PHYRELIGHT

I highly recommend The Quiet Man too. If that film had been in anyone else's hands, it would have been really terrible, but John Ford and the cast and crew all did an incredible job that withstands the test of time. Also, Far and Away begins in Ireland and ends in Oklahoma. And there's also the drama Evelyn with Pierce Brosnan about a father who loses his children because his wife left him and he's out of work (it's heart wrenching to watch).

Darksiders can keep their cookies. We have better writers.

Grrr. Argghh.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'd recommend another John Ford film, "The Long Gray Line" starring Tyrone Power. It is set in the U.S., at West Point, but it is about an Irish immigrant's experiences there and the influence he had on so many of the cadets. Another Tyrone Power film would be "Luck of the Irish."

Then there's David Lean's "Ryan's Daughter."

"Divorcing Jack" is very good and irreverently funny with a somewhat high body count for a comedy. Set just after the peace accords in the late 90's mostly in and around Belfast. "The Wind that shakes the Barley" is another movie set around the 1919-1923 period of independence and civil war, but set away from Dublin with no national figures really shows how terribly hard the choices were in that time. Really well done.

"The Secret of Roan Inish" is one of my all time favorite movies about a girl sent to live with her grandparents and rediscovers her families history. A really well done movie by John Sayles and an excellent cast.

"Into the West" about two poor young brothers who find a special horse and have an adventure. This one some may like and others not. It seems like it would be a childrens movie, but it is not really.

"The Commitments" about a young group of musicians trying to make it in Blues music in Ireland. From the book by Roddy Doyle and part of the excellent "Barrytown trilogy"

Those are a few good Irish movies and probably a lot more I forgot as well.

Well Samoran I will be checking these good irish movies out. Irish independent films are usually pretty good. Now I have some I haven't seen yet. Into the West is a really cute movie. Their going to Arizona it cracked me up. lator gator pc

Yes on THE COMMITMENTS. That and AMADEUS are my two favorite music movies (not musicals, movies that are about music).

The bit that Joey tells Jimmy at the end is one of my favorite end bits in a movie. I thought of that when SERENITY didn't do too well at the box office and it seemed like our hopes for further films or a new series had been dashed.

"Success of the band was irrelevant. You've exceeded their expectations in life, you've lifted their horizons. Sure we could have been famous and made albums and all that, but that would have been predictable. This way it's poetry."

It's the same way I feel about JERICHO being canceled for good this time. Just the fact that we loved it so much that we managed to get a movie spin-off or another season get greenlit is amazing enough for me. Whether it succeeded or failed is beside the point.

Yes I forgot about "Waking Ned Devine", that was really good and had lots of funny moments.

I didn't know Jericho was cancelled again. I am kind of sad about it because I thought they had a lot of good stories left to tell. I think CBS has a history of dumping shows that have no future like "Star Trek". That one sunk like a stone just like they thought. At least there is still "Battlestar Galactica".

All of these are good movies and I think the "Quiet Man" is one of my all time favorite movies.

Another one about an Irish American is "Cinderella Man" with Russell Crowe about James Braddock, a heavyweight boxer during the Depression. A true "rags to riches" story. It's an excellent and mainly over looked movie despite being directed by Ron Howard.

Come on people, "The Crying Game."

Transvestites, terrorism, sex, explosions, a love story all wrapped in one. And it was a shocker at the time, the secret of the love interest being kept a secret for so long and nominated for Oscars. Really great movie. Even if Forrest Whitiker was badly cast.
