A new job opportunity brings the crew of Serenity to Londinum, where an old acquantaince is waiting.

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 2118    RATING: 8    SERIES: FIREFLY

I'm so proud of myself...I got this written two days after the first part. A new record for me. Obviously I don't own any of the characters, and am just torturing them for my own amusement and that of my lovely viewers.Enjoy ^^ *** After administrating Kaylee with the medicine the way that Simon had told him to, Mal walked back to his own room and lay down staring at the ceiling, just thinking. It was a well known fact that Mal was protective of his crew, especially Kaylee. Everyone was. She was the little sister of them all, which was why if someone messed with her, there would be at least two guns situated on the perpetrator and angry glares from everyone else. Because of this fact, and Kaylee’s unassuming disposition, Mal had taken to the older brother role she had placed upon him, and with this new information in his mind, he could not help but feel as though he had failed her in some way. He knew that there was nothing he could have done, just like he had told Kaylee that there was nothing she could have done, but knowing that never stopped the guilt. Besides the guilt, there was the fact that Mal did not know how to help her. He knew that River was right in that Kaylee needed to deal with this by herself, but it pained him to think of the ever smiling, bubbly mechanic coping with something that no person should ever have to cope with, something that he personally didn’t know if Kaylee would know how to deal with. Sighing as he stared at the ceiling, Mal could only hope that nothing else drastic would happen for a long time. In the infirmary, Simon was putting supplies away while River swung her legs back and forth, having come back from her trip to her room to get into pajamas. “The mind can’t heal if the body doesn’t rest” Simon sighed as he looked at his sister. “But she is resting. The medicine that Mal gave Kaylee is intended for her to do just that.” “It won’t wor.k He will haunt her until he is dead.” After saying that, River got up and headed to her room, leaving Simon to contemplate what her words meant exactly. He was missing something, that much was obvious, but what was it? And how could he help Kaylee if River was correct with her predictions? “Until he is dead?” The last part was voiced aloud. Simon could have sworn that the captain had killed Jubal Early. Was it even remotely possible that the bounty hunter had survived? The following morning began like any morning on Serenity. The crew was wondering what how far their fuel would last and what their next move should be. Mal had been told of a job at Londnium, which meant that Kaylee could get some new parts for the ship. “What’s she need them parts for? Not getting any from the doctor so she needs to tinker with the engine? I guess that explains her silence around him.” Jayne laughed some until he realized he was the only one laughing. Kaylee had gone quiet before muttering something about needing to check the fuel oil level and leaving, Simon following after her. Wash took that moment to go and set the coordinates, leaving Jayne alone with a very upset Mal, an exasperated Zoe, a quiet Inara and Book, and a very creepy River. “What?” “Jayne…you know how I feel about that kind of talk at this table…” Mal’s voice was low before he continued, making Jayne shift uncomfortably. It wasn’t as bad as when he sold out the siblings during the medicine scam, but he knew he had overstepped his boundaries, which was a step in the right direction when it came to the mercenary. “Now if you say one more thing to upset Kaylee, I guarantee your next mission will be less than glamorous, and you will not be eating with the rest of us for a long time. Do I make myself clear?” Jayne nodded than got up and headed to his room. Simon knocked on the frame of the entrance to the engine room so as to alert Kaylee of his presence, knowing better than to startle the girl, especially in this room. “May I come in?” Kaylee looked up from her work on the grav-dampener and nodded, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, thus smudging her forehead. “‘Course y’can, Simon…didja need anythin’? Somethin’ wrong in the infirmary?” Simon shook his head before walking into Kaylee’s sanctuary of sorts. He could not fathom how someone could threaten her in there of all places. But those were thoughts he would have to deal with at another time, as his main priority was to ensure that she was doing alright. “The captain told me you were having problems sleeping, so I wanted to make sure that you were feeling alright.” Kaylee nodded some, relieved that he wasn’t digging into anything that would be upsetting. “Oh, yeah, what you gave me last night helped. Thanks.” Kaylee forced a smile at Simon, who masked his worry with a curt nod. “Of course. If you find yourself unable to sleep tonight, let me know and I will give you another dosage.” “Okey-dokey” Yep, Kaylee was pretending to be fine, she was all smiles, even if they didn’t reach her eyes, making Simon feel powerless to help. He was getting quite used to that feeling, first with River and now Kaylee, it really was a feeling that the young doctor did not like. Sensing the tension in the air, Simon gave one last nod before walking back towards the infirmary, his mind racing. The week long trip to Londinum seemed to pass by in silence, meaning no major catastrophes along the way. Jayne kept his mouth shut, much to the relief of Mal and Simon, and Kaylee continued to pretend that all was fine in her world of shiny goodness and bubbles, and she had almost everyone convinced she was fine. Because there was nothing to do in the engine room, and there was a two hour lull until they docked, Inara was doing Kaylee’s hair, hoping to initiate a girl talk to figure out exactly what was bothering her friend. “You seem very stressed, Mei-mei…have you been sleeping well?” “Oh yes. I haven’t had a dream in a while now” This was not the answer Inara had been expecting. Kaylee loved dreaming, she said it took her to places she otherwise couldn’t go to, gave her a chance with the doctor. “Really…? Why haven’t you been dreaming? Dreaming is a very important aspect to learning something about your self. It helps you cope with life and lets you access your true wants.” “Maybe I don’t want what my dreams are saying. Maybe I just want to be Kaylee and not dream.” Realizing she had just snapped at Inara, Kaylee sighed softly, playing with her hands. “Sorry, ‘nara. I just…my dreams have been very scary and so the doctor gave me some medicine to help me through the night. But I’m fine, really.” Inara just nodded worriedly. She would have to talk to Mal about this. She did not like the aspect of Kaylee’s dreams being dark or the fact that she was resorting to drugs to be able to sleep, but there was nothing to say. “Alright, Mei-mei…well, what is going on between you and the young doctor? Hmm? Have you grown bored?” “No. I just figured y’know. I realized nothin’ will come of it and gave up.” “Kaylee Frye! I have never known you to give up on something. What is going on?” “Nothin’, I’m just tired of fawning after him when he has no interest in me, is all.” “I see. Well, don’t give up hope, alright?” Kaylee nodded before getting up and thanking Inara than left the room, leaving the companion to worry. Once docked in Londinum, everyone went about their business. Simon, River and Wash stayed aboard Serenity while Jayne, Mal and Zoe went to see about this job Mal was talking about. Book had some friends in the area from his old Order that he wished to meet up with for a few hours and Inara had a client, leaving Kaylee to go to the shop by herself, which should not have taken more than an hour, but seeing at how this was Kaylee, it didn’t really register to any of the crew that something could be wrong when she was still gone after Mal, Zoe and Jayne returned. Kaylee often got caught up when in a parts shop. When two more hours passed, bring the return of Inara and Book, Mal began to worry, although he masked it. “Zoe, can you go to the part shop and see what is taking so gorram long?” “Of course, Sir” Nodding some, Zoe headed out and in the direction of the shop. Ten minutes passed and all seemed to be fine, until River started screaming, curling up in the corner of the room with her hands over her ears, Simon rushing to her. “Mei-mei! What is it?!” “He’s hurting her!!!!” Simon hugged his younger sister, trying to calm her down. “No one is hurting anyone…shh…” He figured this was just another side effect of what the Alliance did to River in their experiments. “He has her! He’s hurting her!” Mal walked in, looking between the two siblings, asking the question on Simon’s mind. “Who has who?” River never had a chance to answer though, because Zoe ran in, looking worried. “Sir, there’s no sign of Kaylee. The shop owner said some guy forced her out of the store and that she looked frightened.” Simon’s heart dropped as Mal went ashen. River had warned him. Kaylee couldn’t heal until he was dead. And it would appear as though Jubal Early was still alive and well.

The mark of a great writer is that they won't leave you hanging. The mark of a good writer is that they have some idea of where they will go and it will be posted soon. I guess I'm an alright writer....*snicker*
