Both Volcker and Morrison came off rather weak in their testimony. Volcker especially was walking a thin tightrope, talking out both sides of his mouth.

Morrison and others questioned Vindman's judgement....huh!?

Vindman came prepared.

And now the Army has volunteered and offered Vindman and his family protection.

What a fucking country.

I'm curious if you're watching, or at least listening to, the actual testimony, or if you're depending on the (obviously highly selective / propaganda) 40 second sound bites for your information.

A very bad impeachment hearings day for Donald Trump

Had Vindman stood alone — under attack as he was from Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and other allies of the president — he would have made for a compelling accuser.

But later in the day, his conclusion was supported by two witnesses — former special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker and former National Security Council staffer and longtime GOP Hill aide Tim Morrison — who said that it was not "appropriate" for a president to ask a foreign leader to investigate an American citizen, particularly one, former Vice President Joe Biden, who is a political rival of the president.

Army Providing Security for Vindman During Probe

WASHINGTON -- A U.S. official says the Army and local law enforcement are providing security for the officer who is testifying Tuesday during the House impeachment hearing.

The official says that the Army did a security assessment in order to make sure that Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman and his family are secure, so the officer didn’t have to worry about that as the proceedings go on.

Oh good.

Then you've got your next impeachment hearing already figured out after this one fails.

When does season 2 of this reality show begin?

EDITED TO ADD:

I can't help but think that any business about Trump added to the story about a pentagon contract with either Amazon or Microsoft is just a means of deflecting the abject terror anybody who gives a shit about privacy should feel when those words are used together in a sentence.

Democrats used to fight against things like that before they got TDS.

I know Texas white racists who do NOT think they are racist. When I ask them, in the blunt language they will understand, "Why do you hire no niggers?" they answer with something like: "there is always a better white man," then they launch into a tirade against Obama as one of the worst presidents in history (and Trump undoing the damage, ha-ha-ha!, in his own way). "Oh, no, I'm not racist. I'm just telling it like it is," is the way they think. There is an article called "Bad Thinkers". https://getpocket.com/explore/item/bad-thinkers

"Bad Thinkers" is not about racism. It is a philosophy article about belief and how that relates to intellectual character. Those Texas white racists? Sadly, they are the gullible who rarely are aware they are gullible and the closed-minded who don’t believe they are closed-minded.

"The only hope of overcoming self-ignorance in such cases is to accept that other people – your co-workers, your spouse, your friends – probably know your intellectual character better than you do. But even that won’t necessarily help. After all, it might be that refusing to listen to what other people say about you is one of your intellectual character traits. Some defects are incurable." I laughed out loud at "incurable".

Ha-ha-ha! at you, little 6ix. You voted for Trump and that man has the most powerfully magnetized moral compass needle in history. Except the polarity might be backwards, switching North for South. That needs an example:

"Trump grants clemency to troops in three controversial war crimes cases"

One more example of Trump's defective moral compass:
"The Trump administration on Thursday reversed a series of chemical safety regulations created in response to a 2013 explosion in West, Texas that killed 15, injured more than 200 and flattened much of the farming community south of Dallas."

Many wonderful people believed it was totally unfair that Lt. William Calley should be the only soldier imprisoned for the murders of 504 civilians. Brave and compassionate Richard Nixon listened to those people, then pardoned Lt. Calley. Same as with Trump, Nixon's moral compass was working well, was it not?

With that much certainty, you are setting yourself up for a rude awakening. I'd put the probability at 50%, but I win either way: I keep taking a dump truck load of tax money to the bank because the Republicans in the Senate will filibuster the repeal of Trump's "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017".

It is NOT a windfall, which implies some unusual circumstance. These loads of money are delivered regularly to me and Trump. Oh well.

You think the Army will let one of theirs get snuffed out by some random idiot looking to appease Trump?

Epstein may well have been a murder/hit job to keep his secrets secret. This wasn't someone within the prison system looking to off him. This, IMHO, was a hit job by those who were in his little black book.

But stranger things have happened.

Trump tried to use taxpayer dollars as leverage to get a foreign leader to hurt a political rival. The hours of testimony were best summed up by British-born Russia expert Fiona Hill, who said Thursday that the President replaced national security foreign policy with a "domestic political errand" -- a move that has left the US exposed to further Russian interference in its democratic process.

There have been 12 public witnesses. Here's the key element each one offered:

1. Bill Taylor, the top official at the US Embassy in Ukraine, brought the accusations to life as he described how he came to realize over the summer that Ukrainians were being pressured to announce investigations that involved baseless allegations of Ukrainian influence in 2016 and, separately, Burisma, the company that employed Hunter Biden. He put his concerns in writing.

2. George Kent, the top official for Eurasia policy at the State Department, talked about how Trump's decision to deputize his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani as his policy proxy amounted to an end run around the State Department and led to the smear campaign against now-former Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch.

3. Marie Yovanovitch talked about how Giuliani spread conspiracy theories at a time when the new Ukrainian government headed by Volodymyr Zelensky needed support from the US -- and how intimidated she felt.

4. Alexander Vindman talked about hearing Trump pressure Zelensky and immediately raising concerns. He talked about how those concerns went nowhere even though they built on previous concerns he had raised after a confrontational meeting with Gordon Sondland at the White House.

5. Jennifer Williams, who was also on the July 25 call, confirmed she thought it was unusual and more political than a call between the President and another world leader would normally be.

6. Kurt Volker, the former special envoy for Ukraine, said he didn't realize that Trump's request that Burisma be investigated was the same as investigating the Bidens until he read the transcript of the July 25 call when it was released in September. If he had known, he would have raised his own objections, he said.

7. Tim Morrison, who succeeded Hill as the White House's Russia expert, didn't see a problem with the call, but he knew it would be a problem if it became public. He was right. He knew investigating Burisma was code for investigating the Bidens because he Googled it.

8. Gordon Sondland, the US ambassador to the EU and a Trump donor, said yes, there was quid pro quo and that everyone at the top of the Trump administration was "in the know." He also said if he'd known that investigating the Bidens was the same as investigating Burisma, he would have raised his own concerns.

9. Cooper, a Pentagon official, talked about how freezing the Ukraine aid confused and alarmed Defense officials in mid-July and also how Ukrainians may have known the aid was frozen by the time Trump talked to Zelensky on the phone.

10. David Hale, a top State Department official, said Yovanovitch was a good ambassador and that what happened to her was wrong.

11. Fiona Hill, the former Russia expert at the White House, distilled the whole thing into what it was -- a domestic political errand rather than a genuine foreign policy. And she deconstructed Trump's fiction that Ukraine was out to get him in 2016.

12. David Holmes, the Ukraine embassy official, tied Trump directly to the desire for investigations.

Democrats were only able to present half the story. The White House made the decision not to cooperate, so we haven't seen key documents and we haven't heard key testimony. We likely won't hear Trump's side until or unless Trump is impeached and this moves to a full trial in the Senate.
Here are some people we should probably hear from but who aren't talking: More at www.cnn.com/2019/11/23/politics/impeachment-watch-november-22/index.ht

Epstein may well have been a murder/hit job to keep his secrets secret. This wasn't someone within the prison system looking to off him. This, IMHO, was a hit job by those who were in his little black book.

But stranger things have happened.

Awesome. I'm glad you took the time to explain it and I accept your Apples to Oranges statement.

I think you and I probably agree on a lot more than you suspect we do.

Giuliani associate willing to testify Nunes met with ex-Ukrainian official, attorney says

The attorney for an indicted associate of President Donald Trump's personal lawyer says his client is willing to tell Congress that Rep. Devin Nunes, R-California, met with Ukraine's former top prosecutor about investigating the activities of Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

An impeachment inquiry is being conducted over allegations Trump held up aid to Ukraine to encourage its leaders to launch an investigation into Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, who worked as an energy executive in that country. As vice president, Joe Biden joined a chorus of global pressure for Ukraine to fire then-state prosecutor Victor Shokin.

My question is, why talk about it now?

Why not just wait until it happens next week and make the news story about it then?

Trump supporters may be consuming the President's permanent attitude of "let's shake things up" with relish but the rest of us are choking a bit on the diet of constant crises that radiate from the White House. The present moment, when an impeachment inquiry promises political drama but is almost guaranteed to die in the Senate, may be a case in point. We cannot help watching, but our regular consumption of the details of a lascivious man risks eroding our own moral standards. The book provides still more; it outlines Trump's petty belittling of others, his self-important grandiosity. In cabinet meetings, says Anonymous, Trump likes to take a vote on whether or not he should fire this or that official. On trade, Anonymous quotes him as saying, "Nobody knows more about trade than me." On taxes: "Nobody knows more about taxes than me." On ISIS: "I know more about ISIS than the Generals do."

An apt analogy to it all is presented by another book, also published anonymously exactly 201 years before "A Warning." Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" features a scientist named Victor Frankenstein who creates a monster. Contrary to popular belief, it is the scientist and not the monster who is named Frankenstein. The terror of the book is not the overt details of the monster, but the scientist's own horror at the monstrosity he has created.

So it is with "A Warning." It isn't possible to read through it without considering Trump as the monster created collectively by a largely disinterested voting public, fed and fattened on the choreographed cruelties of reality television, and too rich and insulated to care about the consequences of even its own wars. It is a dismal picture.

Sometimes "we" respond, or comment, without thinking things through. I'm a prime example of that, but I've learned to take a step back, study the situation, then respond.

Now, I'm no saint, but sometimes my judgement is a bit weak, and so, I blurt out something from a "knee-jerk" point of view. Then I have to go back eventually and restate my opinion. I'm learning Six, I'm learning.

You're more open minded than most. I'd like to think that we both are.

It's impossible to have a conversation with somebody who honestly believes that Epstein killed himself. They have become a part of the narrative themselves.

Since it's impossible for me to go around putting mirrors underneath people's noses in the RWED, this topic is just about the best substitute for it.

Happy to know that you're not an NPC buddy.

Noam Chomsky Calls Trump and Republican Allies "Criminally Insane".

https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/cross-check/noam-chomsky-calls-tr
ump-and-republican-allies-criminally-insane
/

Q: Why did you recently call the Republican Party “the most dangerous organization in world history”?

Noam Chomsky’s answer: Take its leader, who recently applied to the government of Ireland for a permit to build a huge wall to protect his golf course, appealing to the threat of global warming, while at the same time he withdrew from international efforts to address the grim threat and is using every means at his disposal to accelerate it. Or take his colleagues, the participants in the 2016 Republican primaries. Without exception, they either denied that what is happening is happening – though any ignorance is self-induced – or said maybe it is but we shouldn’t do anything about it. The moral depths were reached by the respected “adult in the room,” Ohio governor John Kasich, who agreed that it is happening but added that “we are going to burn [coal] in Ohio and we are not going to apologize for it.” Or take a recent publication of Trump’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a detailed study recommending an end to regulations on emissions. It presented a rational argument: extrapolating current trends, by the end of the century we’ll be over the cliff and automotive emissions don’t contribute very much to the catastrophe – the assumption being that everyone is as criminally insane as we are and won’t try to avoid the crisis. In brief, let’s rob while the planet burns, putting poor Nero in the shadows.

This surely qualifies as a contender for the most evil document in history.

There have been many monsters in the past, but it would be hard to find one who was dedicated to undermining the prospects for organized human society, not in the distant future -- in order to put a few more dollars in overstuffed pockets.

And it doesn’t end there. The same can be said about the major banks that are increasing investments in fossil fuels, knowing very well what they are doing. Or, for that matter, the regular articles in the major media and business press reporting US success in rapidly increasing oil and gas production, with commentary on energy independence, sometimes local environmental effects, but regularly without a phrase on the impact on global warming – a truly existential threat. Same in the election campaign. Not a word about the issue that is merely the most crucial one in human history.

Hardly a day passes without new information about the severity of the threat. As I’m writing, a new study appeared in Nature showing that retention of heat in the oceans has been greatly underestimated, meaning that the total carbon budget is much less than had been assumed in the recent, and sufficiently ominous, IPCC report. The study calculates that maximum emissions would have to be reduced by 25% to avoid warming of 2 degrees (C), well above the danger point. At the same time polls show that -- doubtless influenced by their leaders who they trust more than the evil media -- half of Republicans deny that global warming is even taking place, and of the rest, almost half reject any human responsibility. Words fail.

Q: Wasn’t Richard Nixon worse than Donald Trump?

Noam Chomsky’s answer: Nixon had a mixed record. In some respects, he was the last liberal president: OSHA and EPA for example. On the other hand, he committed terrible crimes. Arguably the worst was the bombing of rural Cambodia, a proposed article of impeachment but voted down though it was incomparably more important than the others. And the article was much too weak, focusing on the secrecy. There has been little attention to the orders that Nixon delivered, relayed to the Pentagon by his faithful servant Henry Kissinger: “A massive bombing campaign in Cambodia. Anything that flies on anything that moves.” It is not easy to find comparable orders for genocide in the archival record. But all of Nixon’s crimes pale in comparison with the decision to race towards the precipice of environmental catastrophe.

6ix, you and 1kiki and Signym, since you turned Trump loose on the world, even if your vote made no difference because of the electoral college, are lumped in with Trump's criminally insane allies, even if you may, or may not, think climate change is real, even if there are other points you disagree with Trump, because he was obviously insane for decades. And he didn't get less crazy after his inauguration. He got worse, yet you continue to defend him. Every day he opens his mouth or tweets, he is obviously insane, yet it doesn't make you squirm at what you did or what you continue to do.
