Any way you slice it, this is less than 11% return on investment.

This from a large corporation, which is able to maintain a remarkable level of price consistency and stability. When was the last time you went to the pump and found the day's price was $10 per gallon? Even when the company was losing money?

Germany: Annual inflation hits highest rate since 1993

In 2020, Germany's average inflation was still relatively low at 0.5%. By December 2021, the year-on-year increase in prices stood at 5.3%.

It was the second time since reunification that German inflation had topped the 5% mark, after coming in at 5.2% in November.

The US consumer price index rose 7.5% in the 12 months ending January, not adjusted for seasonal swings, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday. It was the steepest annual price increase since February 1982 and worse than economists had forecast.

Stripping out food and energy prices, which tend to be more volatile, prices increased by 6% between January 2021 and January 2022, marking the largest increase since August 1982. Food prices rose 7% over the same period, while energy prices rose 27%, led by fuel oil and gasoline prices.

Merkel has been replaced by Olaf Scholz. Prices are set by rich industrialists, not by governments. I don't expect you understand that, but that's the way it is, unless government freezes prices, which happens during wars and works just as well as letting prices rise until the rich industrialists have taken all the money.

What is the upper limit on price increases? It may seem a tautology, but prices can't go higher once the rich have all the money, which is their goal in Capitalist countries. This is why the lower 50% of the population, economically speaking, have no money. The rich have successful achieved their goal and have moved on to new and loftier goals, harder to achieve -- taking all the money from the upper 50% of the population.

Biden*'s energy policy is directly to blame for the energy costs today.

Until you accept and admit that, we've got nothing further to discuss.

. . .

Man I'm awesome.

6ix, are you absolutely sure Biden's policy is to blame for energy prices? I only ask because I professionally know the mechanism for fuel price inflation is the same as for real estate price inflation. I hope you understand real estate, since you plan on making a suitcase full of money when you sell your house. Your house is a large fraction of the net worth you are bragging about. It is you setting the price on your house, not Biden. Maybe an illustration from the real estate rental market will get you thinking about how inflation really works:

I wish folks would stop telling young people how to manage their money. I paid $310 for my first apartment. Based on inflation, it should go for $850 per month now but the rent is $1600. You can't "personal finance" your way out of greedy landlords and depressed wages.
https://twitter.com/humanworkplace/status/1359205579894456326

The driving mechanism for real estate inflation is simple greed -- charge the highest price you can get, take all their money. And Washington DC has no control of the prices.

6ix, when you sell your house, get greedy. The only limit on your greed is how much money your buyer has. Too greedy and the house won't sell. As in real estate, the same is true for energy costs, except you buy energy a thousand times more frequently than houses, but the principle of greed and inflation are the same for houses and energy.

I assume it is obvious, but for the record the people who are greediest, and responsible for causing inflation, do not want you to understand that their greed drives inflation. They want you to believe prices increase for abstract reasons of policy that can be blamed on government/Federal Reserve Bank Interest Rate/Money Supply/Printing Money rather than blame them. This misleading of buyers is a well known path to wealth for sellers.

I've made the purchase price back and over $30,000 on my house just from not paying rent. And that's with a conservative figure of $800 per month rent I haven't paid in 11 years by having it. We both know I've made quite a bit more than that.

I'll get what it's worth when I sell it. Or else I won't sell it.

Wow... If I was a numerologist, this might have some meaning.

I've spent $952 so far this year. I'll be getting $206 back in rebates, making it $746.

We're 42 days into the year.

That's $17.76 per day I've spent on DIY and essentials, with a large stockpile of everything I use daily on hand.

Cool Number.

Hopefully Bidenflation gets figured out before I feel the need to buy anything. I'm certainly going to be fixing my own emissions again this spring instead of paying for a used car in today's market.

Profits are up! Wages are down!

“Profit per unit of real value added” is not a common metric, but it's an interesting one. Generally speaking, we all believe that corporations deserve to be profitable if they produce a lot of value-added. That's only fair. But that isn't quite what's happened. Back in the 1990s, corporations earned 4-8 cents per unit of value-added. Today, after the big pandemic profit spike, they earn 16 cents per unit. This means that even if they plod along and produce exactly as much value-added every year, their profit has more than doubled.

Can you imagine what would happen if Biden takes care of gas and food prices? Answer this question:

When was the last time the President of the United States controlled prices of gasoline and food? It was back in WWII. FDR had a choice between losing the war by letting wealthy Americans raise prices to whatever the market would bear or winning the war.

The Office of Price Administration (OPA) was established within the Office for Emergency Management of the United States government by Executive Order 8875 on August 28, 1941. Pearl Harbor was still 3 months in the future. The way things work nowadays, WWII would be several years old (and very close to lost) before a Republican controlled Congress would even contemplate allowing a President to control prices without Congress immediately impeaching the President. Biden cannot control prices with this Congress.

Yes, this is true. But it's not like you can't get around that with planning.

In the last week I got about $280 of tools and materials for around $60 with rebates.

And now I've got a 6 battery charger unit that comes with a free battery for 56% off of the full price. 7 of my 8 existing batteries were free gifts that I got when I bought other tools on sale, and now 8 out of 9 of them are. What a fool I was back then paying for one of them when I didn't realize that if you bide your time they just offer them up for free every once in a while. I've got too many batteries for the unit.

I'll probably give a few of them away. I'm surely going to give away some of the regular chargers that they were giving away for free when they gave away the free batteries. I've got 5 of those now that are just taking up space.

A hint, but this is owners screwing their renters because of greed, not because of need, since real estate ownership costs did not jump when Biden became President:

The cost of renting a place in Orlando rose nearly 30% just last year alone, according to a survey by the real estate firm Redfin. Cities in Florida, New York, and New Jersey are seeing particularly steep jumps in rent. As is Austin, Texas, with the biggest one year gain of 40%.

The survey, it should be noted, tracks new listings for apartments.

"That doesn't literally mean that every person in Austin is going to see their rent go up 40 percent," says Redfin's Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather. "But it means that if you are on the market right now looking for an apartment or home to rent, the prices will be 40 percent higher than they were the year before." (When your contract expires within 12 months, then you see a 40% price increase to stay in the same place. There is no simpler example of undiluted greed.)

In Capitalism, when you see an opportunity to gouge, you take the money. The result is inflation for eternity. It you got too greedy, then lower your prices slightly, but the price trend is always upward. All that free money that Trump gave away to get reelected? $7.8 Trillion. That was the signal to the greediest Americans to raise prices, since there is a bunch loose money to vacuum up.

The “King of Debt” promised to reduce the national debt — then his tax cuts made it surge. Add in the pandemic, and he oversaw the third-biggest deficit increase of any president, relative to the size of the economy. And unlike George W. Bush and Abraham Lincoln, who oversaw the larger relative increases in deficits, Trump did not launch two foreign conflicts or have to pay for a civil war.

Since 6ix hasn't bought but one house in an entire life, you are probably unaware of how much worse greedy American home sellers have gotten. By the way, the President has no control over how greedy an American can be. It is strictly a matter of self-control, or lack of.

I frankly don't care. I have zero financial worries for the rest of my life.

It's not as if homes weren't expensive before I bought this house. I happened to buy this one for 40% of what the previous owners had paid for it just 5 years prior. They were among the millions of Americans who should never have qualified for the loans that were being given out to people who could never have hoped to pay them off... something that continued well into Obama's term under ACORN.

I would agree with you if "leadership" means corporations. If you are confused enough to believe that America's "leadership" are politicians than I don't agree with you.

There has never been a CEO in America that is as weak as even the strongest President. CEOs can do anything, and they don't need anybody's permission.

On the other hand, Trump couldn't do even one damn thing without the cooperation of dozens of staff. There was plenty of talk about the Deep State thwarting Trump. It wasn't Deep State. It was ordinary people who talk to Trump everyday that ignored his orders. There has NEVER been a CEO that would tolerate for a week the kind of disobedient crap from subordinates that even a President has to live with 24/7 and year after year. Lesser politicians have to tolerate even more disobedience than a President because they don't have the simple power every CEO has to instantaneously fire employees and change rules on a whim. Politicians can't fire other politicians, which is why government doesn't function well. Politicians can't change the rules, either.

With the freedom that CEOs have, and that politicians never had, corporations can raise their prices until they have emptied their customers' bank accounts. 6ix has a pretty good counter-strategy: don't buy. The CEOs can't cheat 6ix out of his money.

If companies were REALLY 'forced to raise prices' because of inflation they would have been 'forced to lower prices’ after Trump gave them $1.9 TRILLION in tax cuts. But they didn't — they raised prices then, too!

Corporations are excellent at flat out lying about what they do.

Hey... Every once in a while due to Second's complete lack of convictions, and the hilarious display of circular logic and mental gymnastics required for him to win every argument when all of his conclusions are in conflict with one another, he says something that I agree with.

No arguments from me on that post.

Our politicians are owned.

That's what the whole "California single-payer health care plan dead on arrival" was all about.

I hate to break it to you... They're owned by the Legacy Media and Big Tech too, and they love censorship while constantly spreading their own misinformation.

I'm calling your explanation a bunch of bullshit. American politicians are gossipy high school students. They aren't ready, and never will be, to take on adult responsibility. The politicians aren't owned; they are weaklings ignored by the adults, the CEOs, because the politicians are frightened by the CEOs of America and frightened by voters and limited by all the high school rules of politics. CEOs are unburdened by silly rules.

The Crash of 2008 was caused by CEOs doing as they pleased, and much of their profitable activity was fraud. The politicians had the power to stop the CEOs, but were too frightened by those adults with self-confidence, energy, fearlessness, invincible stupidity, and freedom to do whatever stupid things they please.

If the CEOs want inflation, they will get as much as their customers can afford. Even ruthless CEOs can't raise their prices higher when the customers don't have the money to pay. That is the only real limitation on CEOs' ability to inflate prices -- how much money does the customer have that we can steal? It doesn't matter what politicians want as far as inflation, so long as politicians are fearful of ramming prices down the throat of a CEO or fearful of jailing him if he won't cooperate.

Since politicians were so cowardly and stupid as to once again allow the following cheating that was made illegal back in the 1930s, the politicians certainly won't be brave enough to stop "small" price increases. "Small" only because buyers have a limited amount of money to steal. "Large" increases can't be made because there isn't money to pay those increases.

The financial crisis was primarily caused by deregulation in the financial industry. That permitted banks to engage in hedge fund trading with derivatives. Banks then demanded more mortgages to support the profitable sale of these derivatives. They created interest-only loans that became affordable to subprime borrowers.

Fueling greater risk-taking among banks, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in October 2004 relaxed the net capital requirements for five investment banks—Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS), Merrill Lynch (NYSE: MER), Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS). That freed them to leverage their initial investments by up to 30 times or even 40 times.

The preconditions for the price hikes we’re seeing today long predate the pandemic. Companies are able to take advantage of a crisis like the pandemic precisely because these foundations were set in place long before the crisis itself. And in corporate earnings call after corporate earnings call, executives are using inflation as a cover for egregious price hikes to boost their own profits.

A White House Economic Council analysis found gross profits of the top four meat processors soared 120 percent over the course of the pandemic.

“Capitalism without competition isn’t capitalism. It’s exploitation,” Biden said during the January unveiling of the plan. “That’s what we’re seeing in meat and poultry industries now.”

A little bit of Column A. A little bit of Column B.

Find me more than 10 politicians on either side who don't have more assets than they should ever conceivably have given their paychecks.

I won't be holding my breath for that one.

I've got more money than you could ever conceive from just my paychecks. (Social Security keeps a running total for me to calculate my monthly Social Security benefit that starts in April when I turn 70.) I didn't use political connections, insider trading, or tax cheating to accumulate wealth disproportionate to the sum of my paychecks. Trump thinks he has to cheat/sue/break promises to get rich, but I didn't have to. Trump's life story is why politicians are suspected of illegal wealth.

I could have ended up like my father, a Burger King manager. His wealth was definitely smaller than the sum of all his paychecks, but he depended on bank certificates of deposit to make his money grow. He was always telling me that I would end up broke because I don't make safe investments like he did. Dad's understanding of how Capitalism works was not a complete understanding. If he knew how it actually worked, in all the little details, he would not have agreed with how things are done in America. But then again, Dad was never one to think much about where his gasoline and natural gas came from. And he certainly wasn't investing in drilling for gas/crude. Stock market was too risky for Dad. Every market was too risky. Do only safe things, according my Dad.

Real life Capitalism, not the version my Father understood or his Father, the farmer, is done with endless pressure to raise prices, lower wages, lower drilling costs. There are risks, too. The result is what you see all around: high prices and low wages for the bottom 50% of Americans. And top 10% have gathered up most of the wealth because they understand Capitalism. https://www.statista.com/chart/19635/wealth-distribution-percentiles-i
n-the-us
/

If you understand how Capitalism actually works, and I have not yet known any poor people who both know and correctly/honestly use their knowledge, America is very nice place that doesn't require illegal business practices (see Trump for what illegal looks like).

America could be nicer, with much lower prices, but that requires not being ridiculously Capitalistic. In my Father's opinion, less Capitalism is Communism. That's why his wealth was small when he died. He couldn't overcome his many false beliefs about real Capitalism. And he never, never understood the real reasons for inflation.

Rents Reach ‘Insane’ Levels Across US With No End in Sight
(It is not insane. There is a well understood logic to price inflation.)

Krystal Guerra’s Miami apartment has a tiny kitchen, cracked tiles, warped cabinets, no dishwasher and hardly any storage space.

But Guerra was fine with the apartment’s shortcomings. It was all part of being a 32-year-old graduate student in South Florida, she reasoned, and she was happy to live there for a few more years as she finished her marketing degree.

That was until a new owner bought the property and told her he was raising the rent from $1,550 to $1,950, a 26% increase that Guerra said meant her rent would account for the majority of her take-home pay from the University of Miami.

“I thought that was insane,” said Guerra, who decided to move out. “Am I supposed to stop paying for everything else I have going on in my life just so I can pay rent? That’s unsustainable.”

vels-across-us-with-no-end-in-sight-2

This is how Capitalism works: Buy a property. Raise the Rent. Renters leave that can't pay. This eternal price increase continues as long as enough renters have money. Only when renters run out of money do prices stop increasing. Maybe prices fall a little, but usually property owners have a good understanding of how much money is out there so that rents don't overshoot than are forced to drop. Property owners try avoiding year-to-year rental income drop because it looks bad on their accounting books to the next owner, especially in the 3 years before reselling their rental property to that next owner. That potential new owner might decide not to buy because rental income isn't increasing at a steady pace.

Okay, smart guy, give your complex explanation for prices doubling in this story.

Texas 288 commuters could pay $22 per day in tolls. This is a Price Inflation Story.

Sharp increases in tolls along Texas 288 are taking increasing chunks out of commuters’ budgets, with trips now above $1 per mile during peak times.

“I am spending more in tolls than I am in gas each week,” said Pearland commuter Chris Boggiano, 50. “It’s just become too much.” (Not to worry because refineries will soon raise the price so that, once again, you pay more for gas than for tolls.)

Since November 2020, when charging for the toll lanes started, peak trips have roughly doubled in price. A northbound trip at 8 a.m. that initially cost $6.30 now costs $11.51, while a 5 p.m. southbound trip jumped from $5 to $10.59.

The Texas 288 lanes in Harris County are privatized and maintained by Blueridge Transportation Group. The firm, a cabal of investment and construction firms, was awarded a half-century deal in 2016 to build and maintain the lanes along Texas 288 in Harris County.

Blueridge officials did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. (The question should be asked: What is the justification for the price doubling? I already know the true answer: Capitalism. If you don't like that answer, too bad for you. Capitalism doesn't explain to suckers.)

6ix, can you devise an explanation better than Blueridge continues raising prices each year until the latest price increase causes a reduction in total revenue?

European inflation spikes up in February

Eurostat has issued a flash estimate of the euro area inflation rate for February: it will reach 5.8%, up from 5.1% in January. Here's how that compares to the US:

There are a couple of takeaways from this. First, US and European inflation rates follow each other, so don't be surprised if the February number for the US jumps as well. The BLS will release February CPI figures next week.

Second, we now have a year's worth of data showing that the US inflation rate has been a fairly steady two percentage points above the European rate during the pandemic recovery. This suggests that global issues are responsible for most of our high inflation rate, but that economic policy (i.e., the $1.9 trillion stimulus bill) is probably responsible for adding two percentage points to that.

That doesn't mean anything out of context.

In our own country, $4.25 per gallon can mean VERY different things depending on where in the country you're talking about.

People living the high life on the coasts aren't going to be hurt like people living at or below the poverty line. The people who were already taking out Payday loans every time an emergency came up.

And somebody living rural who has to drive a long way to their job is going to pay a hell of a lot more just to keep making money at their job than somebody who lives in the city.

I don't know what people in Norway make. Maybe they should have something to offer and get those prices down. What the hell is wrong with them for paying that much.

Bottom line is if you're somebody in America right now virtue signalling that everyone should be happy to pay more at the pump for somebody else's freedom when all you're really doing is funding the neo-con/neo-lib war machine, you obviously were born with a sliver spoon up your asshole and you can go right ahead and bounce on it.

You're so fuckin' done dude.

$12.92 per gallon non-premium and

I think $12.92 is too high. Elsewhere I see a price of only $10.194 per gallon in Norway.

6ix, what do you want? A separate price at the pump depending on your income? Poor people pay a dollar and as your income rises the price peaks at twenty? That would make it crystal clear that prices are arbitrary and capricious. Therefore, refineries set their price with more finesse so that you don't figure out what they are doing. What happens is that gas prices are set by refineries to make the maximum amount of money, which will vary by state and by country. The refineries don't want it to be too obvious that they are screwing you out of as much money as they can, which depends on how much money you have.

If you would bother to click on a link you would see that there are a bunch of countries that sell gasoline for under 10 cents per gallon. Even more that sell gasoline for less than a dollar. That is what gasoline truly costs. Are you being charged more? That is pure profit.

It is not gasoline prices, but there is petition to control drug prices. Americans are paying three times as much as other countries. It is not because the drugs are more expensive to make here. It is arbitrary and capricious pricing. Same drugs, just like gasoline, are sold by one factory all over the world, but the price you pay depends on what country you live in. You get charged the price that sellers, not the government, think they can get away with.

It doesn't matter what I want. But now that you mention it, I bet there'd be a lot less rich white Liberals virtue signalling about all of this if they were paying $20 per gallon.

At the end of the day, you can give as many excuses as you want to for all of this, but it's not going to matter when people vote in November. The gas prices were around $2.30 when Biden took office and they're $4.00 now (with some predicting it will be $5.00 to $6.00 by summer time). Enhanced unemployment benefits ended long ago. The eviction moratorium is up. Groceries just keep getting pricier along with everything else money can buy. All of that happened after Biden* took office, no matter who's fault anybody thinks that it is.

What your average voter is going to think is that the Biden* administration is speed-running the collapse of the economy, and the way that people vote is going to reflect their dissatisfaction with it no matter how many times Steven Colbert says that you should pay it and feel good about it.

Look at these prices per gallon:

Kuwait $1.308
Russia $1.413

Your car would burn that Kuwait fuel just fine, but your local refinery knows that you have no idea what prices are elsewhere, which why you pay too much.

You're having a one sided argument here.

Meanwhile, Biden* just signed the death warrant for his political career and that of many Democrats all over the country this week.

No need to argue me on this point. We're just going to sit here and watch it happen without a damn thing either of us can do about it.
