EVs Die Waiting To Charge In Chicago’s Longest Cold Snap In Years

Extraordinarily cold temperatures are not doing any favors for early EV adopters in The Windy City

Chicago is a major city that faces brutal winters every year, but its current cold snap is worse than the city has seen in a while, and it’s taking an extra toll on EV drivers. Electric vehicles lose some of their battery capacity in extreme cold weather, but with EV drivers scrambling to find available public chargers has pushed many to completely deplete their car’s batteries while waiting in line to charge.

Yeah. All that, except the part that it was the "longest cold snap in years".

Just last winter we had a worse one that lasted 10 days on the tail end of December and into the new year. The holidays were miserable here.

REUTERS: Ford cuts F-150 Lightning production as EV demand softens

https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/ford-reduce-f-150-lightning-12421122
7.html

Quote:

"We are taking advantage of our manufacturing flexibility to offer customers choices while balancing our growth and profitability," said Ford CEO Jim Farley in a statement.

The announcement is the latest sign of slowing demand for EV trucks. General Motors in October postponed the opening of a $4 billion electric truck plant in Michigan for a year.

...

The Dearborn automaker said Friday it would add a third crew and create nearly 900 jobs at its Michigan assembly plant to increase production of gas-powered Bronco SUVs and Ranger pickups.

...

Ford lost an estimated $36,000 on each of the 36,000 EVs it delivered to dealers in the third quarter, the company said in October, after announcing earlier it would slow the ramp-up of money-losing EVs, shifting investment to Ford's commercial vehicle unit and citing plans to quadruple sales of gas-electric hybrids over the next five years.

Uh huh. What demand?

All the self-fellating tech nerds and Leftist pigs already bought them, and that was your only consumer base.

Oh, and for anybody who can't math and doesn't know how a calculator works, that's $1,296,000,000 that Ford lost in the 3rd quarter on coal burning cars and trucks.

Ford is making Disney look profitable in 2023.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I have to hand it to Toyota: they never jumped on the bandwagon.

My former employer used to serve as a test bed for high-concept low/no carbon technologies, including methane- powered fuel cells, hydrogen -powered fuel cell cars, nat gas powered cars, EVs, etc. We had solar cells, a nat gas fueling station, charging stations, and a water hydrolyzer for hydrogen generation that fed a very high psi storage tanks for hydrogen fueled experimental vehicles and other applications.

And, oh! The problems they had, particularly with hydrogen fuel cells in vehicles. Turns out the hydrogen had to be pristine, absolutely no water or methanol in it. And hydrogen, being a sneaky molecule, is exceptionally hard to store at high pressure: it got in between the metal atoms/grains of the storage cylinder and embrittled the metal. So they tried coating the metal with polymer, but it turns out that high pressure hydrogen is also an EXCELLENT solvent, so it dissolved the polymer and caused it to flake off.

Needless to say, between the water, residual methanol (from halomethane from chlorine disinfection) and flakes of polymer, the fuels cells were no bueno.

AFA nat gas powered vehicles....well, that works better. But the nat gas has to be about 90% methane bc otherwise the engines will knock. And while "they" trust people to fuel their own cars with a liquid, it's different when you're dealing with a 400 psi gas. So, works well for buses, trash trucks and other commercial vehicles with private fueling stations, but maybe not ready yet for corner gas station.

Anyway, there are a lot of things that sound good in principle that are difficult or impossible in practice.

Yeah...

I don't think it's an impossible dream. But it's impossible right now.

The technology simply isn't there, and just creating these things is a net-negative on the environment.

The fact that I'm still driving around a mid-90's car that I've kept out of a landfill for 25 years is far more environmentally friendly than if I were to have bought an EV.

The prices for EVs have dropped sharply in the new market because all the flaws with the entire broken system can't be hidden by the media forever. There will also be zero used car market for them, as nobody is going to be buying them used when the battery can go out at any time and costs more than $25k to replace.

Do we even need to mention that insurance premiums are twice as much on EVs?

The Telegraph: Electric cars suffer ‘unsustainable’ depreciation in secondhand market

Electric cars lose as much as half of their value after just three years on the road, new figures show, as the rate of depreciation far outstrips conventional equivalents.

Research from Auto Trader said there were “unsustainable levels of depreciation” in the electric car market, with used prices of battery-powered vehicles dropping by 23pc in the last year alone.

Is it possible to get bored of being right all the time?

I think it is when you're dealing with a couple of nitwits who believe every lie the Media tells them.

Don't bother reading the above article if you actually want to know "Why".

I'm just posting this article here to show that PBS is actually acknowledging that this is an event that is happening, despite the fact they hate it.

Volvo’s stock surged 26% after announcing it would cease funding its electric vehicle subsidiary, Polestar Automotive.

This decision reflects a broader trend in the electric vehicle industry, with Renault canceling its electric-car unit IPO and Ford reducing production of its electric F-150 Lightning.

...

While Polestar’s CEO remains optimistic about the company’s future, its shares declined by 84% in 2023 due to the EV market slowdown.
