It seems Senator McConnell, usually careful not to rock the boat before the upcoming midterm elections, did not set out to tell the electorate that Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid cuts were high on the Republican agenda. It appeared to be a slip as he was caught off guard defending the Republican tax cut . . .

The Republican Party has always been associated with opposition to Social Security. Economic historian Max Skidmore shows that the final vote for Social Security was lopsided--only 2% of Democrats voted against it (because it wasn't generous enough) while 33% of Republicans voted against Social Security.

Historian Arthur Schlesinger (page 311) notes that the Republicans echoed corporate opposition to Social Security. A representative of the Illinois manufacturers testified that if Social Security was passed it would undermine America by “destroying initiative, discouraging thrift, and stifling individual responsibility.” In 1935, Republican congressman John Taber said Social Security “is designed to prevent business recovery, to enslave workers, and to prevent any possibility of the employers providing work for the people.”

In the 1970s the conservative Cato Institute made shrinking Social Security through privatization its primary objective and in 2005 George W. Bush tried to replace Social Security . . .

When Medicare was first being considered Senate Republican Robert Dole (then in the House) voted against it. Also in opposition to Medicare, in a famous 1964 speech, Ronald Reagan explained that his opposition to Social Security and Medicare is why he switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. He called Social Security “welfare” and said of the possible regret in not stopping the passage of Medicare: “One of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.”

When Vice President Mike Pence was in Congress he opposed passage of Medicare's Part D, the drug benefit, and complained that Bush's proposal to partially privatize Social Security was not enough; Pence proposed deeper cuts to the Social Security program than President Bush. . . .

Well, it certainly doesn't tell the SECONDRATE "you" anything, because there's an epic logic-fail going on with the SECONDRATE "you", most likely caused by an emotional glitch of self-hate projected on to others, plus a soupcon of PTSD. Until the SECONDRATE "you" fixes its emotional glitch, the logic unit will continue to bonk.- SIGNYM

The Mueller report is unequivocal in concluding that even if Trump is criminally innocent of obstruction, it is not for lack of trying. The main reason the investigation wasn’t completely thwarted was not that the president didn’t “endeavor” to thwart it — the definition of criminal obstruction — but rather that Trump’s subordinates refused to comply. -SECONDRATE

More logic-fail from SECONDRATE. And that's not an insult, that's a simple observation.

You may have noticed, SECONDRATE, that in this country we don't jail people for what they WANT to do, because that would be jailing people for thought-crime. We only jail people for what they have actually done.

And the reason why Mueller made such a pitch for impeachment (aside from the fact that he's a lying deep-state weasel who joined in on the Iraq WMD fiction as easily as he did on the RUSSIA!RUSSIA! fiction) is because he knows that impeachment is a POLITICAL process, not a legal one, and he was hoping that if Congress couldn't impeach Trump they would at least make political points from then until the election.

There are a lot of policy reasons to not like Trump. There are a lot of policy reasons to not vote Republican.

Democrats should be focusing on THOSE, not on RUSSIA!RUSSIA! or Trump's taxes or "obstruction of justice" which are all just empty (and in fact counterproductive) virtue-signalling.

If the Dems keep at it and nothing else changes, Trump has a great chance of winning the next election.

When will the Dems come up with something other than Trump Derangement Syndrome?

Ok, this thread has gone on long enough.

The people here suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome should, at SOME point, absorb the reality that - just like there was NO collusion* with Russia - IMPEACHMENT IS A DEAD ISSUE. It'll never happen, despite the endless digging into the various pretexts and hoped-for causes ... from Trump taxes to so-called "obstruction" ... impeachment is an itch that'll NEVER be scratched,

So, why are we still talking about this?

Turn your thoughts to more productive uses, something BESIDES trying to rewrite history/ deny reality with an endless stream of words, because no matter how much you throw words at this board Trump isn't going to be impeached.

Here is a thread that deserves your attention:
my platform as presidential candidate - what's yours
http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=63022
Maybe if we bang our heads together we can come up with a series of potential policy options ... Medicare for all or universal basic income? How to save Social Security? How to reduce greenhouse gases? How much would scaling bakc our military options save us? ... that makes fiscal and economic sense.

It's very possible that the economy will implode and hand the Dems an easy win. It's also very possible that the economy will hang together just long enough to allow Trump a shot at victory.

Either way, there are a lot of people ... people BESIDES the dem base ... who are willing to vote for someone besides Trump ... and the Dems should make sure that their candidate is credible enough to attract these independent voters, which means they need to run on something BESIDES Trump Derangment Syndrome.

Let's sharpen our thoughts on who we might want to run, and why. There are 23 (more?) candidates running, so here's a thread on that topic, not too heavily traveled but with some interesting discussion, that should help us focus on what matters.

Dems, Dem-lites, and Independents: Who ya backing at this point and why?

When will the Dems come up with something other than Trump Derangement Syndrome?

I'll pick a policy issue: the exploding national debt. Voters don't understand a damn about it and they don't want to. When the debt was rising under Obama, the Republicans blamed Obama, not Bush's crash of 2008 for reducing tax receipts. When debt continues to rise under Trump, there is complete denial by the GOP that it has anything to do with the tax code being bent in favor of the wealthy. But what voters will understand is that Trump cheated on his taxes. First, the Democrats have to get their hands on his business records and tax returns, then calculate how much Trump underpaid.

For the Democrats to pay for their policy changes, wealthy people such as Trump and myself will have to pay for it. The tax collection system won't get revised under a Democratic President unless Democrats can firmly pound into the heads of voters that all wealthy people, and especially tax cheating Trump, are swindling the nation. Voters won't understand the arguments by economists, but there is a slim chance they will understand that Trump is a tax crook, if the Democrats can investigate his tax returns.

Signym, do you think a majority of voters will understand The World Bank's new report out on Inequality 2018, if Democrats talked about it? Not a chance. But it is possible to make them understand the GOP supports tax cheating Trump.
https://angrybearblog.com/2019/06/income-inequality-im-tooting-my-own-
horn.html

Go ahead and read all about Inequality. I did, but I'm a 1 Percenter. 99% of voters aren't and they aren't interesting in understanding how they are being screwed or who to vote for (D or R?) to fix it. Voting for a Democrat as President but leaving at least 41 GOP Senators means it won't be fixed. A huge number of GOP Senators will have to lose if there is a chance for the system to change for the better. No amount of talking by Democrats about inequality and tax policy will every make the voters understand, but catching a thief like Trump just might -- it is a very slim chance.

I will diagnose what is wrong with you and the typical Republican. You don't understand the difference between bad and worst because you're always looking for good and best. Pence is bad; Trump is worse; go with Pence and avoid the blunders of a senile, disorganized, old fool. Good and best are not available choices, but you can move toward better. Best would be to ditch the entire Republican party and all their Senators protecting Trump from impeachment and the consequences from his crappy behavior and general incompetence.

Wrong again. The Rock-The-Vote Demopcraps did the exact opposite, bringing a halt to businesses prospering and driving the economy, instead stifling the economy just like they had campaigned to do. They took office in Jan 2007, and started working on their very first Federal Budget - their very first one!! This was the FY 2008 Budget. And when their FY 2008 Budget went into effect in October 2007, that very month the economy stopped it's upward trajectory - the very same month!!! It must be coincidence, it cannot be anything else!! After they stuck their fingers into the recipe for economic growth, and the recipe was soured, then they blamed everybody else for the disaster they had created!!

It turns into a colossal struggle. I am wearing a pair of sturdy black patent-leather four-inch Barneys high heels, which puts my height around six-one, and I try to stomp his foot. I try to push him off with my one free hand — for some reason, I keep holding my purse with the other — and I finally get a knee up high enough to push him out and off and I turn, open the door, and run out of the dressing room.

The whole episode lasts no more than three minutes. I do not believe he ejaculates."

This episode hasn’t gotten an awful lot of attention. This is the first I’ve written about it, for example. Why? I don’t think it has anything to do with media outlets not taking rape allegations seriously. The real answer is almost worse: (a) everybody just assumes the story is true and (b) everybody knows that it will have no effect on either Trump’s fans or his Republican Party colleagues. Trump will issue a pro forma denial; nobody will take it seriously; and that will be that. Just like the other 15 times.

In response to the latest allegation that he engaged in a sexual assault, Donald Trump’s first line of defense is to claim that the victim is not his kind of woman — he doesn’t deny that he is this kind of man.

In reference to E. Jean Carroll, Trump says: “Number one, she’s not my type,” but he leaves open the possibility that any woman who is his type, might be the type of woman he would consider raping if she rejected his sexual advances.

Likewise, in refuting the allegations, his second line of defense is historical inaccuracy: “Number two, it never happened,” rather than asserting he would never act in such a way.

One could argue that it would be pointless for Trump to flatly assert that he is not a rapist, since it is a universally known and irrefutable fact that Trump is a liar.

But since we all know he’s a liar, whenever he says, “it never happened,” there’s all the more reason to suspect it did happen.

1kiki, it's almost like you are being paid by the word to defend Trump as his lawyer. His actual lawyers are making a case that there needs to be "proof" that foreigners are paying Trump. Trump's lawyers' position is that all foreigners doing business with Trump's companies are presumed to be getting Trump's services for free until proven different and Trump's lawyers aren't cooperating with showing how much Trump is being paid. In the case of Trump raping women, the lawyers' argument is that there needs to be proof Trump had an orgasm.

Trump loses bid to halt Democratic lawsuit over foreign payments.

The lawsuit against Trump accuses him of violating the so-called emoluments clause of the Constitution, which bans U.S. officials from accepting gifts or payments from foreign governments without congressional consent.

The judge issued a 48-page decision that rejected Trump’s argument that emoluments were limited essentially to bribes, calling that definition “unpersuasive and inconsistent.”

Sullivan said he agreed with the congressional Democrats who brought the case that the clause should be read more broadly as barring an official from taking any payment of any kind whatsoever from a foreign state without congressional approval.

The ruling allows the Democratic plaintiffs, led by Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and including members of the House of Representatives and Senate, to begin the so-called discovery phase of the case in which they will seek records from Trump’s real estate company.

1kiki, now you're off litigating evidence vs. proof. You really are a nutjob. Do you recall that Trump's lawyer is in prison for paying bribes to two women? Trump still denies he had sex with the women and there is no "proof" he did, other than the women saying Trump did have sex, but his lawyer remains in jail despite that. Trump says his lawyer lied about the women, the bribes, everything. Trump also said he is not a serial rapist, either, so he must be "innocent" because there is no "proof"/evidence, other than 16 women saying he raped them.

tml

Then there is Trump taking money from foreigners. He denied it happened. He says nothing can be "proved" and his lawyers won't turn over business records of the payments.

Then there are Trump's taxes. He denies he cheated, and says nobody can "prove" he did. But he won't turn over his tax records, unlike every President, Vice-President and all candidates. There are many reasons to think he did cheat and no reasons to believe him or his lawyers.

1kiki, the topic is unchanged: Trump is a liar. As President, Trump should make a convincing case that he is not cheating on his taxes, but he won't make the case, feeling only the need to say he isn't cheating. He feels no need to reveal his tax returns or business records to demonstrate his honesty. Even Nixon cooperated on his taxes. Congress discovered he owed taxes equal to 50% of Nixon's net-worth. Nixon willing paid. Trump is not willing.

As President, Trump needs to convince us that his businesses are not taking bribes from foreigners, but he can't be bothered to make that case, either. He says he is not being bribed, and he could produce his business records to prove it, but his lawyers fight that in court.

Then there is the money-laundering, but Trump thinks denying he did it is enough, despite that he could prove it, but only if he would try. He won't try.
http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/05/deutsche-flagged-trump-kushner-
for-money-laundering-report.html

Then there is the raping. Ask Trump for a DNA sample. You won't get one. Ask him about his lawyer paying women and his lawyer going to jail. Trump will call his lawyer a liar and Trump says he never had sex with those women. The women disagree.

In every case of possible crimes, Trump only gives you his word to defend himself. He won't give anybody the evidence that he is innocent despite his complete control of evidence. He won't share because he knows it shows he is guilty.

1kiki, stop taking Trump's word for his innocence and start demanding he prove it with all the evidence he has kept hidden about himself and his businesses and his taxes. He is not a private citizen. He needs to stop saying "Believe me" and start proving it. Since Trump won't start, I think it is because the evidence Trump controls proves he is guilty.

Wait.

I thought he was a rapist. That was the topic. Because, you know, he never denied he was that kind of man. (Does that mean you can count on his words to be true?)

No. WAIT. It's because someone looked at non-existent 'evidence' and decided out of thin air it must be true. And ... as I predicted ... you never DID come up with evidence AND you changed the subject!

There is correlation between being stupid and being poor. There is also a correlation between being a self-righteous Republican and being a bad employee deserving firing. It is unsurprising that Trump's bad behavior: his incompetence, his dishonesty, his laziness, his sexual harassment, etc. has been copied by Trump voters. These are the kind of things that will get you fired in the real world, but Trump has not been fired because he has tenure. He can't be fired.

This week there was a murder trial where the accused slashed, superficially, his own throat. The judge told jurors to ignore this outburst and not use it as evidence in the case. Likewise, Trump superficially slashing his own throat by accusing his White House Counsel, Don McGahn, of lying under oath to Mueller. Trump slashed again by claiming executive privilege and barring McGahn from testifying to Congress. Please ignore the weird verbal outbursts in public by Trump and the accused murderer. Don’t use the outbursts as evidence. Except it is evidence of guilt.

This week the Trump administration official in charge of diplomatic protocol will resign. Sean Lawler, State Department Chief of Protocol, believed his job in "Protocol" was to be an asshole to civil-service employees, which is against the written rules. Breaking the rules finally caught up with him. For some reason, such rules are not yet enforced when it is Trump.

Lawler, a fixture in the Oval office during dignitaries’ visits, was the president’s liaison to the diplomatic corps at the State Department. Lawler, who is in a position confirmed by the Senate and has the rank of ambassador, was scheduled to accompany the president to the G-20 on Friday and Saturday.

If Trump resigned now, same as Lawler and for the same reason, V.P. Mike Pence will more capably handle the G-20 than Trump will. It's a job, folks, and Trump can't learn how to do it because he's too proud to learn.
