Well, I just keep trying, so. . .

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 2939    RATING: 9    SERIES: FIREFLY

Harold Helsing marched through the hatch slowly, making each Alliancemen squirm as he did. Make sure they squirm. He did not hesitate to walk straight up to the captain, keeping his blue-gloved hands in view. “Captain Marcus. I trust the finest in the Core are keeping their priorities straight. It would be so disappointing if this entire ship had to be scrapped.” He paused, watching the captain. “After all, my Academy could always use the funds, and we are always short of supplies.” Marcus visibly went pale. Lackeys never stopped being afraid of losing all of their hard earned, pee goo-kissing effort going to waste. “No sir, we are keeping just out of range of Regan Tam’s transport. They’ll be landing on Ariel within the hour. Once there, you may disembark and make contact with the authorities there.” Helsing smiled slightly. “Oh, I was hoping that we could meet them here, aboard the finest ship in the Core.” He raised a hand, to indicate the Magellan. “After all, it would seem proper to brief them here. I think your private quarters would be perfect, Captain. Two hours, I expect to meet Chief Warden of Law Michaels.” He turned, and could almost hear the whimper escaping from Marcus. Well, not almost. * * * Back in his own private ship, docked to the Magellan, First Power Helsing opened the small box with a simple code, and looked lovingly at the little vial held in stasis within. “What a beautiful girl,” he whispered, stroking the vial slightly. “What a lovely little girl.” He leaned in, and nearly felt the surging psychic power from the embryo. “Who could make a father prouder?” * * * Helsing left the ship, followed by Second Power Davis. Neither spoke as they strode slowly to the captains quarters. The lieutenant standing guard snapped to attention so fast Helsing was surprised he didn’t break in half. Any crisper and he would be made of stone. Helsing didn’t acknowledge him as he walked through the door. He was surprised by the captain already waiting, with Chief Michaels. Marcus stood, gesturing to the Chief. “Agent Helsing, this is-” Helsing cut him off with a withering stare, as Davis said simply, “We know who he is, captain, which is why Agent Helsing asked for him by name.” Marcus swallowed, and shut up. “Chief Warden of Law Michaels, I am Agent Helsing, and this is Agent Davis. We’re here on Council business.” Helsing watched Michaels with a critical eye. Michaels had risen, and now faced them. A blonde man of about fifty, his monstrous bulk seemed out of place in a ship. His clothes strained at his move as he offered his hand to shake. “Welcome to Ariel, agent.” Helsing walked around the offered hand, taking a seat at the table. “Thank you, Chief Michaels. I’m sure you’re interested in why we’re here.” Davis moved around to stand behind him, as Michaels took his seat in concern. “Well, it’s not often an Alliance cruiser escorts a civilian inter-Core transport,” Michaels commented, still clearly nervous. “Have you said that we were escorting the ship to anyone?” Helsing asked, alarmed. “Not a word, except I was a little puzzled over it,” answered Michaels defensively. Helsing relaxed a bit. “Seriously, though. Who was on that ship that was so important?” Davis reached into his pocket, and pulled out the paper. “This man,” he said, stepping forward and handing it to Michaels. “Regan Tam, and his wife. And their unborn child.” * * * Several years later, Helsing walked into the ship and found Davis. His face held no emotion. “She’s been born.” His voice trembled at it. Davis looked up, stunned. “Preliminaries?” Helsing nodded. He sat down, shocked. “She’s…perfect, Second Power. Absolutely perfect. She will be doing the work of the average adult by three, at least. And, when she is fourteen…” he trailed off, too excited for words. Helsing leaned back, opposite Davis. He was ninety now, so he had earned the right to relax. Especially on a day like this. He closed his eyes, smiling slowly. “River Tam will be the best of my children, Second Power. She will be our starry child. And what’s more, the Academy is right here. All of my children will have to be shuttled here, from offworld. But River Tam, my greatest daughter, she will be the focal point. She will be the greatest power in all the ‘Verse. And none shall keep us from molding her to… “Perfection.”

Shiny. This is quite well done, Raven. I enjoy your insight into the blue hands and River's beginnings. You should keep going. This is a great storyline.

SAINT JAYNE

Okay, you're up against someone who doesn't like to read and a 'purist' who doesn't like anybody but Joss messing with the story.

It's good material. It's intriguing, and I love that these segments are short. If they were novelettes, I would have given up no matter how good they were. The premise has a good draw. I won't comment on the writing style because I am untrained, but for me it is easy to read.

I look forward to more, and I hope you get satisfaction out of creating these short stories.

Haven't read it yet, but I will! Just noticed that on my computer the URL is: http://www.fireflyfans.net/bluesun.aspx?bid=666. How odd.
