People listen to what leaders say, even when what they say is obviously stupid. This is especially the case during a pandemic, when no cure is in sight and public anxiety is high. Some Americans heeded Trump’s advice on drinking cleaning agents to keep the virus at bay. Trump has failed America on multiple fronts during the pandemic, whether it is by denying funds for treatment, opening up workplaces and schools too soon or by simply setting a bad example by not wearing a mask. The US has recorded nearly 7.5 million cases and over 210,000 deaths so far on account of Covid-19. Trump cannot escape responsibility for the situation that America finds itself in.

Soon after testing positive, Trump said that he had “learned” more about the disease and understood it better. It triggered a flicker of hope that the illness would knock some sense into his head, that he would admit to having invited the infection by not wearing a mask. Instead of calling on Americans to follow protocols to prevent the pandemic’s spread, Trump broke every protocol to perform a political stunt on Sunday. Clearly, Trump is incapable of responsible conduct.

He found out my name, he found out my children’s names, they followed me in cars, they posted pictures of me on various sites … it terrified me.

Miller was compelled to get a restraining order against him.

In speeches before the Capitol Riot, Steve Bannon evoked the beaches of Normandy. Michael Flynn drew comparisons to Civil War battlefields and spoke of Americans who died for their country. Roger Stone called it a struggle "between the godly and the godless, between good and evil." Rudy Giuliani called for "trial by combat." Ali Alexander said it would be a "knife fight."

While a lot of attention has been paid to the President's words, there's been less focus on the fiery rhetoric of his most high-profile supporters, supporters who Trump could have told, since he was there at the speeches, to shut up rather than whip up an angry mob.

Trump and his most visible allies bear a great deal of responsibility for stoking the flames that led to the January 6 uprising.

Otero County, N.M., Commissioner Couy Griffin was arrested Sunday for illegally entering the Capitol on Jan. 6. Griffin, the head of a group called Cowboys for Trump, claims he got caught up with the crowd and didn’t actually enter the building, but the affidavit says video on his personal Facebook page showed him in restricted areas.

Griffin also pledged to return to Washington with guns for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration Wednesday, and he alluded to the prospect of violence and another incursion into the offices of lawmakers. According to the affidavit, he said in a video posted after the Jan. 6 riot:

“… We could have a 2nd Amendment rally on those same steps that we had that rally yesterday. You know, and if we do, then it’s gonna be a sad day, because there’s gonna be blood running out of that building. But at the end of the day, you mark my word, we will plant our flag on the desk of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and Donald J. Trump if it boils down to it.”

At last count, Donald Trump is the 100% owner of over 500 companies. Most of these companies exist just to move money between accounts, minimizing Trump’s taxes and maximizing the confusion for anyone trying to make any sense out of his finances. It now appears that Trump took this expertise to his campaign, where a number of campaign aides helped to shuffle dark money from shell companies right into the supposedly independent organizations that organized events leading up to the Jan. 6 insurgency.

Though the permit for the “Stop the steal” rally was supposedly given to the group Women for America First, and the whole thing was supposed to be separate from Trump’s campaign, the Associated Press reported back on Jan. 17 that an attachment to that rally listed a number of people as staff members of that organization who had—just weeks before—been paid directly by the Trump 2020 campaign.

Now OpenSecrets.org has provided a more detailed look at the web of dark money and shell companies that Trump used to fund his “wild” event while pretending it wasn’t his campaign behind the event.

For anyone tuning in that awful Wednesday morning, it was hard to differentiate the Stop the Steal rally from any of the other rallies that had marked Trump’s campaign from the beginning. Not only was Trump coming to speak at the close of events, everything from the signs to the music (almost all of it played over the objection of the artists) seemed like another stop on a campaign that simply failed to halt when the election was over.

But of course, protesting the counting of electoral votes over two months after the election is not the kind of event that is generally sanctioned for a campaign operating under FEC regulations. So they outsourced it. Sort of.

Trump’s campaign paid out over $2.7 million to the list of individuals and firms that were officially on the hook for the Jan. 6 rally. That includes at least half a dozen people who had previously collected six-figure incomes from the Trump campaign. At the top of that list: Megan Powers. Powers was listed as one of two operations managers for Women for America First in the permit for the Jan. 6 event. However, she was also director of operations for the Trump 2020 campaign, a role that netted her $290,000 in pay.

As OpenSecrets makes clear, even the money that flowed to people who miraculously left the Trump campaign just in time to host the rally doesn’t represent the full extent of the campaign’s involvement. Undisclosed to the FEC were a set of transactions where money was moved through shell companies, making it nearly impossible to trace all the funds that flowed out of campaign coffers, or where that money ended up.
