That's a problem here in this forum already.

When I ask "What are America's interests?" ... as I have from time to time... I think the reason why only a few people have attempted to answer that question is because most people's thoughts get stuck on "America??" America is a foreign concept to them, with no general collective interests. A concept only to be revived by TPTB to wind people up to confront a faux enemy.

They can spout chapter and verse about WOMEN's interests or BLACK's interests or LGBTQX's interests or ILLEGAL's interests, however. I find the juxtaposition instructive and also disheartening.

It's very similar to Germans, and Germany. They are STILL made to feel guilty for WWII, altho almost no one alive today participated in the war. And BTW, did you know that Germany is STILL paying reparations to Jews (but not to Russia, even tho far more Russians died in WWII than Jews). Who says Jews don't have a powerful lobby??

As painful (for some) to admit, you can't rewrite history, you can't provide justice for those who have been killed unless the killers are still alive to be punished, tearing down statues only makes us historically blind, and collective guilt is a dumb idea, especially for events that are so historically distant that everyone on the "shit list" had NOTHING to do with the event(s), not even at the great-grandparent level. And even if great-grandad fought on the "wrong" side, what is it to their descendants? Are great-grandchildren responsible for the sins of their fathers?

So, what is to be done?

What about those residential schools? What about Germany's history of making war against the rest of Europe? What about the British history of subjugating and impoverishing much of the world? What about the USA's history of genocide and slavery and of neo-colonialism against the rest of the world, and brutal exploitation of many European immigrants? The AFRICAN history of slavery? The INCAN/MAYAN/AZTEC history of slavery? The Mongol invasion of ... everywhere Eurasian? The Armenian genocide? The Spanish and Portuguese conquest of S and Central America? (And BTW, don't you just love how Hispanics take on the mantle of "oppressed native" even tho they genocided much of the indigneous peoples?)

Is any justice to be had?

IMHO the answer is a resounding NO. The reason is because IT IS HISTORY. You can't change history. We can be horrified at inhumanity and grieve for the unjustly killed. We might even burn for vengeance. But you can't punish the wicked dead. It's in the past, and all of the participants are long-dead and buried.

What we CAN do is learn from it, and correct our CURRENT behavior.
