Last Updated: May 30, 2022 at 8:20 a.m. ET

Germany’s annual rate of inflation has risen in May at a faster pace than in April, beating forecasts and posting the highest reading since December 1973, according to preliminary data released by German statistics office Destatis on Monday.

Consumer prices rose 7.9% on year measured by national standards, against the 7.5% forecast by economists in a Wall Street Journal poll. They rose 8.7% on year by European Union harmonized standards, above economists’ forecast of 8.1%.

A similarly high inflation rate in Germany was last recorded in the winter of 1973, when mineral oil prices increased as a result of the first oil crisis, the statistics office said.

Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine, energy prices have markedly increased and have had a considerable impact on the high rate of inflation, Destatis said. Energy prices rose 38.3% in May year-on-year.

Food prices also increased above average, posting a 11.1% on-year increase, Destatis said.

Other factors pushing inflation higher are supply-chain problems due to the pandemic and significant price increases as the economic recovery got under way, Destatis said.

Consumer prices rose 0.9% on month by national standards and 1.1% by EU-harmonized standards. Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal had expected prices to rise 0.5% on month by national standards and 0.4% by EU-harmonized standards.

Final results will be released on June 14.

It's people very, very much like them that gave away German independence to the EU.

Yes.

They can thank their might-as-well-call-themselves-Democrat "leadership" for that and for the Muslims that rape their daughters every day.

The good news is that 2"x4"'s are finally going down in price. $4.80 by me now compared to $7.30 a few months ago. Still more than I'd ever pay for one.

The bad news is that by the time they get down to a sane price I won't need them anymore. Been using a lot of scrap that I've found elsewhere and asked around for.

Gas prices jump overnight.

Wow. There's a fucking shocker.

Gas prices climb 5 cents overnight, Americans are paying nearly $2 more from just one year ago
Americans are paying $1.87 more than they were just a year ago, when the price was $3.05 per gallon

Fox News is downplaying it here.

When I voted for Trump's re-election and Democrats were busy rigging it with millions of fraudulent mail-in fraud votes through the Covid lie they put the world through for 2 years, gas prices here were under $2.30.

The cheapest price near me is now $5.39.

Gas is now over $3.00 more than it was the day I voted for Trump.

Gasoline station pumps require electricity. The fuel tank on your vehicle can't be refilled when the power grid is down. Now that I think of it, even the jerry cans for the portable generator fuel tank can't be refilled when the power grid is down. In Texas, where the Republicans control the power grid, there are blackouts. That's because building and maintaining a highly reliable power grid costs money and spending money on equipment not required by law reduces profitability. Much more profitable to have the grid shutdown. And shutdowns/shortages cause price spikes, which are extremely profitable for people who sell natural gas to electric power plants:

This month, the average residential rate listed on the site was 18.48 cents per kilowatt hour. That's up from 10.5 cents in June 2021, according to data provided by the Association of Electric Companies of Texas. It also appears to be the highest average rate since Texas deregulated electricity over two decades ago. Jun 2, 2022

business/energy/2022/06/02/were-in-trouble-electric-rates-in-texas-have-surged-over-70-as-summer-kicks-in
/

I live in Texas and I really like this Republican way of selling electricity because it is very remunerative, assuming you are a seller of electricity, natural gas, or gasoline.

That's not what a Generac's purpose is. My DeWalt genny is what they'd want for that.

Generacs are installed permanently at your residence, like a central air A/C unit would.

Its purpose is to turn natural gas into electricity on the spot, only doing so if power goes out in your residence and it automatically flips on to take over the job of powering your house.

Or... If Second and the Democrat idiots get their way and we start paying $2 or more per kWh for electricity to feed their electric car addiction you could just get one and power your house on natural gas 24/7.

Even with Biden*'s price hike, it would be cheaper to power your house on Natural Gas than it would to power it on Electric when tens of millions of people are charging their cars.

Electricity from fossil fuels costs 17 cents per kilowatt-hour. The people in the fossil fuel business are serious about increasing inflation (and making more money for themselves) by not drilling new natural gas wells.

Meanwhile, Solar energy costs average between 3 cents and 6 cents per kilowatt-hour and are trending down, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Sadly for you, there won't be lower prices for Solar because in a Capitalist system the selling price will be about the same as natural gas generated electricity, but the cost to the Capitalist for Solar will be going down, down, down.

Charge your vehicle while the Sun shines.

There isn't enough unused land on the planet for all of your solar panels and wind farms that you idiots would need to power your cars. And just think of all of the deforestation necessary, not to mention all the good farm land gone to waste for your insane little project.

Nope.

Until we build a lot of nuclear plants, your electric cars are a fuckin' pipe dream.

Oh... and P.S. That stupid little Chevy pickup that you fake bought will only charge to 80% in 41 to 44 minutes from 15%. (Anything beyond 80% slows significantly) That means, unless you have a few hours to burn charging it to full, you're going to get about 320 miles on it before you have to take an almost hour long break to get back to driving. And that's only if you aren't using the pickup truck to haul anything and you're not a fatass.

And 80% of 200 kWh is 160 kWh, so do have fun charging that up to 80% for a measly 320 miles at over $300 when we're paying $2 per kWh after you retards flood the roads with these things. I don't use 160 kWh in a month to power everything in my house. Not even close. Think about that. It will cost more energy for you to drive 320 miles than it costs for most people to run their entire homes for a month. Often by 2 or 3 times in non-A/C months.

And even at today's prices in states where the price is still reasonable, that's going to cost you over $20-$30 plus whatever your frequent down time waiting for the thing to charge up costs you in lost time.

Let's not even mention how crappy your cell phone batteries start behaving the older the phone gets. But you probably don't notice that since you upgrade to a new phone every year or two.

You sure do write a lot that is NOT true. Given the U.S. consumes about 4 petawatt hours of electricity per year, we’d need about 13,600,000 acres or 21,250 square miles of solar panels to meet the total electricity requirements of the United States for a year.

Can't be too surprised that sloppyseconds can't post a sensible chart.

Keep in mind that those 42 gallon barrels of oil, after refining, can result in 20 gallons of gasoline.

So the scaling on those overlapping charts is totally goofy, with NEGATIVE $30 per barrel equalling $2 per gallon after the costs of refining. Or, NEGATIVE $30 per barrel plus refining costs results in $40 of gasoline - about $70 per barrel in refining costs, at maximum economy.

But that graphic does somewhat help to illustrate how gas prices were comparatively low (see how that gap between the lines is bigger?) during Trump, and following Bush43, but Obama and Obiden were able to crank up gas prices (see how that gap gets squished?) by restricting the supply.

So, under Bush43 oil was $116.50 per barrel with unrestricted flow, plus refining costs resulted in about $70 of gasoline. Meaning, about $46 discount after refining cost. (That uber-evil Bush is at fault). WAIT! Getting $70 after paying $116 - that must be excessive profit!!

Currently, with Obiden Energy Disaster barrels are at $115.83 and after refining costs the results are $100 of gasoline (about $16 discount). So with supply restrictions, shutoffs and shutdowns, there is an extra $30 per barrel of refining, transportation, and storage cost - Obama must be creaming his jeans. But wait - selling $100 after paying $115? That must be excessive profit!!!

Under Trump, peak barrel price looks about $75, with gas price about $2.90 - so after refining costs, that $75 resulted in about $58 of gas. About $17 discount.
Lower prices under (non-Lockdown) Trump, like 2019, seems like $47 per barrel, and $2.25 per gallon of gas. So after refining costs, that $47 barrel results in $45 of gasoline.

Under Obama in 2011, peak barrel prices seem about $115 with $4 per gallon. So that $115 plus refining costs results in $80 of gas.
Later that year, when barrels dropped under $80, gas was about $3.50 per gallon. So about $70 of gas after paying almost $80 plus refining costs.

By end of 2021, Obiden was able to get barrel prices up to about $85 per barrel, with $3.40 per gallon gas. So that was $68 of gas after paying only $85 plus refining costs. That must be excessive profits!!!

After Trump in mid-2020, with about $40 per barrel and $2.20 per gallon. Resulting in $44 of gas, this is still not nearly as good as -$30 per barrel.

Under Bush43, when barrels got down to about $30, and gas was $1.60, that was about $32 of gas from that $30 barrel.

JewelStaiteFan, I can tell you are NOT an engineer. What did you do for a living before becoming a cranky old man? Deliver letters or some other low skilled job requiring "literacy"?

And you don't even understand what a refinery does, do you? A standard U.S. barrel contains 42 gallons of crude oil which yields about 44 gallons of petroleum products. The refinery sells all 44 gallons, not just the 19 for gasoline.

I remember Trump taking credit for the stock market going up. When it went down, he didn't take credit. By the way, he has zero control of it going up or down. One thing he did have control over was the National Debt. There is $1 trillion per year in taxes NOT being collected, but it can't be because the Republicans in Congress refuse to fund more IRS auditors. I am waiting for Trump's personal income tax audit to end, but it never does because Trump has 12 full-time tax attorneys, whose objections keep the one IRS auditor who works on Trump busy for 8 hours per week. Then there are the tax cuts Trump signed. The “King of Debt” promised to reduce the national debt — then his tax cuts made it surge. The national debt has risen by almost $7.8 trillion during Trump’s time in office. That’s nearly twice as much as what Americans owe on student loans, car loans, credit cards and every other type of debt other than mortgages, combined.
https://www.propublica.org/article/national-debt-trump

The Capitalists of America know about Trump's $7.8 trillion. That is free money floating around. The Capitalists vacuum the $7.8 trillion into their bank accounts by raising prices.

No. I don't.

Given the U.S. consumes about 4 petawatt hours of electricity per year, we’d need about 13,600,000 acres or 21,250 square miles of solar panels to meet the total electricity requirements of the United States for a year.

lol. freeenergy.com? You are a stupid asshole.

The average monthly residential usage of electricity per house in America: 893 kWh per month

https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=97&t=3

How many vehicles are driven in the US: 276 Million

https://www.bankrate.com/insurance/car/car-

80% of the energy stored in a Lightning (The most likely you'd fill it up to on the road): 160 kWh

How many miles you get out of an 80% charge on your Lightning (when it's brand new and the battery hasn't started degrading): 320 miles

How many kWh would it take to charge 276 Million Lightnings to 80% once: 44,160,000,000 kWh.

Average miles driven per car in the US annually: 14,263 miles

https://www.kbb.com/car-advice/average-miles-driven-per-year/

14,263 miles divided by 320 miles (80% charge on a Lightning) = 44.57 annual 80% charges

How many kWh would it take to charge 276 million Lightnings 44.57 times annually:

44,160,000,000 x 44.57 = 1,968,211,200,000 kWh or 1.97 Petawatt hours

RESIDENTIAL electricity use in America is only a fraction of the 4 Petawatt hours you claimed.

1.464 Petawatt hours, to be exact.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/560927/us-retail-electricity-consu
mption-by-sector
/

So 1.97 Petawatt hours for cars + 1.464 Petawatt hours for current residental use = 3.434 Petawatt hours.

That's 235% what residential consumers in America currently consume in electricity.

But that's okay. I know that you know electricity is magical.

When a Trumptard uses the word "magical" it is a clear sign they think they know something they don't know. I will explain it to you: If you buy a $35,000 vehicle, there will be $3,500 invested in the energy infrastructure to power it. It could be refinery/pipelines/fuel trucks/gas stations. Or it could be solar cells/high voltage transmission/recharge stations. If gasoline becomes obsolete, the $3,500 of equipment for refineries, etc. is obsolete and destined for the scrape heap. You use the word "magical" because you don't want to think about scraping and rebuilding. You don't want to replace the obsolete equipment. I suspect you are a hoarder with a garage full of obsolete machinery. Trumptards really do cling to their stuff as precious as if their old stuff is their irreplaceable hand or their foot. It is probably why Trumptards cannot pick themselves up and move to better places when the old place goes into decline: see West Virginian out-of-work coal miners who all vote for Trump because he's gonna bring back the coal industry.

So when you pay $35,000 for an Electric Vehicle which cost $90,000 to make, then $9,000 per vehicle is needed for (but not spent on) the infrastructure for it?

A US town has rejected plans for solar panels amid fears they would 'suck up all the energy from the sun'. The town motto is "I'm an American. I don't have to understand anything."

Jane Mann, a retired "science" teacher, said she was concerned the panels would prevent plants in the area from photosynthesizing, stopping them from growing. She also questioned the high number of cancer deaths in the area, saying no one could tell her solar panels didn't cause cancer.

The Biden administration has made electric vehicles a top priority. The administration wants half of all new vehicles sold to be electric by 2030. Some states, like California, are setting bolder targets, while some other states appear to be moving in the opposite direction. Last month, the bill was introduced in North Carolina that can only be described as the most anti-electric car bill to date.

This North Carolina bill has one goal -- to keep people from buying an electric car. Will electric vehicles be the latest flashpoint in America’s culture wars? Legislators in North Carolina believe that electric vehicles are unjust.

The law requires that there be no free chargers for electric batteries while vehicles are parked for shopping. You must be billed the full price for the electricity. And if there are paid chargers, the stores also must have a gasoline filling station. Stores are NOT required to bill for gasoline. Trumptards are crazy, but smart enough to not ban electric vehicles from the roads. Even Trumptards realize that electric cars can't be declared illegal.

How is this story the source of my "hatred" for EVs?

I've already been very clear what the problems will be, but you skipped that because you don't understand math.

Nobody needs to pass any laws to keep people from buying them. Once a few million of you idiots are driving them around, nobody is going to be letting you charge them up for free. There is no such thing as free. The only reason that companies are even saying that they'll allow customers to charge up for free while shopping is because it's easy virtue signalling points on Social Media. It's especially easy to say this when a fraction of a percent of people are driving them and they haven't even made any plans to break ground to install any of these "free" chargers yet.

One single charge of your Chevy Lightning from 10% to 80% is twice the electricity the average US residence uses in an entire month and gets you 320 miles of driving with no load in the bed. The coal miners will be thanking you for giving all of their jobs back plus some. And of course the Government is going to want their taxes on your charges, so no... You will not be charging your cars for free while buying groceries.

(And incidentally, there's nothing in that NC law requiring that companies don't give away gas for free because OBVIOUSLY that will never happen. Democrats have sold a dumb minority of the public that electricity is magic and free, so the days of companies giving away free charges to customers will end as soon as they begin once they have the sticker shock of that first month's energy bill).

Once everybody's prices for powering their homes skyrockets and people start getting brown and blackouts because of the additional strain you goons are putting on the grid that already has problems keeping up with the needs, people who don't have EVs aren't going to hate the EVs. They're going to hate YOU.

The people who are going to hate EVs are the people who own them.

Falsus in unum, falsus in omnibus

What I see over and over, since I was a little kid first following politics when Barry Goldwater, Republican Presidential Candidate, wanted to nuke North Vietnam to win a war against Communism, was that the kind of people who would vote for Duke Nukem Goldwater, Nixon, Reagan, Bush, or Trump, have shaky minds.

Even as a child, I could see that the adults around me who wanted to drop H-bombs on Vietnam were stupid. They were stupid about H-bombs and they were stupid about many other things a 12 year old could easily understand. Unfortunately, I still respected adults who deserved contempt. I should have made the connection before I volunteered for Vietnam that these people are stupid in many things. Later, I realized in everything they do or say or believe they are stupid. They are natural born losers, the same opinion I had about many people, all of whom later voted for Trump.

These people are the living embodiment of 6ix's motto: "Falsus in unum, falsus in omnibus." A more complete translation: "A dumb-ass in one thing, a dumb-ass in everything, including electric cars." I stopped giving careful consideration to the logic/ the calculations/ the justifications dumb-asses give for what they believe. It's a time waste to listen to them. Their whole meager lives and all their myriad little problems which I easily avoided as a child are proof they know less than they think.

Be wrong at your own peril. (And Democrats are done anyhow, but this legacy will just remain a constant reminder to people why not to vote for them in the future too).

Up to this point, I've provided hard math and all of the plausible scenarios which will be the outcome of a larger amount of Leftists making the switch to EVs. All you've done is insult me and poor shame people who used to vote Democrat but won't ever be making that mistake again.

Your Lightning was an absolute waste of money, and you will be making the lives of other people worse simply by the fact that you own it and charge it.

The only good news to come out of this is that YOU will come to regret your purchase too, so everybody loses.

Not when you actually load it up with anything which, spoiler alert, is what real men usually do with their pickup trucks.

You also use twice the energy it takes for the average residence to power their home for an entire month every time you charge it to 80% just so you can drive 320 miles when it's just you with nothing in the bed and your fake grandchildren aren't in the truck with you.

By identifying Republicans, and only firing Republicans, Democrats can reduce inflation to zero!

Here’s why Larry Summers wants 10 million people to lose their job

Last Updated: June 21, 2022 at 6:03 a.m. ET

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers says there needs to be a surge in unemployment to curb inflation, which Federal Reserve policymakers say doesn’t need to happen for price growth to cool off.

According to Bloomberg News, Summers said in a speech on Monday from London there needs to be a lasting period of an unemployment rise to contain inflation — either, a one year spike to 10%, two years of 7.5% unemployment, or five years of 6% unemployment.

Put a different way, Summers is calling for the unemployed rolls to swell to roughly 16 million from just under 6 million in May.

President Joe Biden said he spoke with Summers on Monday, though he said a U.S. recession can be avoided.

The way Summers framed the numbers suggests he’s talking about what’s known as the Sacrifice Ratio, which is the link between unemployment and inflation. According to Jason Furman, the former chair of President Obama’s Council of Economics Advisers, in the 25 years before the pandemic, the Sacrifice Ratio has been six percentage points — meaning one year of a 6 percentage point jump in unemployment, or two years of a 3 percentage point increase in the jobless rate, would be required to knock down inflation by a full percentage point.

In May, the unemployment rate was 3.6%. What Summers is basically saying is he wants the unemployment rate to rise to a level that would knock a full percentage point off inflation. The core PCE price index was 4.9% year-over-year in April.

Current Federal Reserve officials don’t accept that there needs to be such a stark trade-off. The Fed’s forecasts call for the unemployment rate to rise to 4.1% next year in a way that would cool core inflation to 2.3%. Christopher Waller, a Fed governor, said the trade-off was less between inflation and unemployment, than between inflation and job openings.

Jerome Powell, the Fed chair, also said such a stark trade-off wasn’t needed. “Take for example in the labor market, so you have two job vacancies essentially for every person actively seeking a job, and that has led to a real imbalance in wage negotiating. You could get to a place where that ratio was at a more normal level and you would expect to see those wage pressures move back down to level where people are still getting healthy wage increases, real wage increases, but at a level that’s consistent with 2% inflation,” Powell said at the last press conference.

That's funny.

Unemployment was 3.5% in 2019 and inflation was normal.

And why are you taking any talk of an imbalance in wage negotiations in favor of labor as if it were a bad thing? You wanted $15/hr minimum wage and said that it wouldn't factor into inflation.

Why fire minimum wage employees when the government can most effectively hurt sellers of over-priced merchandise by encouraging employers to fire over-paid people who make $53,490 or more per year? - https://www.jobted.com/salary

This is how these anti-inflation measures work:

Send a signal to sellers that they have set their prices too high.

The only way to send that signal is to reduce their sales of over-priced merchandise.

The only way to do that is to take money away from buyers. (Or government sets prices. Not gonna happen in America.)

The most direct ways to take money away from buyers is to raise the interest rates they pay and to lower their incomes.

What better way to lower incomes than by firing people, especially people with high earned incomes?

This is how Capitalism was designed to work. The design was done by Capitalists for Capitalists' best advantage. Firing employees is good for Capitalists because it reduces their costs. The choices for Capitalists are raise prices and reduce costs (which means firing employees, especially high priced ones), which is exactly what American Capitalists have done for all my life.

See the nice price increases, year after year? That is perfect for Capitalists:

Unchecked corporate power is fueling inflation. (Personally, I love the system, but then I'm not in your position of having nothing to sell but my labor.)

by Phillip Longman June 20, 2022

https://washingtonmonthly.com/2022/06/20/its-the-monopoly-stupid/

Inflated heads: Today’s high prices were brought to you by Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy, Ralph Nader, Stephen Breyer, Alfred Kahn, Ronald Reagan, Robert Bork, and Larry Summers.

On the evening of October 24, 1978, President Jimmy Carter sat up straight behind the Resolute desk in the Oval Office, interlocked his hands, and began reading from the prepared remarks laid out in front of him. “I want to have a frank talk with you tonight about our most serious domestic problem,” Carter told the camera. “That problem is inflation.”

Since the summer, the cost of living had been increasing at a rate not seen since the Ford administration. Worse, the new burst of inflation was accompanied by stubbornly high unemployment, creating a return of dreaded “stagflation.” According to one of his key advisers, Stuart Eizenstat, Carter worried that if they didn’t come up with something new and substantive to say that night, “we’ll be laughed at.”

The largest single cause of accelerating inflation during Carter’s term was monopolistic control over the flow of oil, but the president saw no palatable options for breaking up the OPEC cartel anytime soon. Nor, thanks to political opposition from both Big Business and Big Labor, could he put in the kind of mandatory wage and price controls Richard Nixon had once ordered up.

Also off the table was giving in to Republican demands for dramatic cuts in government spending and higher interest rates. Carter was not yet desperate enough to sign on to that agenda because it risked a wholesale revolt from Democrats to his left like U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy and would quite likely induce a recession.

So Carter played another card: Blame inflation on government bureaucrats.

Carter told the nation that his administration was “cutting away the regulatory thicket that has grown up around us and giving our competitive free enterprise system a chance to grow up in its place.” As evidence, he pointed to a bill he had just signed that stripped the Civil Aeronautics Board of its power to regulate airline fares and routes. “For the first time in decades, we have actually deregulated a major industry,” Carter bragged. “Of all our weapons against inflation, competition is the most powerful,” he explained. “Without real competition, prices and wages go up, even when demand is going down.”

Carter tapped a high-energy Cornell economist turned policy entrepreneur named Alfred Kahn to oversee the dismantling of the CAB, and was so pleased with the result that he elevated Kahn to the new position of “inflation czar.” Later, Carter would double down on the idea that the most powerful tool for fighting inflation was depriving the government of its ability to regulate prices, signing bills that deregulated railroads and trucks, and passing the Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act, which set in motion deregulation of the financial sector. The overarching theory was that if the government would just get out of the way, market competition would lead to greater efficiency and therefore to lower prices for consumers.

Most Republicans applauded these moves, for obvious reasons, but Carter also got support from important Democrats. Ted Kennedy was a key supporter of the airline deregulation bill Carter signed that day. Influenced heavily by Kahn and by Ralph Nader’s Center for Study of Responsive Law, many had come to believe that federal regulatory agencies like the Interstate Commerce Commission and the CAB had been captured by the industries they were supposed to regulate. Stephen Breyer, the future U.S. Supreme Court justice, successfully teamed up with another Kennedy staffer, Phil Bakes, in helping the senator to become a champion of the new liberal cause of getting better deals for consumers through deregulation. The “New Deal faith in the science of the regulatory art,” Kennedy said at one point, was “a delusion.”

Today, we are paying a big price for that false lesson. Democrats and Republicans cooperated over the next four decades in dismantling much of the regulatory apparatus and antitrust enforcement that since the New Deal (and even before) had governed America’s financial, transportation, and telecommunication markets, foreign trade, and corporate mergers. As they did so, the underlying assumption was always that less government intervention in markets meant more competition, and that more competition would in turn bless the world’s consumers with more and cheaper stuff. But over the long term, the primary effect of this radical change in the country’s political economy was to foster an enormous growth in corporate power that set us up for today’s inflation.

Hey, that graph looks like the Inflation caused by Democrat Congressional Budgetary bloat, called "earmarks"

By golly, yes it is, because it is called Consumer Price Index, which Libtards demand increase each year.
As their Union bosses require.

Golly, Arthur has inadvertently posted a pertinent graph, even tho he does not comprehend it or its meaning.

Kinda curious how Arthur neglects to mention the dirty secret that Libtards don't want gullible voters to remember.

Capitalists who don't reduce their costs/expenses and/or increase their prices are called:
"Ex businessmen" - or, "Out of Business" aka "Failed Capitalists"

The inflation is caused by Libtard Democrats in Congress.
Sensible, honest Americans just need to work within or around the corrupt Democrats and their games.

No Capilatist can stop this lunacy, apparently even when they get into The Oval Office.

I absolutely don't say that. Very recent post history shows that I've said that the Democrats are regretting stealing the 2020 election now because Trump would have had to deal with some economic fallout because of the bullshit Democrat lead Covid shutdowns that even JohnsHopkins has come out and said had a negligible effect doing anything to combat Covid.

It's just that EVERYTHING they've done since they've been in power has made that situation worse for everyone. You included. Nobody here believes any of your bullshit fantasies about yourself. Getting back to inflation . . .

Rental car companies provide a good example of how consolidation amplifies inflation. The falloff in travel following the outbreak of COVID initially hit the industry hard. Rental companies dropped their prices by more than a fifth and began selling off cars. Hertz, which also controls its former competitors Dollar and Thrifty, declared bankruptcy. But the industry was soon able to more than recoup its early losses and go on to post record profits through ongoing price gouging.

That’s because it operates as an effective oligopoly. The Hertz group, which emerged from bankruptcy after attracting $5.9 billion in new hedge fund money, shares the market with only two remaining major players: Avis (which controls Budget and Zipcar) and Enterprise (which controls Alamo and National Car Rental). Because there was so little competition left in the industry, it didn’t have to worry about the worldwide shortage of new cars that occurred during the pandemic. It learned instead that it could pull in record profits just by selling off one-third of its inventory into a red-hot used car market while jacking up the price of renting the remaining cars in its diminished fleet. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price of renting a car or truck is now 47 percent higher than it was in 2019 before the pandemic struck.

To keep this sweet deal going, the Big Three rental companies don’t have to engage in illegal price fixing. With so few players, it is easy to coordinate prices and output just by sending signals to one another in public. Hertz’s CFO announced on an earnings call this April, “We don’t view inflation as necessarily a bad thing for us, as this creates more discipline across the industry in terms of pricing and asset allocation, which you can see currently.” Just to make sure investors and other members of the oligopoly got the message, he let it be known that Hertz is committed to keeping its prices high by keeping fewer cars in its fleet than is necessary to meet demand. And what is the company doing with the money it saves with this strategy? It’s redeploying its assets to engage in a $2 billion stock buyback program.

It should come as no surprise that other members of the oligopoly are engaged in the same pricing and allocation “discipline.” Rather than build its fleet size back up to meet surging demand, the Avis Budget Group holding company, for example, bought back 20 percent of its outstanding stock in just four months late last year. According to its CFO, this represents “over $1 billion of value created for shareholders.” In May, Avis reported record first-quarter profits, further swelling its stock price by double digits. Meanwhile, anyone needing to rent a car paid more for it—if they could find one.

I own everything I have. I have zero debt. That's all all on me too, because I'm not a trust-fund baby. I spend my free time ACTUALLY helping other people instead of virtue signalling about it. I hit rock bottom with addictions that kill most people and turned it around without any 12 step programs or religion.

I don't resemble angry poor white trash any more than you represent highly intelligent and successful people.

No. It's not. I hate the Democrats for pushing me to the right.

STOP imagining that you are an independent mind, because your pretensions makes you look foolish as some fat slob who dresses up in a Malcolm Reynolds costume (including the prop pistol) for the local Comic Book Convention.

No. They don't. Only to a lunatic like you, Arthur.

Quote:

Go to the Convention as what you are: angry poor white trash who votes Republican and can't get enough Donald Trump.

I don't do cons, nerd.

Getting back to inflation . . .

That is what the thread is about. But all you want to seem to talk about is me.

I think you have a bigger crush on me than Nilbog did.
