Jayne’s world had always been small. Him, his maw, and Matty at first, then various gangs throughout his adult life, and finally, the crew of Serenity. There was always a generous helpin’ of whores and people to shoot, but for the most part, Jayne was a big man in a very little world. And for the most part, he was happy.

Kaylee’s world had always been big. Six brothers, two sisters, a motley of cousins and aunts and uncles and nice church ladies who might as well been blood, friends everywhere she went, and a generous helpin’ of people she’d stolen the hearts of. There was never enough time for her to be lonely. For the most part, Kaylee was a little girl in a very big world. And for the most part, she was happy.

Lately, however, their worlds had been reduced to two people.
