I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Country-specific effects of neonicotinoid pesticides on honey bees and wild bees

B. A. Woodcock1,*, J. M. Bullock1, R. F. Shore2, M. S. Heard1, M. G. Pereira2, J. Redhead1, L. Ridding1, H. Dean1, D. Sleep2, P. Henrys2, J. Peyton1, S. Hulmes1, L. Hulmes1, M. Sárospataki3, C. Saure4, M. Edwards5, E. Genersch6, S. Knäbe7, R. F. Pywell1

Damage confirmed

Early studies of the impacts of neonicotinoid insecticides on insect pollinators indicated considerable harm. However, lingering criticism was that the studies did not represent field-realistic levels of the chemicals or prevailing environmental conditions. Two studies, conducted on different crops and on two continents, now substantiate that neonicotinoids diminish bee health (see the Perspective by Kerr). Tsvetkov et al. find that bees near corn crops are exposed to neonicotinoids for 3 to 4 months via nontarget pollen, resulting in decreased survival and immune responses, especially when coexposed to a commonly used agrochemical fungicide. Woodcock et al., in a multicounty experiment on rapeseed in Europe, find that neonicotinoid exposure from several nontarget sources reduces overwintering success and colony reproduction in both honeybees and wild bees. These field results confirm that neonicotinoids negatively affect pollinator health under realistic agricultural conditions.

I suppose that Obama will dictate that more of this be sprayed all across the world - he didn't kill nearly enough bees or colonies while in Office. Maybe his poor language skills confused for him the meaning of Colonies, and he wanted to destroy all 57 of the Original Colonies.

JewelStaiteFan, I can tell there is too much carbon dioxide in the air you are breathing. Our lungs need oxygen, but that is only a fraction of what we breathe. The fraction of carbon dioxide is growing: It just crossed 400 parts per million, and high-end estimates extrapolating from current trends suggest it will hit 1,000 ppm by 2100. At that concentration, compared to the air we breathe now, human cognitive ability declines by 21 percent.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

400 ppm = 0.04 % Meanwhile, earth's atmosphere is 20.95% oxygen. So, the CO2 isn't causing a lack of inhaled oxygen. It's also not causing a problem of too much CO2, considering every exhaled breath is 4 to 5 % CO2, on average.

I saw that as well, Signy. Other papers I've seen indicate that neo-nics are environmentally persistent.

FWIW, I'd be really curious to see if neo-nics are linked to autism.

1kiki, JewelStaiteFan could be sitting in a room with no ventilation and rebreathing the same air over and over. The O2 is steadily decreasing and the CO2 increasing higher and higher until JewelStaiteFan has to attack Obama as the source of all troubles. But the article about CO2 affecting the brain is interesting all by itself.

JAYNEZTOWN

I dso wonder if the next real catastrophe is from humans trying to control too much, a collapse of many peoples and nature, not economy, not wars, not recessions, not terrorism but Mother Nature taking a bite back at the multi cultural tribes humans playing religion, playing like they know everything, playing 'God' and maybe because mankind didn't respect nature, polluted or messed up the food chain...I always feel the Natives, the Aboriginal, indigenous have something to teach us. There is a reason why Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the multi ethnic Niya city of silk traders in China, Easter Island, the multi-cultural Jam people of Turquoise Mountains, before Rome there were cities in Europe and thrived and died, The Anasazi, The Maya another extinct people...maybe humans will once again learn a forgotten lesson?

And generally, btw

If anyone needs proof how poorly our infotainment system serves us, and how well it serves corporations: the collapse of our global ecosystems should be front-page news, if not headlines, every day. Nothing is more vital to our survival except imminent global thermonuclear warfare.
