Facts sink in. But they don’t matter. Let that sink in.

In both experiments, the researchers found that corrections did what they were intended to do: nudge people toward the truth. Trump supporters were more resistant to the nudge, but they were nudged all the same.

But here’s the kicker: The corrections didn’t change their feelings about Trump (when participants in the corrections conditions were compared with controls).

“People were willing to say Trump was wrong, but it didn’t have much of an effect on what they felt about him,” Nyhan says.

So facts make an impression. They just don’t matter for our decision-making, which is a conclusion that’s abundant in psychology science.

All true SECOND, but its all whacking at Trumps supporters. In the end Trumps supporters will not balk as much when Mueller releases his report. A report republicans can not ignore. A report that leads to Trump and others going to jail.

Maybe the Democrats are colluding with Russia and this meeting was set up just to have it on record that Trump Jr. met with Russians?

Sounds just as plausible as anything that you're passive aggressively insinuating here.

Not insinuating Jack. Sticking with the facts. Another Russian contact not disclosed. What went down was at the least attempted collusion according to lawyers. It's getting worse very quickly for Trump and his campaign.

Just another piece of the puzzle Jack. These guys are dying by a thousand cuts. Lie after lie being revealed. Russian contact after undisclosed Russian contact still being revealed. And Jack, confirmation of the story comes from mutable White House staff.

You're a moron Jack.

That's not collusion.

Somebody has calls you and tells you they have information that can bury your opponent. Whether they do or don't, you go and meet them and at least see what they have to say.

That's just another day in politics.

At least I'm not slipping mindlessly into the tin-foil hat crowd.

Hey Jack

Email To Donald Trump Jr. Reportedly Spoke Of Russian Plot To Aid Trump Campaign

Donald Trump Jr. was told in an email that a meeting to obtain information damaging to presidential rival Hillary Clinton was connected to intelligence gathered by the Russian government to help elect his father, according to a report published in The New York Times on Monday.

The Times, citing multiple people with knowledge of the missive, said the email was sent by Rob Goldstone, a publicist who helped set up the meeting during the 2016 presidential campaign between Trump’s eldest son and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. The note reportedly said the information presented during the meeting would come from the Russian government.

Mark Corallo, the spokesman for President Trump’s personal lawyer, told The Guardian the president was “not aware of and did not attend the meeting” between his son and Veselnitskaya.

An email was sent by somebody from Russia to the Trump team that said they had damning information on Hillary Clinton.

You already posted that.

Is your point that I shouldn't support somebody that some people in Russia would rather have as President? That because somebody in Russia would want Trump as president over Hillary that I should have chose Hillary instead?

That doesn't make sense.

That's like me asking you if you like dogs. And if you say that you do like dogs than you must be a Nazi because Hitler loved dogs.

OK, I need to stop trying to enlighten you. You are incapable of thinking things through to a rational conclusion. It was an email informing Trump Jr. the Russian government was behind sending the women, AND gathering the evidence she would provide. This is one of the things Trump is charged with. Working with the Russians. You'll never understand anything because you can't evolve beyond an uneducated, uninformed street level logic. The trail of bread crumbs is undeniable yet you are starved of the logic needed to follow them.

THE EMAILS: Trump Jr. posts exchange that promised dirt on Clinton as 'part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump'

In response to Goldstone's initial email requesting the meeting and promising incriminating information on Clinton, Trump Jr. responded, "If it's what you say I love it especially later in the summer."

My post from another thread belongs in this thread for posterity. The clock is ticking.

Jared Kushner had two of the three meetings we now know of with Russians , two weeks before he filled out his disclosure form. He omitted these contacts. No way he forgot the meetings and that's a felony. Four days after Trump Jr. meet with the Russian lawyer, Trump said in a speech he was going to release damaging information about Clinton.

The emails are the proof Trump knew through first hand knowledge about the Russia hacking. Collusion is not illegal and that's the word that's been thrown out there. What is illegal is coordinating, conspiracy and benefitting by working with a foreign government. It violates our election laws.

Oh, of course not!

It is literally the ABC of How to Steal an Election.

A. A foreign government official flatly states they have something of value

B. A member of the Trump campaign schedules a meeting to get their hands on it

C. It is ILLEGAL to pursue that something of value

Can't get any simpler than that.

For example: someone tells you that there's a valuable object in a neighbor's house, and you meet with that someone and they tell it's there's, then you break into the house and it's empty. Did you commit a crime?

Don Jr. went to the meeting with the intent to obtain that damaging info, which in and of itself is ILLEGAL. Whether he got the info or not is irrelevant. The crime isn't in obtaining the object of his desire to get dirt on Hillary. The crime is that he met with a foreign official to gain something of value - for which there is a law.

Not to mention that he, and others, have flatly denied it since day one. Now, whether or not it meets the "collusion" aspect of the case is also irrelevant. He broke the law. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, especially when the stakes are at the highest level - the presidency.

Did Hillary break the law? You say, yes she did. I say, if this is the case - fuck her, throw her in jail. Like Donald said, "Lock her up!" But let's not deflect.
This case is about the Trump campaign and conspiring with Russian officials, and despite the fact that you, and others, hate Hillary it doesn't change the fact that Don Jr. went to meet with a foreign official (one that doesn't even speak English)
to obtain something of value.

It is clear to me. Direct from the horse's mouth.

The Russian that met Trump Jr., Natalia Veselnitskaya, was the lawyer in a money laundering case squashed by Trump Sr.

So: was there a deal made last year? Did Trump campaign aides—or Trump himself—agree to scuttle the case against Prevezon in return for dirt on Hillary Clinton?

This might be a big stretch, nothing more than a bit of connecting-the-dots conspiracy theorizing. Alternatively, it might be the real deal. If it is, it’s the first step toward the Watergate-ization of the Trump-Russia scandal.

Today the former president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison on corruption and money laundering charges. But he’s not going to jail just yet; the judge wrote he believed it would be too “traumatic” to put a former president behind bars. Da Silva will be a free man while he appeals the decision. In other news, Trump left the country for France for no reason.

Russian Officials Overheard Discussing Trump Associates Before Campaign Began

WASHINGTON—Investigators are re-examining conversations detected by U.S. intelligence agencies in spring 2015 that captured Russian government officials discussing associates of Donald Trump, according to current and former U.S. officials, a move prompted by revelations that the president’s eldest son met with a Russian lawyer last year.

But intelligence officials are now reviewing the findings, especially following reports that Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin last June in an effort to obtain damaging information about Hillary Clinton. According to an email chain Trump Jr. posted online Tuesday, he was told ahead of time that the meeting was "part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump."

The Trump campaign is under multiple congressional investigations and an FBI counterintelligence inquiry over its connections to Russia and whether it played any role in Russia's interference in the 2016 election.

Though Trump has repeatedly blasted the investigations and called them a "witch hunt," the revelations about Trump Jr. have reignited the debate over whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the election.

Mike Pence’s Press Secretary Won’t Say If His Boss Met With Russians

Vice President Mike Pence quickly moved to distance himself from Donald Trump Jr. this week after a series of bombshell reports found the president’s eldest son had met in June 2016 with a Russian lawyer in an effort to obtain damaging intel on presidential rival Hillary Clinton.

Pence’s spokesman Marc Lotter sought Wednesday to increase that separation during an interview on Fox News but refused, repeatedly, to say if the vice president had met with any Russians himself during the presidential campaign.

Hemmer, not to be deterred, asked again: “I understand. Fully aware of the statement there. Just come back to this question here: If it wasn’t a private citizen from Russia, did he ever meet with representatives from the Russian government during the campaign?”

“That stuff, the special prosecutors and the counsels are all looking at,” Lotter said, before saying once again that Pence was focused on other things during the campaign.

President Trump's lawyer says pardons 'are not on the table' in Russia probe

President Donald Trump's legal team is disputing reports that the president or others in the White House are discussing the prospect of using presidential pardons.

The Washington Post reported this morning that Trump was asking people on his team about the extent of his ability as president to pardon people in relation to the special counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion with members of the Trump campaign.

Despite his boastful tweets, Trump had negative coattails in 2016
by Matthew Yglesias

Nobody really owes him anything.

President Trump kicked the political week off to an early start with a provocative late-afternoon Sunday tweet taking congressional Republicans to task for their insufficiently zealous defense of, well, President Trump.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
It's very sad that Republicans, even some that were carried over the line on my back, do very little to protect their President.
3:14 PM - 23 Jul 2017

A tweet like this would suggest he’s a wildly popular president who is targeting members of his own party who might worry about their political futures — but the reality is closer to the opposite.

It’s easy to confuse Trump’s ability to defy expectations by winning the presidency with the idea that he was an extraordinarily effective candidate.

Had Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) put in a couple more solid debate performances and won the GOP nomination, people would have expected him to beat Hillary Clinton and he probably would have lived up to those expectations. Democrats playing the 2016 blame game would do well to remember that the fundamentals that year (2 terms of a Democrat, why make it 3, and slow economic growth) favored the GOP, and what Trump did in essence was come close to squandering that edge.

Though Trump’s surprise win in 2016 might make him seem like a kind of political savant, the reality is he was a drag on his party, a president who didn’t help anyone get over the finish line — offering nothing but anti-coattails.

Trump underperformed in 2016 compared to his rivals

The 2016 election left the national GOP in an extremely powerful position, but it was, paradoxically, a fairly underwhelming performance. Republicans lost two Senate seats and half a dozen House seats.

And critically, Trump did worse than GOP Senate candidates in the key battleground states. Trump finished about half a percentage point behind Sen. Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania and almost 3 points behind Ron Johnson in Wisconsin.

And he did a lot worse than Sen. Rob Portman in Ohio, who outperformed Trump by over 6.5 points; Sen. John McCain in Arizona, who outperformed Trump by nearly 6; and Sen. Marco Rubio in Florida, who beat Trump by 4. What’s particularly telling is that Trump was at odds with those three senators to an unusual degree — Rubio, particularly, opposed him in the primary and once said Trump was a “con artist.” Distance from the Republican nominee clearly helped them, even in three states Trump won.

Overall, Republicans owe Trump very little

In tight Midwestern races, generic Republicans did better than Trump. In a few red-leaning states, Republicans who distanced themselves from Trump did way better than he did.

Nobody in the Senate particularly owes Trump anything. Which means that in reality, the remarkable thing is just how far congressional Republicans have been willing to go to protect Trump.

There’s a fair amount of reason to believe that the whole conservative agenda might be better served by a less-manic, less-conflict-prone leader than the one they ended up stuck with.

If mid-term elections don’t increase the number of GOP Congressmen, it could be impeachment time for the GOP to dump Trump if he doesn’t change his ways.

“FBI investigators and others,” Bloomberg reported, “are looking at Russian purchases of apartments in Trump buildings, Trump’s involvement in a controversial SoHo development in New York with Russian associates, the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow and Trump’s sale of a Florida mansion to a Russian oligarch in 2008.”

In a more rule-bound environment, Mueller’s interest in opening Trump’s books would probably be checkmate for the president. It is widely suspected that a peek under the hood of the Trump organization will reveal serious financial crimes. Assuming that informed speculation is correct, Mueller would uncover the wrongdoing and bring down a president, or Trump would fire Mueller and Congress would step in to edge Trump out.

This is assuming our system of checks and balances hasn’t broken down. Republicans have given every indication over the course of the past several months that no malfeasance, no matter how naked and severe, will impel them to rein in Trump or impeach him.

That leaves the crisis to be decided by the midterm election. That election is 16 months away. Between now and then, Trump’s DOJ and his sham election-integrity commission will seek to disenfranchise as many Democratic voters as possible, while the president himself beseeches further foreign interference aimed at Democratic candidates. Absent the necessary election sweep, everything Trump will have done for his own enrichment and protection will have been ratified, and a point of no return will have been crossed.

Trump’s recklessness is raising the stakes. The claims that Trump and his legal team are putting forward are already radical: that Trump can’t be charged with obstruction of justice because it’s in his power to terminate an investigation at any time. Although he came close, Nixon would not go that far. As president, Trump is different. Trump is preparing to drive the political system over the cliff.

Bob Bauer wrote on the blog Lawfare that Trump firing Robert Mueller would end the investigation and leave only impeachment as a remedy, with Trump counting on Republicans in the House and the Senate to support him no matter what. If the Democrats took back the House in the 2018 midterm elections, Trump could be impeached, but he would remain in power since Democrats won’t have the two-thirds votes necessary in the Senate to remove him. Emma Loop of BuzzFeed interviewed four Republican senators about whether firing Mueller would be a mistake. Only one, Marco Rubio of Florida, unequivocally said yes.

One of the main reasons for elevating Mueller as a public figure — to make him a household name — is so that firing him would become a more politically costly act. If Trump fires Mueller before the Democrats can make it a national issue, then the public will be playing catch-up with the story. The better known Mueller is, the more costly his firing would be to Trump.

If Republican Senators won't defend Mueller’s job, and Mueller is fired, they’ll be tainted as enablers in the next election.

Fox News says Trump wants an Attorney General that will fire Mueller. To fire Mueller, Trump must first fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions because Sessions cannot fire Mueller, only the Deputy Attorney General can since Sessions has recused himself. Sessions resigned from the Senate to take the Attorney General job and he isn't quitting another perfectly good job just to please a fickle Trump.

Trump thinks that the worst that could happen is he writes more books like Nixon did in retirement. And Trump will have an advantage that Nixon didn't -- Trump has money to hire ghostwriters to do the actual work of writing his books. Trump's books will be better than Nixon's, Trump's will be the best, ever! Believe me.

Sounds good to me.

The last time that happened, James Buchanan was President. It was before the steering wheel was invented, but Buchanan froze -- he couldn't steer left or right when the nation got to a curve in the road and the whole system went over a cliff. He didn't anticipate what happened next. When the political system crashed and burned at the base of the cliff, it was the Civil War. Buchanan is now considered the worst President, ever. But Trump wants that title.

If civil war happens, they're not coming for me and my collective nothing.

Hope you built that moat.
