I have forgotten.

I need to renew my DL, and there is some STAR option, which would make it Federally compatible, like Visa or Flight Boarding compliant.

Anybody know if there are any disadvantages to it?

Well.. you're talking to a guy who doesn't like things like a massive barcode on the back of my ID that I couldn't even tell you what the hell it's for. In other words, I don't trust none of them and the less they invade the better in my eyes.

But I'm pretty sure that you don't have a choice if you want to drive. Am I wrong about that? Is Wisconsin making that optional still? You can't even get a driver's license in Indiana anymore without having given them the paperwork necessary to make your license REAL-ID compliant. Thank GWB for me.

Never mind... I just looked it up.

States don't have a say in the matter. You've got until May 7, 2025 to get it done. Since the states themselves are responsible for enforcing that, I don't believe that you're going to even have a choice when you renew, so you'd better bring your necessary paperwork with you.

Maybe your state will allow you not to get it right now if you bitch about it too much, but I wouldn't expect that ID to be valid for driving or voting after May 7th of next year if you go down that route.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I don't know how it works in other states, but in CA you have a choice: you can get "REAL ID", which is Federally-compliant (I think it requires a birth certificate and is required for air travel but not required to drive) or you can get the regular state driver's license.

Since I already have a passport, which would allow air travel AND travel outside the USA, I didn't want to go thru the hassle of getting REAL ID.

Thanks for posting that sigs. It made me look further into the matter...

DISREGARD EVERYTHING IN MY PREVIOUS POST, JSF.

So, when they say "full compliance" it means something totally different than "full compliance". Typical American Government, doesn't know what words mean.

There may be states that are FORCING full compliance, but even Indiana isn't one of them. You are correct that California doesn't currently. It doesn't appear that Wisconsin forces it either.

At least for right now they're saying that you can still drive a car AND vote with a non-compliant state ID. The only thing that you can't do without a compliant REAL ID is fly on any planes. Not just internationally, but domestic flights as well.

I'd love to say that there is a reason I got one, but that did happen some time back during my drinking days, and if there was a reason it's lost on me now. Maybe back when I was getting food stamps they were requiring it or something. I can't imagine any scenario where I would have willingly brought in a bunch of extra documentation to help them put together an even stronger identification card for me than was necessary given that I've never even been on a plane and I don't have any intention to. But when I got my license renewed last time I already had the star on it from the previous time I'd gotten a license... so I've had one for quite a while now.

So... I don't know, JSF. I've had one for years now, and I can't see any reason to regret having it. Other than the fact that it's impossible to "downgrade" it after you've gotten it. There's never been a situation in the 10 or so years that I've had one where I thought to myself "Damn! I wish I didn't get this thing."

I've seen three complaints about the REAL ID:

1. It "unfairly" targets illegals.

Tough shit.

2. It "consolidates Americans' personal information into a network of interlinking databases accessible to the federal government and bureaucrats throughout the 50 states and U.S. territories. This national mega-database would invite government snooping and be a goldmine for identity thieves."

Oh yeah? Snooping how, exactly? What information is in this "mega-database" that the government didn't already have on me from filing my taxes?

Got a credit card? Chances are much more likely than not that your information is already in the hands of identity thieves with all the massive data breaches that the credit card companies have admitted to over the years. Though still EXTREMELY illegal, I would imagine criminals would be much more apt to go after credit cards and medical records to get your info than to try to hack into the government databases since the penalties I'm sure are MUCH HARSHER for government hacking than they are for hacking businesses and individuals.

3. It "poses a security threat by mandating that all driver's licenses and ID cards have an unencrypted “machine-readable zone” that would contain personal information on Americans that could be easily “skimmed” by anybody with a barcode reader.

Once again, nothing that can't easily be done by criminals with the credit cards already in your wallet. If you're paranoid about that, get yourself a wallet with a Faraday cage and don't ever swipe your cards in stores or at ATM machines either.

Plus, the last two I mentioned were the big BOGEY MAN scare points brought up by the ACLU of NY, and sure enough at the end of their article on REAL ID...

https://www.nyclu.org/en/why-oppose-real-id-act

Quote:

The Real ID Act makes DMV's REAL immigration enforcement agencies. DMV agents will have to make complicated judgments about a person's lawful status in the Untied States. This is an inappropriate and dangerous function for state government. Regulating immigration is a federal responsibility. Moreover, restricting immigrants' access to driver's licenses is a bad public safety policy as it sends immigrants further into the shadows and keeps them distanced from public safety and law enforcement officials.

Yup... There it is.

They don't want the States responsible (or ABLE) to bust illegal alien invaders. They want everyone to sit helpless while the Federal Government that is charged with that duty welcomes all of the military aged male invaders with open arms.

The one thing I do agree with the ACLU of NY is this though...

Quote:

And it won't stop terrorists. Identity-based security is not an effective way to stop terrorism. Driver's licenses do not reveal evil intent, and Real ID will force many who may have valuable intelligence information further into the shadows.

Yup. It ain't going to stop shit. It wasn't designed to. It was just another means of consolidation of control through consolidation of our data, brought to you by GWB's "Patriot" Act.

The ACLU of NY also mentions the following:

A Real ID will become a REAL necessity for everyday life. The use of a Real ID driver's license will not be limited to boarding an airplane or entering federal buildings. The Bush administration has already stated that Real IDs will become necessary for “everyday transactions,” such as receiving government benefits, voting, or applying for a job. The private sector will also begin mandating a Real ID card for everyday purposes. Despite what the DHS claims, Real ID is a real national ID card.

Well... Two points here...

1. I don't know when that article was written since they didn't date it, but when you look at the State BMV/DMV websites, they all call it a NATIONAL ID CARD right now. So if DHS was lying about that in the early days of the Patriot Act, nobody seems to be trying to lie about it anymore.

2. And now I remember why I got the Real ID. I was applying for a Union job and they required a REAL ID as part of the documents you had to provide. So I didn't even get the Union job and I got myself a national ID out of it.

If you have no intention to fly a plane even locally anytime soon and really don't want to get one, you don't have to. If you do intend to make a flight after May 7th next year, you're going to need one so you might as well just get it. Otherwise, do what you want to do.

Thanks everybody.

Gotta get it by May 2025?
Maybe we will have a President by then.

?? Credit cards have my residential street address on them? I conjured they had my mailing address zip code.

They have my height, weight, eye and hair color? My organ donor class? My photo?

A crying shame DMV doesn't have my Birth Certificate - how can they even function without it?

If you think any of the above information about yourself is private, all I can say is I wish I lived in the world of blissful ignorance that you've managed to live in all this time.

Good for you, buddy.

It's not printed on the surface of your credit card, if that's what you're asking me. That would be stupid.

Quote:

Once upon a time, magnetic stripe cards were cutting-edge technology, but that era has long since passed. They replaced the “knuckle-buster” machines that created carbon copies of the raised numbers on the fronts of credit cards. The main problem with magnetic stripes is that they pose major security risks. The stripes include sensitive information such as the cardholder’s name, address, account number, expiration date and card verification value. The fatal flaw is that this information is static.

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/m/magnetic-stripe-card.asp

Quote:

How Magnetic Stripe Cards Are Hacked

Magnetic stripe cards have been targets for fraud since their introduction, in particular through a process known as skimming.

In skimming, criminals place an inconspicuous device called a skimmer on the card readers of gas pumps or ATMs. When someone inserts their card into that machine, the skimmer reads the information on the stripe and stores it for later retrieval by the criminals. That gives them all they need to create duplicate cards, which they can then use to run up charges on the person's credit card or drain the money from the bank account that's linked to a debit card.

The FBI estimates that skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion a year.

Gas Pump Skimmers:

ATM Skimmers:

Store POS Terminal Skimmers:

My real advice would be to NEVER use your debit card for anything other than an ATM and only worry about the ATM skimmers since you'd be using your debit card and your bank account isn't protected like credit cards are protected. When paying for gas, or in-store purchases, only use credit cards, or better yet cash. You need to be up on your credit card statements though because you do only have a certain window to be able to report fraud before you're on the hook for part or all of the fraudulent activity.

https://www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-cards/credit-card-fraud/

Quote:

The Fair Credit Billing Act states that you must report fraudulent charges within 60 days of receiving the billing statement containing the suspicious charge. This means that if you receive your credit card statement on the first of the month, you have 60 days from that date to report any potentially fraudulent charges. However, it’s a good idea to contact your credit card issuer as soon as you notice any unusual activity on your card — whether you’re reviewing your monthly statement or checking the transactions that recently posted to your online account.

Supposedly the chip cards are going to stop credit card fraud, but they won't. Magnetic skimmers won't work on the chips, but somebody will always find a way to get your money. And right now you've got a stripe on your chipped cards anyhow, since it's an expensive proposition as a business to upgrade all of your devices, and it's going to probably take a decade or two for chip readers to become the norm.

Quote:

?? Credit cards have my residential street address on them? I conjured they had my mailing address zip code.

No. They have your street address. At least that's what we're told. I wouldn't assume otherwise unless you have your own card reader that can tell you exactly what's on the stripe.

Quote:

They have my height, weight, eye and hair color? My organ donor class? My photo?

No. But your current non-REAL ID compliant driver's license already does. And it already has your birth date that is on your birth certificate as well.

My point wasn't that credit card companies have everything on you already. My point was that every single thing that you'd be trying to keep "private" by not getting a REAL ID is already known and warehoused in a database by SOMEBODY already. Unless your parents raised you out in the woods completely off grid and you've managed to stay off grid for your entire life, it's all out there already in a database. And here we are talking on the internet, so there you go.
