6ixStringJack: SPOILERS BELOW FOR ANYBODY INTERESTED IN SEEING LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. :) |
6ixStringJack: And in this theory (as well as others), Jack ends up with the short end of the Monkey's Paw. He got what he asked for. He's sure going to be number 1. But only for one night. |
6ixStringJack: * I mean Jack! David is the actor's first name. Whoops. |

6ixStringJack: I liked one theory I saw that Abraxis (in that parallel universe where Johnny Carson still exists) is actually above both God and the Devil, and even though it was the Devil that was in Lilly, it was Abraxis himself who was ordering the Devil to do what he did. In that theory, the first time David signed a contract, it was with the Devil himself, but when he went back years later after the death of his wife and still not being successful, the second contract he made was with Abraxis. It wasn't until the Devil did what was done at the end that David finished the ritual the cult started for Abraxis by doing what he did at the end that the ritual was complete, and Abraxis was actually what was unleashed into every household watching. If you notice at the bottom of the screen at the very end, it says "END OF TRANSMISSION", but right before it fades out it switches to "SO IT IS DONE". |
6ixStringJack: When you're putting ambiguous things like Abraxis in there, which can mean entirely different things depending on who's talking about Abraxis in the first place, I think that leaves the movie open much more to lore that people haven't uncovered that might not even be in the movie itself. |

6ixStringJack: I'm putting Late Night With the Devil loosely in that group only because I don't believe that anybody out there (at least who's opinion I've seen) has actually figured it all out. And, if done well, being "close" doesn't really mean anything. You could still be really far away from the actual answer. |
6ixStringJack: I think Lynch's stuff (outside of pretty much Dune) is really about how much thought you want to put into it after you've seen it. You won't even be mistaken that you don't know what's going on after watching Mullholland Drive. I think Lost Highway probably did a better job wrapping it all up and at least making some sense of some main plot oints, even though there's sure to be strings everywhere to pull at. I never really felt the pull back to that one like I did with movies like Mullholland Drive or similar non-Lynch stuff like Donnie Darko. |
6ixStringJack: Yeah. They made a lot of Robert Blake and his white face in the ads for sure. I know they dropped part of that conversation that we're both talking about too. |
6ixStringJack: Yeah. They made a lot of Robert Blake and his white face in the ads for sure. I know they dropped part of that conversation that we're both talking about too. |
Brenda: The tailgating scene from it being part of the movie. Just reminded me of other tailgating scenes in other movies. You know where the car is coming up behind then the first driver goes to wave him by. Then they either go by and stop or they bang into the other car's rear bumper. So, not much. It had more impact as a stand alone in the YouTube clip. |
Brenda: Nope. Yeah, there has been a lot more creepy movies since that. I think I remember the ads featuring Robert Blake's face in them. But I could be wrong. It was for me more along the lines of Late Night with the Devil. Well, if you call it Lynchian then yeah. I got Dune better than this. |
6ixStringJack: I still love that tailgating scene, even if I've forgotten almost everything else about the movie. |
6ixStringJack: What did you think? |
6ixStringJack: Wasn't as creepy as I remember, huh? Probably because we got about 30 years of content pushing boundaries since that was released and what used to be creepy just isn't all that creepy anymore, huh? I remember that bit being in the commercial (something about him talking to himself who was already somewhere else or something), and I remember me and my younger bro being creeped out. I didn't think you'd find Lost Highway to be really scary though, probably Late Night With The Devil scary at most, which wasn't much. It's just Lynchian, meaning you probably didn't get it because nobody but Lynch gets it. |
Brenda: It started with a message through the house intercom and then just went on from there. The phone call at that party with Robert Blake was strange and got me wondering who his character was. Not to mention the white face. The only feeling I got was weird and useless cops. |
6ixStringJack: Yeah. I've only seen Lost Highway maybe twice. I don't remember much. Something about a phone call that was bone chilling at one point maybe? I know I remember way more about the "feelings" I recall of Lynch films than the actual plot. |
Brenda: Oh, I've been watching Lost Highway. Not scary but it is heavy on the weird for sure. Feels like I'm watching something that was put together by someone who can't hold a single coherent thought in their head. Writing feels that way too. Good thing for the close captioning because I can't really hear a word the actors are saying. Still trying to figure out if Robert Blake is the devil or a demon because I know his character is up to no good. |
Brenda: Oh, yeah the faces and characters. They were all so good and funny. I remember this one skit where he was a vampire at the end and was just about to bite this young woman on the neck when he saw an old lady coming after. He said something to the camera then everything sped up and the sax. End of episode. |
