For several years there’s been a kind of competition on the right to come up with a coherent intellectual or ideological framework to support Trump’s presidency. Every single one that comes out of the clouds of theory to get close to the reality on the ground has crashed. He’s a nationalist who puts America first but says we’ll await Saudi Arabia’s say-so on a military strike against Iran. He says he wants free trade but also thinks tariffs are good.

Just this week, the same people who insisted that Trump would never collude with a foreign nation for his political interest are now defending collusion with a foreign nation for his political interest. The people who turn crimson with rage when you point out Trump’s decades of corrupt business practices now insist his only interest in the Bidens is his concern about corruption. They say it’s outrageous that Biden’s son sat on the board of a Ukrainian company when Biden was vice president, but they also say it’s fine to have a daughter and son-in-law duo running vast swaths of foreign and domestic policy while also making a fortune from their business interests around the world. Enemies are sinful or decadent when they lie or cheat on their wives, but who are you to judge Comrade Trump?

There’s no halfway defensible ideological, intellectual or moral standard that Trump doesn’t violate, often routinely. A cult of personality that replies “Trump’s right” or “his enemies are worse” before the question is even asked is the only place to hide.

Oh. And BTW... about Warren.

She just didn't double dip for the primary. She had a lot of donations from big donors left over from her senate bid that she rolled over into her presidential bid.

No new big donations for the primary, but a lot of old ones.

So her entire campaign was, in fact, kicked off by big donors.

Bernie might be a crazy old man and a socialist at heart, but at least he's not lying about anything. Hope his heart surgery went well.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

EDITED TO ADD:

Before somebody claims I'm not citing something, or I'm listening to fake news, here's something that is publicly available to everybody to do your own research, as to not have to rely on the Legacy Media lying to you one way or the other about it...

ELIZABETH FOR MA, INC WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 01/02/2019 $7,000,000.00
ELIZABETH FOR MA, INC WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 03/29/2019 $3,415,000.00
ELIZABETH FOR MA, INC WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 02/02/2019 $105,000.00
BULLY PULPIT WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY DC 02/27/2019 $35,000.00
WEWORK COMPANIES INC. WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY NY 02/26/2019 $10,425.00
WARREN, ELIZABETH WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 02/01/2019 $4,584.54
WEWORK COMPANIES INC. WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY NY 04/10/2019 $4,337.50
ACTBLUE WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 04/30/2019 $3,000.00
MORROW, PATRICK WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 04/30/2019 $3,000.00

This is a list of the highest donations all the way through the individual capped donations of $2,800.00 which are not being argued here.

So, on record so far besides whatever WEWORK COMPANIES INC., BULLY PULPIT and ACTBLUE WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. AND MORROW PATRIC WARREN FOR PRESIDENT INC. are, she's not technically lying about any new money for big donors coming in for the primary.

What she isn't telling you (lying by omission) is the fact that she started her primary bid with a grand total of $10,520,000 of campaign funds that she rolled over from her senate bid.

My point being that Warren is a boldfaced liar.

She's still bought and paid for by big donors. She was in 2018, and they weren't going to forget the money they had previously given her even if she wasn't going to take a bunch of corporate money for 2020 for the general, which she fully admits that she will, making the point almost completely moot.

We know they all take money. Everybody. On both sides. It's a gross bastardization of the Democratic Process.

But Warren is the only one up there that's lying about it.

Do you argue that fact?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Why is the IRS audit of Trump a joke?

Congress asked the IRS to report on why it audits the poor more than the affluent. Its response is that it doesn’t have enough money and people to audit the wealthy properly. So it’s not going to.

Oh, and it is not the Democrats but the Republicans who are 100% responsible for the IRS not being able to audit Trump properly.

The IRS audits the working poor at about the same rate as the wealthiest 1%. Now, in response to questions from a U.S. senator, the IRS has acknowledged that’s true but professes it can’t change anything unless it is given more money.

ProPublica reported the disproportionate audit focus on lower-income families in April. Lawmakers confronted IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig about the emphasis, citing our stories, and Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., asked Rettig for a plan to fix the imbalance. Rettig readily agreed.

Last month, Rettig replied with a report, but it said the IRS has no plan and won’t have one until Congress agrees to restore the funding it slashed from the agency over the past nine years — something lawmakers have shown little inclination to do.

On the one hand, the IRS said, auditing poor taxpayers is a lot easier: The agency uses relatively low-level employees to audit returns for low-income taxpayers who claim the earned income tax credit. The audits — of which there were about 380,000 last year, accounting for 39% of the total the IRS conducted — are done by mail and don’t take too much staff time, either. They are “the most efficient use of available IRS examination resources,” Rettig’s report says.

On the other hand, auditing the rich is hard. It takes senior auditors hours upon hours to complete an exam. What’s more, the letter says, “the rate of attrition is significantly higher among these more experienced examiners.” As a result, the budget cuts have hit this part of the IRS particularly hard.

For now, the IRS says, while it agrees auditing more wealthy taxpayers would be a good idea, without adequate funding there’s nothing it can do. “Congress must fund and the IRS must hire and train appropriate numbers of [auditors] to have appropriately balanced coverage across all income levels,” the report said.

Since 2011, Republicans in Congress have driven cuts to the IRS enforcement budget; it’s more than a quarter lower than its 2010 level, adjusting for inflation.

Recently, bipartisan support has emerged in both the House and Senate for increasing enforcement spending, but the proposals on the table are relatively modest and would not restore the budget to pre-cut levels. However, even a proposed small increase might not come to pass, because it’s unclear whether Congress will actually pass any appropriations bills this year.

In response to Rettig’s letter, Wyden agreed in a statement that the IRS needs more money, “but that does not eliminate the need for the agency to begin reversing the alarming trend of plummeting audit rates of the wealthy within its current budget.”

Thanks for the standard Russian trolling.

Convincing voters that both sides are equally corrupt causes political chaos, exactly what Russia wants, and it doesn't even need to go to war or get its troops killed if they can do their fighting from their keyboards located east of Moscow.

And the Republicans I know are certainly good at throwing around false accusations about Democrats. From personal experience I know Republicans are prone to gossip and slander. But I've made it pretty clear I don't like certain people and the funny thing about that dislike is that the people I dislike and can't trust and are crooks in their real lives, far away from politics, are also the same people who vote for Trump.

I think somebody should do a study of how people vote compared to how they secretively live their actual day-to-day lives and see which direction the causality runs. Does secretly being an untrustworthy and hypocritical tax-cheater make you vote for Trump? Or is it the other way around? It is very difficult to collect data. Yes, I have surreptitiously copied people's hard drives to discover who they really are. But the first time was a computer my father-in-law gave me in 1990, which he did not properly erase. It was very enlightening to give his tax returns over to a forensic accountant and see how he cheated. My opinion of Republican voters began changing.

Every time I collect more data surreptitiously from a target it reaffirms what I learned that first time. Maybe I should publish a academic paper? But there would be trouble for me from all those crooked Trump voters I know if I put my name on the paper. What is really funny is how the Democrats are pathologically honest. That does not work in their favor when their Trump voting competitors habitually cheat on taxes.

Later I realize that Trump's tax returns would be a treasure for a scholarly paper on voter behavior. He is the Ultimate-Trump-Voter. If my experience counts, he'd be the most extreme tax cheater in the Universe. "Tax Fraud By The Numbers: The Trump Timeline Updated: Oct. 6, 2019"

That is why I think Trump, and GOP politicians in general, should be tax audited by an independent agency beyond political control. It no longer becomes about differences in opinions on illegal aliens and trade and civil rights and religion. You know, the whole gamut of things Republicans disagree with Democrats on. It comes down to a number and accountants presenting politicians with a bill for back taxes. I am fairly sure that most, but not all, Trump voters would be angry at Trump and other GOP politicians who cheated on taxes. And I am positive that the GOP politicians cheat on their taxes, except for Mitt Romney.

While I am talking political fantasy, I might as well mention tax auditing Federal judges, including the Supreme Court. I think that would ruin the careers of most GOP judges. "Trump’s Sister Retires Rather Than Face Ethics Probe" It was about her tax cheating.

". . . Trump's sister participated in a decades-long multimillion-dollar tax fraud. That should be an impeachable offense. She gets her full salary. I think it’s appalling that we’re continuing to pay this criminal and that she now has completely avoided consequence. It’s ridiculous.”

Thank you for mentioning this tactic. Gary Kasparov (Russian troll insults in 3... 2... 1... ), pointed out this tactic back in 2016. As a Russian he's lived through it and continues to see it at work not just in the US - he knows first hand in other words.

Also, nice to see Susan Rice mention it. "Get us fighting each other is their tactic. They don't have to fire a shot to bring us down." I'm less optimistic about her solution, "we have to vote," and you could almost see Maddow flinch when she suggested it. "That's it? That's not enough!"

I never really thought much of Rice or much about her - this interview paints her in a more positive light imho (cue derisive comments in 3... 2... 1...):

Whatever, this bickering and division is the point, even here.

That Independent Agency to check for tax cheating of politicians and judges could remove the names from each tax return before sending the return out to forensic auditors. The auditors would know only the numbers, not the political party, of who they are auditing. It would be like science, a double-blind experiment to see who has the disease of crookedness and who does not.

Trump has all the signs of crookedness: promises about his tax returns that are not kept; passing tax bills that benefit him; going to extreme litigation to keep his returns a secret; actually being caught cheating in the distant past when calculating the inheritance tax on his parent's estate. The main thing missing is Trump's most recent tax returns, the ones from his White House years and the years on the campaign trail.

ALL politicians should be tax audited by an independent agency beyond political control.

The only problem is, show me a single institution that is without bias, or free from outside monetary influences that could change the way they operate.

I look at the news media and I don't see a single one.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

So, with the names redacted, do you suppose that the independent organization wouldn't crack the case when "Trump University" or "The Clinton Foundation" pops up?

The difference between Nixon and Trump is Fox News

Nixon needed a Fox News, and he knew it. When he won the presidency in 1968, he was not in a strong position. He’d led the popular vote by less than 1 percent, Democrats held both houses of Congress, and Nixon was convinced that the press corps was against him. He believed two things were necessary to fully exercise the powers of his new office: a strong, loyal Republican Party and a pro-Nixon media.

Getting the party on his side wasn’t hard. Nixon had earned a reputation as a party man throughout the 1960s. After losing his bid for president in 1960 and California governor in 1962, he went back out on the campaign trail in 1964 and 1966, stumping for every Republican who would have him. He did the same as president — with one exception. In 1970, despite angling to support Republican candidates across the country, he turned on New York’s Republican Sen. Charles Goodell (father of NFL owner Roger Goodell). He instead threw his support instead behind James Buckley, who ran as a member of the Conservative Party and who ultimately unseated Goodell.

Goodell’s sin? Speaking out against the Vietnam War. Nixon wanted Republicans in office, but they had to be loyal.

The other thing Nixon wanted was his own media outlet. Believing most mainstream outlets were in the tank for the Democrats, he was keenly interested in developing an alternative Republican news source. His administration had explored the idea of GOP-TV with future Fox News founder Roger Ailes, who at the time was a political media consultant. GOP-TV would create pro-administration segments and mail them out to local outlets across the country (a model that was more like Sinclair Broadcasting’s than Fox News’s). At the same time, conservative activists were also developing a scheme for a corporate takeover of CBS, hoping to transform it into a right-wing network.

Neither of those projects worked, and as the Watergate crisis mounted, Nixon was in a precarious position. Yes, he had won reelection in a historic landslide. But his propaganda machine never had much power.

Conservative media, such as it was, aggressively supported Nixon throughout the crisis, but it was simply not powerful enough to reshape the emerging consensus around administration wrongdoing or to keep Republican officeholders in line. Outlets like National Review stood by Nixon’s side, spinning every possible defense against impeachment, but they made very little impact. The dam broke; Republicans jumped ship; Nixon’s presidency ran aground.

At the beginning of his impeachment inquiry, Trump is in a very different place. He has a powerful propaganda system and a devoted Republican Party, from the base to the leaders in Congress.

The major driver of that devotion is not Trump but Fox, which has spent two decades mediating the desires of the base and disciplining the actions of the party.

I could make tax auditing of politicians workable, but I am not gonna be put in charge, am I? The tax auditing should only be done by non-American citizens, people who are neither Democrat nor Republican but people who have good reasons to dislike Americans. Those kind of people would really dig deep to find the dirt on politicians without showing favoritism to either side. But Congress won't allow that, will it? Congress gets itchy thinking about Japanese cars. Congress would be completely allergic to Japanese tax auditors going through Congressional tax returns, looking for cheating. Maybe Congress would allow Canadian accountants to do the tax auditing? No, not gonna happen, either. But if it ever did, guys like Trump, who can't show that he paid all his taxes, would not be elected.

If Trump’s Rage Brings ‘Civil War,’ Where Will the Military Stand?

Vietnam created a huge cultural divide in the U.S. that Richard Nixon successfully exploited, earning him one of the largest electoral victories in American history. But something more sinister may be afoot as we approach the 2020 election. Trump has done what Nixon ultimately could not do.

The extent of the visceral hatred much of the military feels for Democrats, the “deep state” and the “fake news media” is a new phenomenon. The belief that there is indeed a coup being orchestrated against President Trump is a weapon Trump has in his arsenal, depending how far down the road to authoritarianism he decides to go. But Trump would need to deeply fracture the military first, and that is something to watch for. Most members of the armed forces are honorable, patriotic Americans who would never take part in such a scheme, despite their support for Trump. But a significant portion just might.

Why not suggest Israeli forensic accountants auditing Trump's tax return? Because the Israeli government hated Obama and loves Trump is the reason not to. Nobody knows if Trump paid ALL his taxes. There is not one year, out of the last 70 years of him filing taxes where anybody knows if he paid all his taxes for that year. Why? Because he is being "audited", but as soon as the "audit" is complete, he will make his tax return available to the public, as he promised!

Well... who do you suggest?

Sorry, Second, but if human beings are doing it, whether they hate America or not, there is going to be bias. Period.

There is not a single outside entity that at least half the country would be displeased with auditing politicians taxes. And a large portion of people who love America and the Constitution, from both parties, are never going to be on board with your idea.

It's a complete non-starter.

The Congressional Budget Office projects a fiscal 2019 deficit of almost a trillion dollars — up by more than $300 billion from the deficit Trump inherited.

Never mind the clear demonstration that the G.O.P.’s Obama-era hyperventilating about deficits was completely hypocritical. The more important point is that $300 billion is a lot of money, and it should have been enough to buy Trump a lot of political gain. $28 billion went to bribe rural America to vote for him. Oh, wait, I don't mean a bribe, I mean "Assistance for Farmers Impacted by Unjustified Chinese Retaliation to Tariffs".

In other nations, other white nationalists trying to do what Trump is trying to do — subvert the rule of law and convert their nations from democracies on paper to one-party autocracies in practice — have solidified their grasp on power by delivering at least a bit on their populist promises. In Poland, for example, the Law and Justice party has increased social spending and is now promising a big rise in the minimum wage.

Trump’s domestic economic policy, however, has been standard Republican top-down class warfare. None of that $300 billion went for social benefits or even his continually promised, never-delivered infrastructure plan. Instead, it went mainly into tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy that have done little to boost investment.

At the same time, Trump has pursued his personal tariff obsession despite mounting evidence that it’s hurting growth — and likely to get worse as tariffs on consumer goods bite and the economy slows.

President Trump isn’t the first American leader to turn his back on foreign friends who were counting on U.S. assistance: President Dwight D. Eisenhower did it in Hungary in 1956; President John F. Kennedy in Cuba in 1961; and President Gerald Ford in South Vietnam in 1975. But no previous chief executive has ever sold out the United States’ allies as nonchalantly and unnecessarily as Trump has done with the Syrian Kurds.

At least with Eisenhower, Kennedy and Ford, there was a good reason they failed to come to the aid of freedom fighters: Doing so would have embroiled the United States in costly conflicts. Trump and his apologists would like to pretend that’s also the case today — that Trump pulled U.S. troops out of northern Syria to avoid a war with Turkey. But there is scant chance that Turkish troops would have invaded northern Syria if U.S. troops were standing in the way. That is why President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked Trump to move the U.S. forces — and Trump, for reasons that remain mysterious, obliged. (Trump himself admitted in 2015 that “I have a little conflict of interest” because of two Trump Towers in Istanbul.)

The consequences of the American pullout are proving to be every bit as catastrophic as most observers — and Trump’s own aides — had feared. On “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper said that ever since coming to office about two months ago, he had been urging the Turks not to invade Syria. “We cited all the reasons that are now playing out,” he said. “The biggest being the likely release of ISIS fighters from these camps and prisons, not just that we see a humanitarian crisis emerging.”

If Esper cited those reasons to the Turks, he surely cited them to Trump as well. But the president wasn’t listening, as usual. Now Kurds are being slaughtered, and Islamic State detainees are escaping. With chaos all around, Trump had no choice on Sunday but to order most U.S. troops to scuttle out of Syria in a humiliating defeat. Our forces are leaving so fast they could not take with them, as planned, some 60 “high value” Islamic State detainees — i.e., some of the worst terrorists on the planet.

I don't have to do a damn thing to protect myself because the GOP protects people like me from people like you by keeping the minimum wage at a minimum and by lowering my taxes. On the other hand, the Democrats don't protect me from higher wages and higher taxes. Maybe I should vote for Trump next time?

Oh... that's right. I woke up this morning and forgot entirely that you're rich.

Thanks for our daily reminder of how great you are.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

6ix, you are thinking small. As far as I know, you can't remember details from one day to the next, except your bitterness at how poorly you have it in life, something I see in nearly all Trump lovers. Trump voters who are rich don't love Trump. It is too obvious to them how dishonorable and greedy he is.

6ix, you have not been able to put what few details you remember to good use in building a prediction model of how the world works and people react in order to predict what will happen next. Knowing what is likely to be next gives you a huge advantage over people who can't, or won't, do it, people who live in the eternal now with no larger purpose than birds, pets, and bees have - Jayne Cobb, for a fictional example and Adam Baldwin for a real example. Today, Baldwin only has 172 bird tweets, because he keeps erasing older tweets and forgetting his past. The only thing he clearly remembers in detail is his bitterness at his enemies. Trump remembers his past. He has 45,200 tweets and he obviously does have a prediction model of how the world works and people react. Too bad about what he uses his model for.

Hunter Biden appears to have inadvertently done his country a great service: He lured Donald Trump into openly extorting a foreign country to investigate the son of a domestic political rival. It’s an important revelation that has launched an impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump and may help Democrats win back the White House. But is Joe Biden going to be the strongest Democratic contender in this conversation? Or will his ability to make the case be compromised, as every time he attacks Trump for soliciting foreign assistance, Trump will counter with allegations about why exactly Hunter Biden was being paid so much money by a Ukrainian natural gas giant?

Hunter Biden’s exploits also make it hard for Biden to launch what should be a broader, and damning, attack on Trump: that he’s compromised and corrupted the government through nepotism and self-dealing. Twitter is full of liberals mocking the hypocrisy of the Trump children for attacking Biden, but the money Hunter Biden made trading on the Biden name weakens Joe Biden’s ability to make the case against Trump’s nepotism and corruption, even though it’s clearly one of Trump’s core vulnerabilities.

Democrats are afraid to talk about Hunter Biden. Trump won’t be.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

It looks like the LATimes is supporting the 'moderate' democrats especially Buttigieg, which Jack predicted many weeks ago (and who has gotten the lions share of good MSM support and big donor $$).

But an opinion, featured on today's front-page, has some serious deficiencies - ie, no comparisons with facts.

Opinion: During Democratic debate, Warren sides with the cynics, Buttigieg is with the optimists

... the Democrats know that if they win the nomination, they’ll face the same set of voters that Trump will in November 2020, ... And some of those candidates are pushing the same emotional buttons Trump pushed in 2016 and continues to push today.

And what are those 'buttons'?
Quote:

... just as Trump argued that voters were being ignored or even abused by a powerful, shadowy force that controlled the government ... a number of Democrats are trotting out their own version of a powerful, shadowy force that’s harming ordinary Americans: corporations and wealthy individuals whose lobbyists and campaign donations have put the federal government on a leash.
Well, the big question then, is - is it true?
Quote:

Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) are the foremost exponents of this point of view, along with billionaire Tom Steyer ... (about) income inequality ... Sanders, Warren and Steyer went furthest by portraying corporations and wealthy individuals as actually controlling the levers of government, corrupting it and running roughshod over the population. This echoes Trump’s contention in the 2016 campaign ...
AHEM !!! is it true?
Quote:

Still, several of the more moderate Democrats are painting a decidedly less cynical and more hopeful picture for voters. Their argument, in essence, is that the system isn’t bad — its leader is.
So, was it true under Obama?
Quote:

It’s conventional wisdom in politics that people don’t want to vote for a buzzkill candidate, they want to vote for one with a hopeful message. Even Trump, with all his appeals to fear and distrust, still emphasized a hopeful vision of boom times to come. The issue for Democrats is whether their potential nominees are peddling a vision that’s so cynical about the present that it leaves no room for optimism about the future.
But is the message true?

And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?

The NYTimes is cautiously behind Buttigieg:

‘I Don’t Need Lessons From You on Courage’: Buttigieg Makes His Case

On the Democratic debate stage Tuesday night, Pete Buttigieg didn’t brag about his military service. But he did outflank his rivals.

And WaPo is damning Warren with faint praise:

Warren dominated debate, but rivals sought out her weaknesses
Some of the hits were driven by political desperation. Others stemmed from genuine frustration.

For the first time, workers are paying a higher tax rate than investors and owners. Praise Trump!

The proximate cause of the shift was Trump’s 2017 tax cut, which dramatically slashed taxes on corporate profits and estates.

Most Americans have to work to earn a living. But the rich are different: They get most of their income not from labor but from what they own — companies, stocks, real estate and the like.

These income-generating assets are what economists call capital. And because capital is heavily concentrated among the rich, the U.S. government taxed earnings derived from capital at a higher rate than earnings made through labor for the entirety of the 20th century.

But that’s no longer the case, according to economists Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman of the University of California at Berkeley. In their new book, “The Triumph of Injustice,” they present data showing that in 2018, labor income was taxed at a higher rate than capital income for the first time in modern U.S. history.

The proximate cause of the shift was the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), which dramatically slashed taxes on corporate profits and on estates — both forms of capital income — according to their analysis. But Saez and Zucman also note that the trend has been decades in the making, driven in large part by the same forces that have pushed billionaires’ tax rates below those of the working class.

“From the 1940s to the 1980s, the average tax rate on capital exceeded 40%, while labor paid less than 25%," they write. “Since its peak of the 1950s, however, the average capital tax rate has been cut by twenty percentage points. At the same time, labor taxation has risen more than ten points, driven by the upsurge in payroll taxes.”

Proponents of the corporate rate cut in the TCJA promised it would unleash new business investment. But the data so far shows “little reason to believe the TCJA substantially boosted investment to date,” as economist Jason Furman recently summarized for the American Enterprise Institute.

Saez and Zucman contend that, rather than boost investment in American workers, falling tax rates on capital simply have served to fatten the wallets of corporations and their shareholders. “Less capital taxation means that the wealthy — who derive most of their income from capital — can mechanically accumulate more. This feeds a snowball effect: wealth generates income, income that is easily saved at a high rate when capital taxes are low; this saving adds to the existing stock of wealth, which in turn generates more income, and so on.”

One piece of evidence supporting this argument is the recent surge in wealth inequality. “Since 1980,” Saez and Zucman write, “the top 1% and the bottom 90% have exchanged their slices of the total wealth pie: what the bottom 90% has lost, the top 1% has gained.”

Incidentally, Americans in the bottom 90 percent derive 85 percent of their income from labor, while those in the top 1 percent get more than half of their income from capital.

“To capital owners who have prospered,” Saez and Zucman write, “the tax system has given more. From workers whose wages have stagnated, it has taken more.”
