I saw this at the noon showing on July 4th, a week after release. At my favorite cinema, and I'm not sure if I've seen one of their theaters more full. After the end, the only overflowing trash container in the whole building was the one outside the Horizon screen.

I think I have not seen Yellowstone, and I have only seen a few, sporadic episodes of Longmire. So I won't be able to compare this film to them.
My best comparison reference would be Pale Rider, except that wraps up a conclusion in one showing.

This is the first of 4 planned parts. It is supposed to span 15 years. This one seems to span only a couple years. There are multiple story lines. Many different characters. Lots of conflict.

As he did with Dances With Wolves, Costner cast many Native Americans in the Indian roles. I don't recognize most of them, but many have numerous credits on IMDb. I assume their careers will get a lift.
Most of these characters are portrayed as noble, honest, wise - the exceptions are miscreants of the tribe. Much like in DWW.

The cast is wonderful. Many are veterans of prior Costner films.
From The Postman we have Will Patton, James Russo, Giovanni Ribisi.
From Yellowstone are Boo Arnold, Danny Huston, the Doc.
Michael Rooker from JFK.
Jeff Fahey from Wyatt Earp.
Jena Malone from Hatfields and McCoys.

Not with Costner, but Colin Cunningham was in Fahey's series The Marshall.
David O'Hara and Angus Macfadyen were both in Braveheart.

Costner seems to make it look like the West was full of gorgeous women everywhere.

Most of the characters seem straightforward, with the most mystery on Hayes Ellison - played by Kevin Costner.

If you don't need comedy, or an immediate conclusion, this would be a wonderful date night film.

Most of the storylines do not have a conclusion in this first Chapter. The final minutes seem to show scenes from the next Chapter.

Okay, I will be seeing this when it comes out on DVD. I love Kevin Costner and completely enjoyed "Dances with Wolves"

Jeff Fahey was also in "Silverado". Played a character by the name of Tyree, who along with Brian Dennehy's character knew Payden who was played by Kevin Kline.

I have been told that Part 2 has been pulled from the release schedule.

I was looking forward to it.
