The theme of lies — the destruction of truth by a regime devoted to self-preservation — pervades “Chernobyl” in a way that is wildly relevant to America in the age of birtherism, Sarah Sanders, and “very fine people” who are neo-Nazis.

“Chernobyl” can be considered the best political film of our times because it illuminates a core problem of the Trump era: the nonstop jackhammer of falsehoods that are drowning out what’s true. The risk is that Americans who are inundated with moral rubbish from the White House and Fox News may lose the will to care about the difference between right and wrong, echoing what happened in the Soviet Union. When everything becomes gray and sluggish, there is no battle worth fighting.

Revise that phrase to There's Fools EVERYWHERE!!!! Relative to the world's population, "Russians" are only a small percent, but "Fools" (or more politely "The Easily Fooled") are a very large percent, certainly over 50%. The saddest fact is that the "Fools" fatally believe they aren't fooled, that only they, with their good old-fashion common sense, know the truth, but when you look at their difficulties and struggles in life you know they are fooling themselves.

Fox News host Sean Hannity, who has done more than anybody (except perhaps Donald Trump himself) to push the narrative that Hillary Clinton should be locked up, now thinks such calls are something that only happens in “banana republics” — at least when they’re directed toward Trump.

For years, Hannity’s conspiratorial case for imprisoning Clinton has been a centerpiece of his shows; even after the 2016 election, he’s used that narrative to deflect from damaging revelations stemming from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference and the Trump campaign’s role in it. As recently as April, Hannity was characterizing Clinton’s email server as “a real threat to our safety and security.”

All of this, of course, has been about Hannity’s staunch support for Trump, not good-faith concerns about abuse of power and the rule of law. But if you need proof, Hannity provided it during his broadcast on Thursday.

On the heels of Politico reporting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told senior Democrats she’d like to see President Donald Trump “in prison” during a meeting earlier this week, Hannity suddenly changed his tune about whether it’s appropriate to prosecute prominent politicians.

Pelosi wants to dodge an impeachment inquiry to protect her marginal Democrats, who fear retribution in 2020 in swing districts.

Pelosi’s refusal to pursue impeachment — despite the imploring by over half of the House Judiciary Committee Democrats — seems firmly rooted in her party’s electoral vulnerability for 2020.

Democratic representatives who publicly endorsed impeachment proceedings, with one exception in New Jersey, all won with over 60 percent of the vote and all hail from reasonably safe Democratic districts. In contrast, those Democrats who narrowly won in 2018 and represent GOP-leaning districts, have almost uniformly chosen not to endorse impeachment.

Impeaching Trump is not what the Congress or the democrats need to be working on. They need to decide on a platform that will win people over, and put forth a candidate who people can really hope will change things for the better. Wait. Where did we hear that before?

Trump’s approval rating is 42.4%. Could the Democrats flip on climate change to make the 42.4% comfortable with the idea of voting for a Democrat as their Senator, not just for President? I think not. And until the percent of Senators who are Republican drops to 39% or less, the Federal government will continue to malfunction as the stubborn Trump supporting Senators continue their filibustering/roadblocking/gridlocking of Congress as they have done since 1979, when they first got more than 40 GOP Senators. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

The 51 GOP Senators will roadblock removing Trump by impeachment. Those 51 GOP Senators will roadblock any Democratic President. No Democratic platform will change the minds of those 51. No Democratic President has any chance until there are 39 or fewer GOP Senators and there is absolutely no imaginable platform with any arrangement of magical words from a Democratic President that can change the minds of GOP Senators.

Yup. It is a shame that Obama was such a bad president that he swung so many voters back the other way.

I do believe that if you look hard enough, you will find several posts of mine back in the day where I said that GWB was so bad that his administration singlehandedly ruined the GOP for at least a generation to come.

Not only did Obama's administration prove that wrong, but it was so bad that a reality TV star that drives you guys absolutely insane is going to get re-elected a year and a half from now.

Meh - What used to drive me insane was just how ignorant or indifferent or both most Americans are. We get the government we, as a collective, deserve. So we got this freak - makes perfect sense - stupid people are easier to scam. I say that in all objective seriousness.

Having said that... I agree that Trump is the front runner for 2020, even if I also think that just about any Dem running is a better human being and would be a better president (for me)... obviously that warm fuzzy "shit" doesn't matter toward who wins.
So here's a question: If Trump gets a second term, will republicans and Trump lovers and Trump TV still be talking about Obama and Clinton?

Trump's "no collusion" lie is finally falling apart — but will Americans actually notice?
Trump claims he read the Mueller report. He didn't. If he had, he'd know it's full of bad news for his presidency
https://www.salon.com/2019/06/18/trumps-no-collusion-lie-is-finally-fa
lling-apart-but-will-americans-actually-notice
/

Although the Mueller Report has been in the public domain for nearly two months, there’s still a ton of confusion and disinformation around it. The confusion is specifically due to two things: Very few voters have actually read it, and Donald Trump is delighted to exploit that fact. It doesn’t help that Robert Mueller has been more than a little cryptic about his findings — refusing to answer questions or to appear for congressional testimony to clear the air.

Consequently, the president and his Red Hat loyalists continue to repeat the “NO COLLUSION!' lie with very little push-back. The all-caps falsehood gains momentum every time Trump repeats it. Likewise, Bill Barr’s March 24 letter and his subsequent public remarks erroneously confirmed Trump’s lie before anyone, including Congress, was allowed to actually read the report.

The lies were thicker than Trump’s AquaNet during a must-see one-hour interview special with George Stephanopoulos, originally broadcast this past Sunday night. During an awkwardly staged conversation in “The Beast,” Trump’s presidential limousine, the president insisted to Stephanopoulos that Mueller literally reported “no collusion.” Predictably, this is a lie.

Even if Trump course-corrected and changed “no collusion” to “no conspiracy,” it wouldn’t hold much water either. Mueller writes on page 9: “... the evidence was not sufficient to charge that any member of the Trump Campaign conspired with representatives of the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 election.” Simply put: there was evidence of conspiracy but not enough evidence to seek a criminal indictment. Mueller added that Trump campaign officials lied to investigators, which “impaired the investigation of Russian election interference.” The lies and the cover-up, drawn from mob tactics, flummoxed Mueller’s work.

On page 9, Mueller also writes that “the investigation identified numerous links between individuals with ties to the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump Campaign.” These “links” are roughly more than 100 clandestine meetings between Trump officials and Russians listed and described in Mueller’s report — meetings nearly all of these officials repeatedly lied about.

Despite these findings in the report, when asked whether the meetings took place, Vice President Mike Pence told Fox News Sunday, “Of course not. Why would there be any contacts between the campaign?” Whoops.

“... the evidence was not sufficient to charge that any member of the Trump Campaign conspired with representatives of the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 election.”

While a sitting PRESIDENT can't be indicted, it appears Mueller was certainly OK with indicting everyone else, on anything and everything he could find. So the fact that NOBODY was indicted for 'collusion' with 'Russians' (some of whom were Ukrainian, and many of those 'contacts' happening far before the Trump campaign) definitively clears the campaign.

But the same logic ALSO applies to 'obstruction'. While Trump can't be indicted, certainly everyone else can. Yet NOBODY was indicted. What does that tell you?

Well, the rhetorical 'you'. Not the 'you' who post here.

And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?

Well, it certainly doesn't tell the SECONDRATE "you" anything, because there's an epic logic-fail going on with the SECONDRATE "you", most likely caused by an emotional glitch of self-hate projected on to others, plus a soupcon of PTSD. Until the SECONDRATE "you" fixes its emotional glitch, the logic unit will continue to bonk.

You know, every time you resort to personal attacks, you expose that you're out of facts and logic.

Try responding to the fact: ANYONE besides Trump could have been indicted for obstruction, the exact same way ANYONE could have been indicted for 'collusion'. But NOBODY was indicted for anything even remotely related to obstruction.

Why is that?

Find me that text in the report that made everyone else besides Trump off-limits for obstruction charges.

REAVERBOT never will, because REAVERBOT ALSO has a glitch in its ALU (arithmetic/logic unit).

And yes, I realize I'm resorting to personal attacks but... yanno, what the hell.. it's not like they ever listen to facts and logic anyway.

I'm assuming you've never worked with anybody that comes from a foreign country and who's native language is not English, Marcos.

If Sigs and Kiki are Russian plants, they're extremely talented and highly trained plants that write English better than most Americans do. Usually, just as with verbal communication, there are plenty of tells over written communication that you're talking to somebody who uses English as a second language that are fairly obvious in your first interaction with them. You don't need to hear an accent to figure it out.

I rarely ever have to ask either of them to clarify their statements. I can't say that for everybody else on these boards.

This would seem to me to be a huge waste of Russian resources to have them post in the RWED in 2019. Not only is their audience beyond small here, but I don't believe that they've actually changed a single mind on how they're going to vote. I don't think anybody's mind has ever been changed on this in the history of the RWED.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

The Mueller report is unequivocal in concluding that even if Trump is criminally innocent of obstruction, it is not for lack of trying. The main reason the investigation wasn’t completely thwarted was not that the president didn’t “endeavor” to thwart it — the definition of criminal obstruction — but rather that Trump’s subordinates refused to comply.

To take that out of lawyer-speak, Trump's subordinates understood that Trump was secretly obstructing justice, but if the subordinates refused to comply then Signym and 1kiki would not know that truth and Trump would not have to face an open-and-shut case of obstruction in a courtroom.

Most accounts of the Mueller report, understandably focused on the conclusions — obstruction? indictable? impeachable? — have omitted the detail needed to fully grasp both the madness in the White House and the sheer energy these aides had to expend to keep the presidential engine from jumping the track.

From the report itself, we learn in one example of potential obstruction of justice that on June 19, 2017, Trump instructed Corey Lewandowski, his former campaign manager, to tell Attorney General Jeff Sessions to give a speech denouncing the special counsel’s investigation. Lewandowski was at the time a private citizen — not, one would think, someone empowered to give orders to the attorney general.

Sessions, to the president’s lasting fury, had recused himself from the Russia investigation, which Trump saw as no obstacle to his further instruction to Lewandowski: tell Sessions to meet with the special counsel and order him to limit his inquiry to future election interference — implicitly shutting down the investigation into Russian interference on behalf of the Trump campaign in 2016. “Write this down,” the president told Lewandowski, who took notes on what Sessions was to say in the speech:

I know that I recused myself from certain things having to do with specific areas. But our POTUS…is being treated very unfairly. He shouldn’t have a Special Prosecutor/ Counsel b/c he hasn’t done anything wrong. I was on the campaign w/ him for nine months, there were no Russians involved with him. I know it for a fact b/c I was there. He didn’t do anything wrong except he ran the greatest campaign in American history…. Now a group of people want to subvert the Constitution of the United States. I am going to meet with the Special Prosecutor to explain this is very unfair and let the Special Prosecutor move forward with investigating election meddling for future elections so that nothing can happen in future elections….

The report then continues:

The President said that if Sessions delivered that statement he would be the “most popular guy in the country.” Lewandowski told the President he understood what the President wanted Sessions to do.

Lewandowski did not deliver this message to the attorney general.

Trump’s empty Cabinet

Standing on the White House driveway, the president told reporters, “I’m really at a point where we’re getting very close to having the Cabinet and other things that I want.”

It hasn’t quite worked out that way. Instead, Trump has a Cabinet-by-default, many of whose members were simply the last man — or woman — standing after others pulled out of the running, declined the president’s job offers or couldn’t get through their nomination hearings.

By not filling positions, Trump is making sure that those parts of the government operate without input from Trump. He is effectively not President in those parts, which helps explain the chaos running around his administration.

There are 131 key positions that have no Trump nominee for the Senate to confirm.

There are 124 key positions where no one has been confirmed, but there is a nominee.

The reasons for the unfilled positions are numerous. The White House has had some difficulty finding capable and willing candidates. The president memorably had difficulty finding a Chief of Staff to replace John Kelly. Mick Mulvaney was eventually named acting Chief of Staff after a number of other candidates declined.

Somebody really needs to Six Sigma the Government and get rid of all of those unnecessary positions.
