The federal holiday we call Presidents Day, celebrated this year on Feb. 19, doesn't technically exist. It is officially George Washington’s birthday and has been a federal holiday since 1879, though it was moved to the third Monday in February in 1971 so that Americans could enjoy a three-day weekend in his honor.

Nor does Presidents Day have anything to do with Abraham Lincoln or the other two presidents born in February — Ronald Reagan and William Henry Harrison. The true meaning of this holiday — honoring the legacy of the nation's first president — seems to have been forgotten. Instead of great presidents, we are more likely to think of this as a three-day sales event on furnishings and appliances.

Though perhaps Washington would have understood the need for a good sale (his bed at Mount Vernon was crafted of expensive wood and featured mattresses stuffed with horsehair), surely he would agree that the holiday has lost its significance in the 21st century.

If we’re just using the day to trade in old mattresses for new ones, how about we also swap what has become a lackluster holiday for what could be a meaningful one? Election day.

If ever there were a patriotic reason for a day off, it’s to participate in democracy by voting in a local, state or federal election.

I don't disagree with the idea itself.

But it would have to be EVERY single employee at EVERY single job in America that got the day off.

If you make that a FEDERAL holiday, the only people guaranteed to get the day off are government employees. A lot of the union workers and and bankers too.

Most people aren't going to get it off.

What do you care anyway? After covid you turned election day into election month in most blue states.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Essential workers are essential. Unlikely they would get time off, and even if they did, they often work 12-hour shifts so voting hours would have to be extended.

Right.

I didn't even go into that just to keep my thoughts on it short.

I worked a job overnights were I was involved in a process that ultimately lead to the FED getting a large amount of its financial transactions from credit cards and individual transactions at banks all across the world at no later than 2AM every morning. Most days all went well, and until I got a promotion to the mainframe side of it which was quite a bit more work, aside from running some code somebody else with a huge brain wrote once per night, I was there as the babysitter and the first line of defense, having to wake other people up at 3AM if a problem happened that was above my paygrade.

If that data didn't reach the FED in full at 2AM every night, 24/7/365, the company was fined $50,000 per hour until it did arrive there in full.

Nobody there is getting that day off.

On the reverse side, try getting holidays off when you work a retail job that is open on holidays. I always got Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off, because I was never absent or late for a shift, I did anywhere from twice to 10 times the work of the other employees there on any given night and I straight up told them that I wouldn't be there on those days even if they scheduled me and if that resulted in my being fired that those were acceptable terms.

Most people don't have that luxury, because they are shitty employees and/or they have no spines.

And when you work in retail, you're getting sick a lot more than when you're working other jobs because part time employees get very little paid time off if they're lucky enough to get any, so whenever somebody has the flu they show up to work and get other people sick. If these people were "given" the day off without pay to go vote, 9 out of 10 of them would say no thanks I want to make money.

This article is just more pure bullshit coming from the Left. They know full well that for most people in the private sector this would NEVER work, but they're pushing to change the federal holiday from President's Day to Election day so that Government employees who always bump the numbers on 4-Day weekends for woke trash that normal people won't pay to see (ie: Democrat voters) will then have the day free to go vote while people who actually work for a living have to work all day before they vote.

And like I said before, they already gamed the system. In most states there is no "Election Day" anymore. It's "Election Week" or "Election Month". Especially with all the unsolicited mail-in fraud ballots that have 1,000 different ways to be falsely tallied up. I'm sure they can find time out of their month to sign their name on a paper ballot that was sent to their house unsolicited and find somebody with a car to put it in a lock box on the corner of a street or just give it to the ballot harvesters as they come knocking in the neighborhood.
