Twelve Republicans, while voting against conviction because Trump was no longer president, explicitly deplored his behavior or assigned him some blame for the attack. One of the 12, Sen. Rob Portman, said Trump had violated his oath of office. These 12 senators, combined with the 57 who voted to convict, formed a two-thirds majority to condemn the former president.

What about the others? There’s a hard core of about 15 Republicans who have reached for any excuse, denounced any criticism of Trump, or concocted smears to deflect the evidence against him. It’s a shameful nest of apologists. Here’s how they rationalized their votes:

1. The evidence is fake. House impeachment managers documented their case with hours of video, as well as written comments from Trump and the Capitol assailants. Nevertheless, some senators refuse to accept any of it. “The entire House managers’ case is based on hearsay,” said Sen. Ted Cruz. “The trial record was a complete joke,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham. Even after Trump’s lawyers agreed to admit as evidence a written statement from a Republican congresswoman about an incriminating conversation with House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, Graham dismissed her account.

2. . . . 3. . . .

8. Anyone who denounces Trump must be denounced. Graham and Johnson repeatedly castigated Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for objecting to Trump’s conduct. In radio interviews over the weekend, Johnson said McConnell should “zip his lip” because his criticism of Trump “divides the Republicans.” Johnson also repudiated the Jan. 6 speech in which McConnell criticized Trump for lying about the election results. Meanwhile, in Fox News interviews, Graham complained that McConnell had “put a load on the back of Republicans” by making anti-Trump statements, to which other Republican senators would now have to respond.

In a statement entered into a congressional record that was released on Thursday, Mitt Romney said Trump's denial of the election results was "one of the most reprehensible acts" possible and warned that the perpetuation of this "big lie" threatens the American people.

On January 3, three days before the deadly insurrection, The Washington Post leaked an audio recording of a phone call where Trump pressured Georgia's secretary of state to "find" more votes in his favor. Romney described this as "a heinous act that merited impeachment" in his statement.

"I hear many calls for unity. It is apparent that calling for unity while at the same time appeasing the big lie of a stolen election is a fraud," Romney wrote. "It is in the service of that lie that a mob invaded the Capitol on Jan. 6."

He continued: "Now that the impeachment trial is behind us, it falls to each of us to affirm what we all know: President Biden won the election through the legitimate vote of the American people.

"The division in America will only begin to heal in the light of this truth, a truth which must now be affirmed by each of us in this chamber."

Don't worry about Romney either. He's not going to be in office much longer.

I voted to convict President Trump. We must consider how we came to a point where a president felt he could do as he did without suffering meaningful consequence.

It has become almost cliché to say that America is divided as never before in modern history. So, too, is the observation that this division is the product of a decline in trust in our governing institutions, of a decline in the social bonds forged in churches and charities and communities, of expanding income inequality, and of trusted news sources replaced by cable and internet algorithms calculated to inflame our prejudices.

Less unanimous are the predictions of where this division will lead. Even so, no one suggests that it will lead to a better future. Some envision an economy buffeted by policies drafted by the extreme wings of the political parties. Others claim that authoritarianism will replace democracy. Some anticipate social unrest and violence. A few even predict civil war. Still others fear that a weakened America will become vulnerable to an opportunistic foreign foe.

We instinctively know that the growing division represents a growing danger. Academics and pundits may promote cures, but in our hearts, we know that their bromides won’t heal the rift: People aren’t going to return to mainstream media, churches aren't going to experience a resurgence, and income inequality will remain a persistent feature of the global digital economy.

Throughout history, only one thing has been able to unite a divided nation: great leaders—leaders like Churchill who inspired a fearful nation; leaders like Lincoln who mustered the national will to save the Union; and leaders like Reagan who raised our spirits from suffocating malaise. Leaders like these also have been essential in our churches and universities and businesses and charities, and just as importantly, in our homes.

With our nation so divided, so vulnerable to economic distress or to civil violence or even to foreign adversaries, the need for leadership that unites and uplifts, that calls on our better angels, is as great as we have ever known. The corollary is that the failure of leaders to unite, to speak truth, to place duty above self, is as dangerous as we have ever known.

With the country as divided as it assuredly is, a person in a position of leadership who inflames passions with the purpose of perpetuating untruth commits a singularly dangerous sin against the Republic.

Civic unity does require truth. There is one untruth that divides the nation today like none other: it is that the election was stolen, that there was a massive conspiracy, more secret and widespread than any in human history, so brilliant in execution that no evidence can be found of it and no observer among the tens of thousands in our intelligence agencies will speak of it.

That lie brought our nation to a dark and dangerous place. Invented and disseminated by the President, it poisoned our politics and our public discourse.

No. YOU must consider that because you're deranged and pushing a false narrative.

Let's put it another way. 12 Republican Senators said Trump was guilty but wouldn't convict him because it would damage their political careers. 7 more Republicans voted to convict because they weren't afraid of Trump but were afraid of looking like gullible fools to believe Trump's lies.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I see the never-Trumpers are working mightily to reverse the historical fact that Trump wasn't convicted in this latest impeachment, by shifting the goalposts (away from how senators voted to what they 'thought') ... just as they worked mightily to ignore the fact that there was no Trump-Russia "collusion" in the Mueller Report by shifting those goalposts.

Their obsession continues ...

If the Democrats convinced even 1 Republican Senator that Trump was guilty of insurrection, that would be proof Trump incited an insurrection. Democrats convinced 7 Republican Senators about Trump.

The 7 Republicans, who make up 14% of the GOP conference in the Senate, mirrors the 14% of Republicans nationwide who believe Trump should have been convicted and barred from holding future office in the poll, which was conducted by Ipsos in partnership with ABC News using Ipsos' KnowledgePanel. 88% of Democrats and 64% of independents say Trump should have been convicted. The Democrats will be reminding independent voters in 2024 that 86% (=100%-14%) of Republicans would vote in favor of keeping a criminal like Trump in office. Do independents want to vote for an unconvicted criminal and see what he does in power? Then go ahead and do it.

What is amusing about Republicans is that they have and will vote for a criminal, but that is to be expected since Republicans don't grasp that their lives are full of unnecessary drama and pain because their judgement of people is atrocious.

BARR: Congress Trying To Erase The Past Is Pretty Clear Evidence We Have Entered The Twilight Zone

In one of the most recent examples of this phenomenon, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, declared something that historically, ethically, and legally would in the past have been considered laughable — erasing official actions taken previously by the Congress of the United States.

More specifically, McCarthy last week publicly endorsed legislation that purports to remove from the official record of the House of Representatives the 2019 and 2021 impeachments of former President Donald Trump; expunging the record of those proceedings as if they never took place.
