Federal aviation regulators are ordering United Airlines to step up inspections of all Boeing 777s equipped with the type of engine that suffered a catastrophic failure over Denver on Saturday. United said it is temporarily removing those aircraft from service.

Another aircraft with a Pratt & Whitney engine was grounded on Saturday: A cargo-carrying Boeing 747's engine failed in the Netherlands. It, too, was powered by a PW4000.

Countries restrict planes with the same engine

Boeing recommended suspending operations of all Boeing 777 aircraft with the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines, and several countries have since banned, grounded or opened investigations into planes with the same engine.

United said Sunday it would immediately pull 24 planes from flying "out of an abundance of caution." The company said its move was voluntary and temporary and should disrupt only "a small number of customers."

The United Kingdom said Monday it will temporarily ban Boeing 777s with PW4000 engines from entering UK airspace. Also on Monday, Japan ordered all domestic airlines to halt all Boeing 777s with the same engines, which impacts a combined 32 aircraft.

South Korea's Asiana Airlines has also grounded its fleet of Boeing 777 planes, which are also powered by PW4000 engines.

At first I was more impressed that the fuselage, fuels tanks, passenger cabin were not sliced open by the flying blades of the engine - although they w3ere keeping details quiet.

But with these hollow blade design, maybe that kept them from detaching.

The percent likeliood that the flying blades would pierce the fuselage so close by, compared to some random spot spread over 100 sq miles on the ground is much greater.

Russian media report that a Boeing 777 plane made an emergency landing in Moscow in the early hours of Friday after the pilot reported a problem with the engine.

The Interfax news agency cited an anonymous source saying that the pilot on the flight from Hong Kong to Madrid reported a failure of one of the left engine control channels and requested an emergency landing at the Moscow Sheremetyevo airport.

The plane carrying both cargo and passengers landed safely and no one was injured, the report said.

Earlier this month, a Boeing 777 operated by United Airlines had to make an emergency landing in Denver after one of its engines blew apart, spewing huge chunks of wreckage that landed in neighborhoods and sports fields.

The investigation is focusing on a fan blade that appeared to be weakened by wear and tear, a development reminiscent of a fatal failure on board another plane in 2018.
