Ukraine; Western leaders should signal their limits now rather than later.

The idea that a victorious Ukraine spells the end for Russia, however, is far-fetched. Everyone should stop worrying about a golden bridge.

Too much evidence and reality for Putin lovin' Signym. Why no response, hon? Just can't? Too hard? Too True?

Here's some reality:

- Putin misjudged how his invasion would only unite "Ukies" and motivate them to fight back and enbarras the Russian army*.
- Russian military used insecure communications - "Hello, Dimitri? I am sitting here with the Z 48 battalion waiting for you... I am at the following coordinates..." boom.
- Russian army failed to use proper logistics. 40 mile traffic jam/ cluster-fck.
- Russia loses their Prized ship to a country without a nvy.
- Putin has motivated many of the most educated Russians to leave the country - brain drain just like Stalin.
- Putin has caused long term damage to Russia's economy
- Putin has caused long term damage to Russia's world standing.
- Putin miscalculated how many young Russian soldiers would die.
- Russia failed to take out Ukraine air defense sysrtem.
- Putin has motivated some of Russia's largest oil and gas customers to find alternative suppliers, and - maybe most significantly - to accelerate their alternative energy programs (thanks Putin!).
- Putin is even losing the spin war. Except of course with his own state run tv brain washed and threatened citizens who face jail time for speaking the Truth.
- Putin misjudges just how much Russia is hated around the globe.
- Russian army failed to prepare their troops for what their real "operation" was.

Come on, Zignym, if this reality/evidence of Putin's major fck up is wrong as you suggest, then it should be easy for you to show how they're wrong... right?

Alar Karis, President of Estonia, writes: What words are there when a country launches an all-out attack on its neighbour? “Evil is real,” I posted on Twitter on the morning of 24 February. We must recognise the evil of Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine and be more courageous in our response.

The peace that had reigned in Europe since the end of the Balkan wars seemed to many to be permanent. The prevailing mindset was that conflict between nations which in the 20th century would have culminated in war could now be resolved diplomatically. Russia’s attack on Georgia in 2008, its annexation of Crimea in 2014, and its overt support for separatists in Donbas were not enough to shake this faith in peace.

Russia’s aggressive foreign policy certainly rattled those countries that feel Moscow’s chill breath on their necks. But in many capitals, the frayed nerves on the eastern edge of NATO and the EU were looked upon with a certain disdain. We were, they asserted, merely suffering from post-traumatic stress due to our history. More tactful, but no less dismissive, were the reassurances that central and eastern Europe had nothing to fear: there was no chance of Russia starting a war in Europe.

Those who said these things have been forced to admit that they were wrong and that we were right all along.

Some countries favoured positive engagement with Russia. They hoped that tying up a dangerous, neurotic partner with economic deals would result in mutual dependence and the partner losing all interest in going to war. This too was a mistake – as many of those who pursued it have now admitted.

There is no schadenfreude to be derived from this, at least for me. I feel only heavy-hearted. Nonplussed that even in Estonia in late 2021, the prevailing thought was that as much of a danger as Russia presented, it was very unlikely to launch a large-scale military attack in Europe. We did not want to believe that this irrational solution was possible.

My legal adviser, Hent Kalmo, one of Estonia’s foremost philosophers of law, wrote in the cultural weekly Sirp that, “In hindsight, the attack against Ukraine reads like the story of a murder admitted to in advance. Up until the very last moment, no one wanted to see it as anything other than a diplomatic manoeuvre, or to believe that the wheels of the Russian war machine were about to start rolling.”

Averting further catastrophe

One idea that I have written about bears repeating. The time has come for us to get over our fear of thinking outside the box. Russia is blockading Ukrainian ports, including grain vessels. World Bank president David Malpass has warned that the war will exacerbate the food crisis in many poorer countries, with record rises in food prices – as much as 37% – leaving hundreds of millions of people below the bread line. “This is a human catastrophe,” he said, “which will soon become a political challenge for governments.”

As Western allies, we must not be afraid to debate whether and how, in the spirit and letter of the UN Charter and if invited to do so by the Ukrainian government, we could act to keep the port of Odesa open to Ukrainian grain vessels. The Ukrainians say that their silos already hold 20 million tonnes of grain, likely to rise to 50 million tonnes after this year’s harvest. This is too large an amount to be delivered to the global market by railway. Selling it would both earn Ukraine the money it needs to keep running, and help to alleviate the food shortage casting a shadow over poorer countries. The West should assert itself on the Black Sea and guarantee the safe passage of commercial vessels. This would be a true humanitarian mission, particularly for countries in Africa.

Trump impeachment: The short, medium and long story
5 February 2020
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49800181

The defense argues that the Senate should leave the impeachment decision to the voters. While that logic is appealing to our democratic instincts, it is inconsistent with the Constitution’s requirement that the Senate, not the voters, try the president. Hamilton explained that the Founders’ decision to invest senators with this obligation rather than leave it to voters was intended to minimize — to the extent possible — the partisan sentiments of the public.

This verdict is ours to render. The people will judge us for how well and faithfully we fulfilled our duty. The grave question the Constitution tasks senators to answer is whether the President committed an act so extreme and egregious that it rises to the level of a “high crime and misdemeanor.”

Yes, he did.

The President asked a foreign government to investigate his political rival.

The President withheld vital military funds from that government to press it to do so.

The President delayed funds for an American ally at war with Russian invaders.

The President’s purpose was personal and political.

Accordingly, the President is guilty of an appalling abuse of the public trust.

Putin signs law scrapping upper age limit to enlist in Russian military, says Russian state media

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law scrapping the upper age limit for Russians and foreigners to join the military as contract service members, according to Russian state news agency TASS.

Russia’s State Duma passed the bill on Wednesday but Putin's signature was needed for it to become law.

Previously, citizens aged 18 to 40 and foreigners aged 18 to 30 could enlist in the Russian military.

The changes were drafted by the head of the State Duma Defense Committee, Andrei Kartapolov, and his first deputy, Andrei Krasov. According to TASS, they believe the abolition of an upper age limit will attract specialists in areas such as medical support, engineering and communications.

The explanatory note to the draft law also notes that the use of high-precision weapons and military equipment requires specialists and they gain the experience by the age of 40 to 45.

The changes in law come amid serious Russian casualties in Ukraine, where Moscow is waging what it euphemistically calls a "special military operation."

Russia also has a system of military conscription. The Kremlin initially said draftees would not serve in Ukraine but subsequently acknowledged they were serving in combat.

At around 00:46 into the video, the aircraft clips the top of a tree. The pilots are staying as low to the ground as possible to avoid getting shot down by MANPADS and air defense artillery.

Really?

Russia and allies have xfered their attention from southern Donbas (Mariupol) to northern Donbas (Severadonetsk, Lisychansk etc) and are breaking through that front. I believe that they're hoping to encircle a large bulk of the UAF for destruction.

The land bridge from DPR/LPR to Crimea is complete, with all rail lines and roadways repaired, which makes resupply towards Odessa easier. And Kherson has been using the ruble since May 1; all debts in hrivna have been forgiven.
