Author’s Note: Thank you very much for commenting on my stories. The reviews did plenty for my self esteem and I wrote the whole next chapter today when I returned home from school. So hopefully you’ll like it, and it surprises you!

Learning to be Patient Chapter 2 Threats

“Now don’t any of you go turning off the communicators for any reason,” Mal warned sternly. He has assembled his crew in the cargo area of Serenity to give them a harsh talking to before they set so much as a pinkie toe onto Tempest. “It took a long time and a pretty penny to round up enough for each of us,” he continued not dropping the seriousness tone of his voice.

He looked sternly to his crew, few of which seemed to be paying attention. River sat on the catwalk, her legs dangling over the side innocently as her mind seemed to wander out of the cargo area as she stared down to the group.

Jayne glanced up from behind the Captain where he was cleaning one of his many guns and caught her eyes. She kept a hold on his as if she were trying to communicate with him.

“Jayne,” Mal called, “Have you been listening to a gorram word I’ve been saying?” All eyes fell on Jayne and as he felt a small amount of blood pool under his cheeks he scrambled to think of a diversion.

“You’re being all moon-brained about this Mal,” he exclaimed angrily trying to create a cover, “Nothing bad ain’t gonna happen.”

“Something bad always happens,” Inara reminded as she moved past River gracefully, the extra material of the glossy dress she wore flowing lightly.

“Well because I know Jayne is gonna take extra caution I think I can relax now,” Mall informed sarcastically, “I want everyone to be in contact, no one is to go past the town square, and everyone has to be back on the ship in two hours. If that’s a problem, you’ll just have to find some other mode of transportation.”

“Sir,” Zoë interrupted him before he could continue further, “We should really be getting to the drop off.” She held his gaze for a moment, then cocked her gun.

“Two hours,” Mal concluded as he hit the button triggering the doors to open, and Tempest was no longer a nightmare. Mal placed his gun in its holster, then looked to Jayne and Zoë before he took the vital first steps off the security of Serenity and to the unknown planet below.

He made it down the ramp completely, his feet coming in contact with the dock before he looked back to them again, “What?” Jayne yelled at him with a mocking tone, “Thought you was gonna explode or something?”

Mal smirked, “Let’s just get this over with.”

“So,” Kaylee looked to Simon, an expectant smile upon her face, “We got more then enough time for dinner.”

“Here bao bai?” he questioned gently as he grasp her hand in his. They began to slowly descend down the ramp, “I mean it seems like a very nice planet, but it’s crawling with alliance. I think it’d be better for both of us if we stuck to the lower level shops for now.”

She stopped and turned to him her face grave, “But we were supposed to go to dinner,” she reminded him, “You promised.”

“I know, and we will, just not here Kaylee,” he informed, holding both her hands in his, “I have some shopping to get done, and our time is limited here to begin with.”

“Yeah,” she agreed pulling her hands away from him, “I mean it ain’t necessary for us to spend every hour of every day with each other,” she enlightened as she turned and walked away.

“Kaylee,” he sighed as he ran to catch up to her, “That’s not what-”

“I ain’t mad Simon,” she replied her voice steady, “Just go shopping we’ll talk about it later,” she finished and kept walking, letting Simon watch her go in confusion.

“Now that was a mighty pretty thing,” Mal’s voice teased from behind him, “Sure got her awful upset in a hurry. You really have a talent, Doctor.”

“It’s nothing,” Simon disclosed as he moved to walk by Mal, his eyes watching the ground in shame. However the Captain’s arm shot out and grabbed his own.

“You and Kaylee getting a mite serious,” he announced from out of the blue, his hand growing tighter around Simon’s arm, “she’s really taken a shine to you.”

Simon looked awkwardly at Mal’s hand choking his bicep, “Umm, yeah.”

“You do anything that hurts her, in anyway, and she won’t be the only one feeling pain,” Mal whispered hoarsely, his voice taking on an evil twist.

Simon yanked his arm away from Mal, “I would never do anything to hurt Kaylee,” he grumbled, his eyes becoming angry slants glaring into the Captain’s for a few moments before he turned to leave.

“We’ll see,” Mal called after him, adding a snicker at the end that unnerved Simon.

He sighed; this was turning out to be one of the worst days of his life. Maybe he should’ve just gone to dinner with Kaylee, maybe he should’ve-

“Hey,” Simon groaned as Jayne’s large hand caught his shirt by the collar.

The mercenary only let out an evil smile as he pulled Simon close, “I’m guessing the Captain just gave you the speech.”

“Yeah,” Simon replied, looking directly into the man’s eyes.

“Well whatever he threatened, it goes double for me,” he announced the pushed Simon away and walked over to Mal.

Mal chuckled a bit as Jayne approached and he soon joined in the mirth. “Sir?” Zoë questioned as she stalked from behind, “Do you think that was really necessary?”

“Course it wasn’t Zoë,” Mal answered still smiling at the situation, “But I did thoroughly enjoy it.”

“River honey,” Inara began as she advanced to the young girl who sat hunched over at the dinner table, “What are you drawing, it’s absolutely beautiful.”

“It’s what I see at night. The weights are gone. The hurt is extinguished,” she responded, taking a light green marker and making smooth movements along the top of the page.

“You’re very talented,” Inara complimented as she took a seat beside her.

“You are too, you just don’t acknowledge it,” River smiled, leaning closer to her drawing until her nose was pressed against the page. “You don’t acknowledge a lot of things.”

Inara cocked an eyebrow to the girl who only continued to make darker lines at the top of her page. “River what-”

“Here,” River tucked a long, wavy strand of hair behind her ear and pushed a pile of markers over to Inara. There had to be more then a dozen varying in colors, “Stop hiding everything.”

Inara let a smile cross her face as she picked up a scrap of paper and began drawing what she saw in her dreams. For moment she felt as relaxed as she’d ever been. Just sitting in the comfortable silence of the common room, coloring a pink and yellow cloud with a child’s marker.

Suddenly River flung her marker across the room. Pushing her chair away from the table and jumping back. She fell to the ground with great momentum, her hands clutched tightly around her ears, hollering in pain.

Inara dropped to her knees beside the girl, bringing her into a reassuring hug, “It’s okay River,” she consoled.

“No,” River cried, her face becoming red and tears staining her cheeks, “It’s not okay; we have to get out of here fast. We have to get out of here now!” She leapt up, pushing Inara away and bounded to the control room unevenly.

“River?” Inara called after her, gathering her dress at the sides so she didn’t fall while running after the girl, “ River what is going on!”

By the time she reached the cockpit, River was already situated in the pilot’s seat and turning flipping on switches “We have to leave now! We should’ve left yesterday!” she exclaimed.

“Why?” Inara asked as the young girl rummaged through a bin beside the chair until she pulled out a communicator.

Her hand stopped short of bringing the device to her mouth. She paused for a moment until her truthful, brown eyes met Inara’s and answered, “Reavers.”

Ooh, that was an evil cliffhanger. I like your River characterization and I think you've got a good handle on Jayne as well. Keep going ... I don't like the idea of Kaylee wondering Tempest, alone, with Reavers around ... Don't be mean.
