The American Prospect: Skyrocketing Rent Is Driving Inflation

https://archive.ph/N7MIw

The average rent has increased to over $2,000 in Bidenflationland, you say?

That's a shame. This epitome of angry white trash pays zero and didn't even notice that.

Boy. No wonder the youths, the blacks and the Mexiacans are leaving the Democratic party.

I mean, there's a million other reasons, but $2k per month rent on top of gas and food prices and shortages of everything all over? Sheesh.

6ix, if somebody torched your house, you would have no way to replace it because you have no insurance. With two jerrycans full of gasoline and one Scripto Aim'nFlame lighter, any malicious soul could destroy your entire life. Try to convince me that you have home owners insurance on your house or even Federal Flood Insurance. Unless you actually have insurance, you are angry poor white trash who is only one arson incidence away from homelessness.

Well, golly. If Libtards spent years paying out $1,000 each week to sit on couch, and everybody knows this, how could anybody guess that rents would increase? Oh, that's right - all reasonable folk did know this.
Welcome to Minimum Basic Wage, or whatever they called it.

I recently noticed that my house tripled in value in the last couple years, according to Zillow. No wonder I keep getting offers to buy it.

It is really too bad that the poor little Trumptards don't understand that they need insurance (or a large income) so that they can handle a catastrophe. But many angry-poor-white-trash-Trump-voters I know become homeless when disaster strikes because they have insufficient home & flood insurance and health insurance. Happens every hurricane season in Texas and every major illness.

I've prepared for the future. It's the one thing I'm really good at.

But let me ask you this, Second...

In the future where some malicious soul were to come and burn down my house, what do you suppose that I would do then, when that person put my back to the wall?

I'll tell you what I would do.

I would go to the end of the earth with the rest of what I've squirreled away and my exceedingly large and untapped credit line to hunt that person down and destroy their life.

That's not a threat. That is a promise.

Good thing for you that I'm the only one of the both of us who knows the identity of the other person. You are the type of guy who gets himself in a lot of trouble and you're not mature enough to handle that knowledge.

Wow. Just wow...

Are there split personalities living inside of that brain of yours?

You NEVER post on topic. You CONSTANTLY quote people and then proceed to write a wall of text that has nothing to do with the post you quoted. 80% of your posts are nothing but sad personal attacks on people.

Check your post history in this thread alone. I guaranty you that you've posted less about inflation than you have any other insane, dipshit thing that popped up in that little brain of yours and didn't filter out before your fingers did the typing.

Grow up.

This may be hard for you to understand, but only certain kinds of Americans have a problem with inflation. I'm not going to describe them because you're one of that certain kind and that kind doesn't take kindly to being called stupid about money because they like to brag about how smart they are. They're not so smart. My parents, on the other hand, had zero problems, never bragged about anything, and worked at Burger King. But my Father was a millionaire when he died in 2001 and my Mother was a multimillionaire when she died in 2013. They did that all by themselves. No lottery winning. No lucky breaks. No college education. No cheap house that becomes very valuable, as has happened to many Californians. And no nonsense, unlike many foolish Americans.

Here is the news story from today about foolish Americans: As of May, 58% of Americans — roughly 150 million adults — live paycheck to paycheck, according to a new LendingClub report. That’s down slightly from 61% who reported living paycheck to paycheck in April but up from 54% in May 2021.

Even top earners say they are stretched thin, the report found. Of those earning $250,000 or more, 30% are living paycheck to paycheck. (Another recent survey, from consulting firm Willis Towers Watson, estimated 36% of those earning $100,000 or more are living paycheck to paycheck.)

More at https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/27/more-than-half-of-americans-live-paych
eck-to-paycheck-amid-inflation.html

There is an over-abundance of dimwits in America. They tend to vote for guys like Trump, who promise them a better life and all they've got to do is vote for Trump. Only he can fix their lives. By the way, my parents knew who Trump was and they had a low opinion of him. And that was BEFORE he became enormously fat and known for cheating.

When I was a small child I observed angry poor white trash getting drunk and I took note of the consequences for them. You, who imagine yourself so superior, was 40 years old before you noted the consequences on yourself. Either you are 1) not observant, or 2) are not thinking, or 3) lack self-control. The Trump voters I'm familiar with have all 3 characteristics. You are a living version of Homer Simpson: "To Alcohol! The cause of... and solution to... all of life's problems." It is the theme that keeps being repeated on The Simpsons and yet Trumptards don't learn the simple lessons. At least Homer is smart enough to not smoke and not burn his money doing it. You can't make that brag, 6ix. I know dozens who died of esophageal cancer from their smoking and drinking. But before their habits killed the fools, the habits made them poorer.

There's zero chance that a retard like you is going to bring me down, buddy.

I seen hell and came out the other side alive and I'm a lot stronger for it.

Every year that goes by I become a better person, and that takes a lot of work. I have the luxury of free time that you never had, and I get to use that to make other people's lives better. Really better. Not the fake virtue signalling crap that you and people like you pretend to do online every day. And the more I improve myself and my situation, the more time I will have to devote to others.

And at the end of the day, just like I've already told you dozens of times before... I'm not worried about the inflation. I'm the king of buffers, baby. I'm not worried about shit right now.

You're the scared little man who is terrified that a world leader half the planet away is about to drop nukes on you before the planet burns up and still walks around wearing a mask everywhere you go even though you're quadruple boosted.

I couldn't imagine living your sad, scared little life.

No wonder you obsess about money so much. You have no love in your life. You have nobody who would give a damn about you if you didn't have money to give them. You have no self worth. You have no purpose.

You are a number. You made yourself a number.

With these words you have written the first line in your autobiography, an entire book about your "life affirming experiences". Your book publicist will thank you for dying young from the damage you have done to yourself while "researching" the book because death adds to your allure as an author. The authenticity of being deceased sells more books. Famous and dead author -- a double win for a crazy person and author called 6ixStringJack.

It is not at all surprising that Democrats earn about twice as much as Republicans since R's don't see themselves living in the future. What do dead people need more money for? For R's it is either heaven can't come soon enough or, for the nihilistic R's, eternity in the void.

Yeah. You keep talking about how much Democrats make. Most Democrats don't even pay any income taxes and get most of the handouts though.

Me? I make about $1,200 to $2,000 per month by doing nothing, simply by not having a rent or mortgage. And that money is untaxed, simply because it wasn't income.

How many times are we going to have this conversation dude? I owe nobody anything. I buy everything with cash. I've paid less than $200 in interest in my entire life.

I had a large enough cushion to survive five years of crippling binge drinking, and to pay for my dentures which were a direct result of it with cash. What on earth makes you think I'm not sitting on a large amount of money right now?

I don't have to make money. I only work when I want to.

There's no smell. I'm in great shape. My life is full of projects that I enjoy doing, and I answer to no one. I get to spend time helping people I care about and building my social credit, and I rarely ever have to sit in traffic... or pay to gas the car up, for that matter.

My comment that you quoted above was about how the rug of US Dollars could be pulled out from everybody at any moment, so I see no reason to continue to save money far beyond what I would ever spend. I already have shelter and transportation fully paid for. I'm stocked up on YEARS worth of consumables. I have no children that I need to worry about putting through college or leaving with an inheritance. I have no wife who is addicted to spending my money. Meanwhile, thanks to the internet, I have all the virtually free entertainment that I need to fill the off hours where I'm not doing things I love doing.

If the US dollar ever does come crashing down, I won't be very butt hurt about how much I saved, since I won't be losing millions of dollars that I never would have spent anyhow. I also rate my chances of success very high in a post-USD world.

How was work today, honey?

Do you know why gasoline prices are so high?
Because Putin destabilized global oil distribution?
No! It’s because …
Because crude oil producers decided to make record profits?
No! It’s because …
Because Republicans refused to stop price-gouging?
No! It’s because Biden turned a dial somewhere!

Thanks for compiling the list of all the bullshit that Joe* is spewing.

Gas was $2.30 here for 4 years while Trump was President.

Half of the increases on price from there occurred before you even learned Ukraine was a country earlier this year.

P.S. Even Jeff Bezos knows that you and Biden* are full of shit.

So, about those gas prices. As economists at the St. Louis Fed recently pointed out, there’s a longstanding phenomenon in the fuel market known as asymmetric pass-through or, more colorfully, rockets and feathers. When oil prices shoot up, prices at the pump shoot up right along with them (the rocket). And when oil prices plunge, prices at the pump eventually fall, but much more gradually (the feather).

Why this asymmetry? There have been a number of economic papers trying to understand it, pretty much all of which stress the market power of companies that face limited competition (something Bezos surely knows a lot about.) The clearest explanation I’ve seen is in a relatively old paper by Severin Borenstein, Richard Gilbert and A. Colin Campbell. I’d summarize their argument as follows: When oil prices shoot up, owners of gas stations feel empowered not just to pass on the cost but also to raise their markups, because consumers can’t easily tell whether they’re being gouged when prices are going up everywhere. And gas stations may hang on to these extra markups for a while even when oil prices fall.

Is there evidence for this story? Yes. Notably, the rockets and feathers phenomenon seems to be strongest in areas where individual gas stations face relatively little competition.

In such a situation, badgering gas stations to get their prices down may actually make some sense. We can argue about its effectiveness, but it’s not stupid, given what we know about the relevant market dynamics.

To cool historically high levels of demand, economists insist that we need to decrease the money supply in the economy. However, the correct path forward here does not lie in hiking interest rates, as the Fed has recently done.

In recent weeks, lawmakers and economists have proposed a variety of policy solutions that they argue could stop or slow the rise in consumer prices. However, one of the best paths forward to save the country from the inflation crisis is arguably taxing the rich.

America’s millionaires and billionaires are doing better than ever and have made out like bandits over the course of the pandemic. They can absolutely afford to have their wealth grow a little less than it normally would because of higher taxes. If that happens, they will want for nothing.

But taxing the rich needs to involve more than just taxing billionaires, which Biden is already pushing for. If we really want to tackle inflation, then taxing the rich must also include taxing ultra-profitable corporations that are price-gouging consumers. In a time of significant economic hardship for most Americans, corporations are more profitable than they’ve been in 70 years.

With inflation in the news today, aren't you curious about how the rest of the world is doing? Sure you are:

This only goes through May, since it takes a little while for the OECD to collect everything and put it up. In another week or two we'll see if everyone else joined us in our little June surge. I'll bet they did.

Yeah. When the world runs on the US Petrodollar, it's a real fucking shocker that when Joe*'s ineptitude and Democrats complacency leads the US into recession he takes the entire world down with him.

The pain the entire world is going through right now is the Joe Biden* administration's fault.

Only 40% of Americans are buying that it's Russia's fault, with only 25% of Americans "Strongly Agreeing" with that lie.

Even 25% of Democrats don't believe that, while only 67% do.

I suggest they go into the urban centers and ask those folk who vote Democrat if they agree that this is Russia's fault. While they're at it, ask them if they even care whether or not it is Russia's fault or if they give a shit about Ukraine.

Stop polling only rich white Democrats if you want to get actual legitimate numbers.

The window on that course of action is shrinking. Democrats are losing everybody else.

Lying to yourself and gaslighting the public is only a viable course of action when the economy is good.

6ix, you're a lunatic about blaming Democrats for everything. Here is another overpriced part of the economy: drug prices. Prices are so high that many prescriptions aren't being filled. That is worse for your health than skipping meals.

The political system CANNOT fix those prices, same as with your example of food, but there is a fix! Here is the story of one set of pills:

Save Big On Drugs
By A.T. On July 8, 2022 https://andrewtobias.com/save-big-on-drugs/

My doctor prescribed 7 tabs of a generic drug that Walgreen’s was set to fill for $161.92, considerably less than the $460 list price, Walgreen’s website let me know, because I have insurance.

But then I signed up for Mark Cuban’s CostPlusDrugs, and instead of those 7 tabs, which I canceled, I got ninety of them for $22, delivered. Which works out to 25 cents each versus $23. Without having to go wait in line to pick them up.

Check it out.

Here Mark Cuban explains how it works. (He also explains why the political system cannot lower prices.)

CostPlusDrugs https://costplusdrugs.com/medications/

Why has nobody opened a business like CostPlusDrugs before now? You'll have to watch the video, but the tl;dr version is the necessary government approval. It took years to go from idea to actual business selling at low prices. The people who were already in business before Mark Cuban will not voluntarily lower their prices. Why would they do that?

Food prices are always going up, same as drug prices

Funny how I can remember that these things were a problem for many years, but since you can't remember, you think now, today, this moment, is especially unique. I'd put up a chart about inflation going back to the beginning of the Federal Reserve keeping records of price, so that you could see what has been going on for decades, but this website is even better because it is easy to understand, assuming you can: https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

There are more of the same at https://www.google.com/search?q=adjust+prices+for+inflation+calculator

Raising prices is what Capitalism is, 6ix. That is how it has always worked in order to swindle, cheat, bamboozle the maximum amount of money from lower class Americans. Capitalism is why most of America is owned by a few million higher class Americans who understand how Capitalism works.

You can look up how much the higher class Americans own as easy as googling but it takes some clear thinking to understand how they got all your money and made it their money. Hint: they did it by the own efforts. It is not government that made them rich, despite the rich wanting you to blame the government for the rich swindling, cheating, and bamboozling the lower classes.

Why Republicans Are Having Gas Pains
July 21, 2022, 7:00 p.m. ET

Until just the other day, Republicans and conservative media loved, just loved talking about the price of gasoline. Indeed, “Remember how cheap gas used to be under Trump?” became a sort of all-purpose answer to everything. Is there now overwhelming evidence that the former president conspired in a violent attempt to overthrow the 2020 election? “Real America doesn’t care about the January 6th Committee. Gas is over $5 a gallon!” declared Representative Jim Jordan.

But now gas prices are falling. They’re down more than 50 cents a gallon at the pump; wholesale prices, whose changes normally show up later in retail prices, are down even more, suggesting that prices will keep falling for at least the next few weeks. And there’s a palpable sense of panic on Fox News, which has been reduced to whining about how the White House is taking a “victory lap.”

Actually, from what I can see, Biden administration officials are being remarkably restrained in pointing out the good news (which is probably a result of a slowing global economy). The larger point, however, is that Republican politicians’ focus on gas prices is profoundly stupid. And if it’s coming back to bite them, that’s just poetic justice.

Why is focusing on gas prices stupid? Let me count the ways.

First, while presidential policy can have big effects on many things, the cost of filling your gas tank isn’t one of them. For the most part, gasoline prices reflect the price of crude oil — and crude prices are set on world markets, which is one reason inflation has soared around the world, not just in the United States. Government spending in the Biden administration’s early months may have contributed to overall U.S. inflation — we can argue about how much — but has hardly anything to do with gas prices.

Second, while gas was indeed cheap in 2020, it was cheap for a very bad reason: Global demand for oil was depressed because the world economy was reeling from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Third, even before the pandemic struck, gas prices were unsustainably low.

Little-known fact: Prices at the pump plunged during President Barack Obama’s second term, falling from about $3.70 a gallon in mid-2014 — around $4.50 in 2022 dollars — to $2.23 on the eve of the 2016 election. News reports at the time marveled at Obama’s diffidence about claiming credit.

What happened? Mostly a boom in fracking, which increased U.S. oil production so much that it drove prices down around the world. As it turned out, however, that production boom didn’t make financial sense. Energy companies borrowed huge sums to invest in new drilling but never generated enough revenue to justify the cost. The fracking industry lost hundreds of billions even before the pandemic struck.

So high gas prices weren’t President Biden’s fault, and given the disappearance of the forces that used to keep gas cheap, it’s hard to think of any policy — short of creating a global depression — that would bring prices down to $2 a gallon, or even $3 a gallon. Not that Republicans are offering any real policy proposals anyway.

But the G.O.P. nonetheless went for the cheap shot of trying to make the midterm elections largely about prices at the pump. And this focus on gas is now giving the party a bellyache, as gas prices come down.

It is, after all, hard to spend month after month insisting that Biden deserves all the blame for rising gas prices, then deny him any credit when they come down. The usual suspects are, of course, trying, but it’s not likely to go well.

Some right-wing commentators are trying to pivot to a longer view, pointing out that gas prices are still much higher than they were in 2020. This happens to be true. But so much of their messaging has depended on voter amnesia — on their supporters not remembering what was really going on in 2020 — that I have my doubts about how effective this line will be.

More broadly, many Wall Street analysts expect to see a sharp drop in inflation over the next few months, reflecting multiple factors, from falling used car prices to declining shipping costs, not just gas prices. Market expectations of near-term inflation have come way down.

If the analysts and the markets are right, we’re probably headed for a period in which inflation headlines are better than the true state of affairs; it’s not clear whether underlying inflation has come down much, if at all. But that’s not an argument Republicans, who have done all they can to dumb down the inflation debate, are well placed to make.

This has obvious implications for the midterm elections. Republicans have been counting on inflation to give them a huge victory, despite having offered no explanation of what they’d do about it. But if you look at the generic ballot — which probably doesn’t yet reflect falling gas prices — rather than Biden’s approval rating, the midterms look surprisingly competitive.

Maybe real Americans do care about violent attacks on democracy, overturning Roe v. Wade and so on after all.

If we continue to get good news on inflation, November may look very different from what everyone has been expecting.

Gas is still more than $2 per gallon more than it was for 4 years under Trump.

Everything else costs a lot more than it did too, and those prices haven't come down at all and are still rising in many cases.

Nobody is going to forget any of this.

And nobody gives a shit about Russia, Ukraine or Roe v Wade that wouldn't have voted for Democrats even if gas was $15 per gallon.

Americans burn more and more gasoline as the price goes down. You can understand that, at least. But that is not what oil companies want. The oil companies will not let the price of gasoline go downward very far because low prices ruin them. The oil companies will raise prices every chance they get. And as time goes by, and there are fewer gasoline powered vehicles, the oil companies will keep raising prices so they can keep making the same level of profit on a smaller sales volume. That is NOT the Democrats raising prices, but your insistent claims that Democrats, not oil companies, are responsible makes you look stupid.

There won't be fewer gas powered vehicles. At least not in our lifetime.

The current model for electric vehicles is inefficient, far too expensive, and there is no resale value (or at least there won't be when people who are being lied to figure out that used cars end up requiring $25,000 for a new battery). There is also zero net benefit to climate change unless we start building nuclear power plants all over the world.

And once people figure out that electricity isn't magic and the price to power our homes is going to go up dramatically because of more EVs on the road, there will be a real hatred for EVs and the people that drive them.

Also, I've never claimed that Democrats directly raised oil prices. It is Democrat Party policy that has driven up prices. They will start going back down to reasonable levels after November.

You already know the Oil Companies' talking points to persuade Congress to not fund climate change legislation. With all your knowledge, Big Oil will make it worthwhile for you coming out of retirement and being their lobbyist:

The oil and gas industry has delivered $2.8bn (£2.3bn) a day in pure profit for the last 50 years, a new analysis has revealed.

The vast total captured by petrostates and fossil fuel companies since 1970 is $52tn, providing the power to “buy every politician, every system” and delay action on the climate crisis, says Prof Aviel Verbruggen, the author of the analysis. The huge profits were inflated by cartels of countries artificially restricting supply.

The analysis, based on World Bank data, assesses the “rent” secured by global oil and gas sales, which is the economic term for the unearned profit produced after the total cost of production has been deducted.

The study has yet to be published in an academic journal but three experts at University College London, the London School of Economics and the thinktank Carbon Tracker confirmed the analysis as accurate, with one calling the total a “staggering number”.

None of that addresses anything that you quoted of mine, or the fact that nobody can afford electric cars.

Until the tech is efficient, the price comes way down and we have nuclear power all over the world bolstering an electricity network that already struggles to keep up with demand while using coal to power it, EVs are never going to happen.

6ix, let me help you think about this.

1) I don't want drug prices going down because I own healthcare stocks.

2) I also don't want fuel prices going down because I'm in that business.

But I'm not the Democratic party. Neither is Husband Pelosi. We would both be better off if the Republican Party gets what it wants: prices should be set by the wealthiest Americans because that's Capitalism. Prices should not be lowered to help the poorer Americans because that's Communism or something.

Gee. Doesn't seem much like a terrible insurrection if everybody was laughing at the only guy who
ran away from it, huh?

Checkmate.

I consider the case of Jan 6th now open and shut with no further need to bring it up ever again.

Thank you, Ted.

The defense rests.

Thank you Ted. We'll put that message out everywhere.

I wouldn't have even known about Josh Hawley and how that incident and how the Leftist Media reacted to it undermined their entire messaging about January 6th if it weren't for you, buddy.

Maybe if you called Democrats out more often when they try to pull this shit every day people would actually watch your network.

Too bad you didn't read beyond the headline and understand what the next sentence means: "With inflation hitting a 40-year high in June, Americans are struggling to keep up with rising prices and putting less money aside for emergencies or long-term financial goals, several studies show."

It means, since you need help, 6ix, that the rich are doing very well at gathering all the poor people's money. After that big win you predict in November for Republicans, they won't pass any legislation to control prices because it is Communism for anyone but the rich to set prices.

Just because you change the definition of words when you don't like what the words mean doesn't mean we're not in a recession.

Keep lying to us Democrats and Legacy Media.

It's far too late for you to save yourselves.

The Democratic Party is dead come November, and the Legacy Media will follow.

heard news that McDonald's raised the price of plain cheeseburger, for the first time in 14 years. During the Rock-The-Vote Recession.
It stayed the same through all of Obaminomics, all of Trump's juggernaut economy, and the last 18 months of coasting from Trump.

I haven't had a fake meat patty from Mickey D's in 20 years.

I doubt they actually kept it the same price for that long though. I can all but guaranty you that the size of the burger got smaller.

Remember Wendy's Double Stacks in the late 90's/early 2000's? Biggest double cheeseburger in the world for only 99 cents.

You see a Double Stack today? It's like a double White Castle Slider. I bet it's more than a buck too.

I think it was last year that Little Caesar's bumped their price of Wings from $5.99 to $6.99
Now they just had to bump it another buck to $7.99

Well... for the first time I'm seeing a not insignificant bump in food prices on things that I buy.

The only question is do I restock things I don't need now at these prices or wait and hope that prices come down before I need them?

The sole purpose of inflation is to discover how much money you have and take all of it. There are actual people deciding what prices will be and the criteria for their decisions are what is best for the decision maker. Now is always the time to buy, unless the food is seasonal with a time for lowest prices when the harvest arrives.

Why are gas prices falling? Don't thank Biden — like we can't blame him when they go up by Amanda Drane, Aug. 5, 2022

https://web.archive.org/web/20220805111838/https://www.houstonchronicl
e.com/business/energy/article/Why-are-gas-prices-falling-Don-t-thank-Biden-17352990.php

How far have gasoline prices fallen?

The average gas price in Houston fell to $3.73 cents a gallon this week after soaring above $4 a gallon for the first time in history in the months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Prices here have fallen nearly 70 cents per gallon over the past month and 91 cents since prices here peaked at an average of $4.64 a gallon.

How do today’s gas prices compare to normal?

Houstonians are still paying roughly 97 cents per gallon more than they were last year, even as prices have steadily fallen. Nationally, gas prices are averaging around $4 a gallon, compared to $3 a gallon last year, when vaccines boosted summer travel, and $2.60 a gallon in July 2019.

The early pandemic brought the lowest gas prices in recent memory, knocking them down to $2 a gallon nationally in July 2020, as COVID raged and lockdowns ravaged demand.

Why is demand falling now?

Part of the decline is seasonal. People drive more in summer and the driving season peaks in early July and then tapers into the fall. The rest we can blame on inflation.

Inflation is cutting into consumers spending power and forcing them to cut back. It has has become such a driving force that it is doing more to push down demand for gasoline than the pandemic did in summer 2020, according to Energy Department data released Wednesday.

Demand for gasoline fell 8 percent to 8.5 million barrels per day over the last week — 13 percent below 9.8 million barrels per day during the same week last year, and nearly 1 percent below the same week in 2020.

Why aren’t diesel prices coming down more?

Diesel prices aren’t moderating as much as gasoline prices because diesel demand has not fallen as sharply and stockpiles are still incredibly low — inventories of distillates, which include diesel are still 25 percent below normal for this time of year.

Will prices keep falling?

Trends are looking good, but we’re not out of the woods, yet. Gasoline prices should progressively decrease if the U.S. economy weakens. If America avoids a recession and demand does not taper off, prices will likely stay elevated. Oil producers are still struggling to hire workers and access sold-out equipment, so they will need time to ramp up their capacity if demand stays high.

Tight refining capacity, too, also leaves us more vulnerable to catastrophe — a hurricane or fire that knocks out a refinery could lead to a spike in fuel prices.
