Quote:

First, the wave has crested. At 1 p.m. April 7, the COVID-19 arrivals slowed down. It was a discrete, noticeable event. Stretchers became available by 5 p.m., and the number of arriving COVID-19 patients dropped below the number discharged, transferred or deceased.

This was striking, because the community I serve is poor. Some are homeless. Most work in “essential,” low-paying jobs, where distancing isn’t easy. Nevertheless, the wave passed over us, peaked and subsided. The way this transpired tells me the ebb and flow had more to do with the natural course of the outbreak than it did with the lockdown.

Second, I worry about non-coronavirus care. While the inpatient units remain busy with sick COVID-19 patients, our ER has been quiet for more than a week. We usually average 240 patients a day. For the last week, we averaged fewer than 100. That means our patients in this diverse, low-income community are afraid to come to the ER for non-COVID care.

Gotham-wide, the number of 911 ambulance runs declined to 3,320 on April 18, down from a peak of 6,527 on March 30, according to New York Fire Department data. The current nadir is significantly below the average.

A large share of those staying home surely have emergency medical and surgical conditions not related to the novel coronavirus. The growing numbers dying at home during this crisis must include fatal myocardial infarctions, asthma exacerbations, bacterial infections and strokes.

Meanwhile, our pediatric volume in the ER has practically disappeared. Visits to primary-care pediatricians are also down, with vaccine schedules falling behind. Everyone seems to be avoiding the health system — an important and unfortunate consequence of the stay-at-home strategy.

Third, inordinate fear misguides the public response. While COVID-19 is serious, fear of it is being over-amplified. The public needs to understand that the vast majority of infected people do quite well.

Finally, COVID-19 is more prevalent than we think. Many New Yorkers already have the COVID-19 infection, whether they are aware of it or not. As of today, over 43 percent of those tested are positive in The Bronx. We are developing a significant degree of natural herd immunity. Distancing works, but I am skeptical that it is playing as predominant a role as many think.

Queue up dumb responses from people who are wearing blinders to literally everything else happening (or now not happening) in the world in 3... 2... 1...

He's writing SPECIFICALLY about NYC.

But even if he did...

Opening sentence: "I’m an emergency physician at St. Barnabas Hospital in The Bronx ..." in NYC.

"I have been in the ER every day these last few weeks ..." in NYC.

"COVID-19 has been the worst health care disaster of my 30-year career ..." in NYC.

"From mid-March through mid-April, the ER staff at St. Barnabas ... " in NYC.

"Then came the wave of critically ill patients in numbers none of us had ever seen. This lasted for two weeks ..." in NYC.

"First, the wave has crested ..." in NYC.

"Gotham-wide, the number of 911 ambulance runs declined to 3,320 on April 18, down from a peak of 6,527 on March 30, according to New York Fire Department data ... " in NYC.

"Visits to primary-care pediatricians are also down ..." in NYC.

... and so on.

EVERYTHING he writes about happened IN NYC. EVERYTHING he's concerned about is true of NYC. Is he writing about Atlanta, Georgia? Miami, Florida? Portland, Oregon?

No. He has no clue about what's going on in those cities or anywhere else.

The question is - why do YOU want to apply his writings to anywhere else? Especially since you haven't shown how his observations are true anywhere else.

He's writing about his own circumstances in NYC. No shit. He's not a doctor in Georgia.

But the article implies heavily that the entire country should be opened BECAUSE of what he's experienced and what the statistics are there. Not just NYC.

Read it again, because for one reason or another this is just another example of a serious reading comprehension failure on your part.

SIX, as YOU YOURSELF have posted many times, the situation IN NYC DOES NOT APPLY ANYWHERE ELSE.

The reefer trucks full of bodies in NYC? Does not apply to anywhere else.
The mass graves in NYC? Does not apply anywhere else.
The overwhelmed NYC hospitals? Does not apply anywhere else.
The crowding and congestion in NYC, and the unavoidability of passing along the infection? Does not apply anywhere else.

Those were your own ideas and your own posts. You can't limit the experience of NYC to deny how awful the sitation could become elsewhere because it's NYC and that's, like, a foreign country or something, so very differrent , and then use NYC as a positive example to push your POV.

The rate of past infections (21%) in NYC? Does not apply anywhere else
Where NYC is on the infection curve? Does not apply anywhere else

Well, maybe you can, but it would be disingenuous.

There is another instance of two doctors in Bakerfield who are urging a reopening. I'm sure you'll bump into them, SIX, in your quest to grasp any straw that supports your point.

But I would classily their misuse of data as criminally misleading. They cite, over and over again, the number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 as the reason to open up.

However, what they fail to mention is that those numbers are biased high because, as we know the criteria for being tested for Covid was extremely limited ... basically, for the longest time you had to be in hospital with Covid-like symptoms in order to be tested. That sampling would be called "highly enriched". Whatever figures you get out of that are not at all like the general population.

The serology tests show that, in NYC, 21% of people had Covid-19. In two counties in CA, both of which could be considered "high risk" since they had considerable number of people flying in from China, that figure is about 4%. Just 4%. Not any higher.

*****

Another mileading statement that SIX has made over and over again is that this virus is a "widdle cold". Colds come, and colds go, but no "cold" EVER did this to death rates.

*****

ANOTHER misleading statement that SIX made is that millions would die of starvation because the "free shit" that fragile nations get from the west would come to a grinding halt because of the west's response to Covid, driven by karens. It's a complex statement, and every part of it is wrong, as far as I can tell, starting with the idea that poor nations get "free shit" from the west and forward from that.
http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=63473&p=29

*****

Another ridiculous position that SIX takes is that mask-wearing shouldn't be mandated.
It's a major precaution that can help states open up their economies safely, but apparently SIX feels health precautions are an infringement on his liberty. He'd rather spread the virus and see a lot of "weak" and "old" people die. He said so himself. Many times.

*****

Almost everything that SIX has posted about Covid-19 is counterfactual, ugly, and selfish.

Thanks for that, SIX!

His point was it wasn't that bad in NYC.

It really wasn't.

It really, really, really wasn't.

And among those deaths, a great deal... well over 25% of them were from old folks homes.

It would spread more naturally and less quickly nearly anywhere else in the country than it did in NYC. NYC is the hub where most of the flights from other countries come in and we couldn't ban them in time because the Legacy Media was too busy calling Trump racist for suggesting it. NYC hardly has any of its population driving cars and instead sharing subways and buses to commute with everybody packed in together like sardines. NYC has a ton of buildings going to the sky with crowded elevators taking everybody up to it.

Open shit back up. Build up herd immunity by letting it spread naturally. Make sure that old people are wearing masks. Make sure anybody visiting old people in homes are wearing masks and wash their hands before the visits. Make sure everybody in hospitals are wearing masks.

It's fine to take preventative measures in instances that warrant it. But the time for overreaction is over. If they don't start opening things back up, civil unrest will spread faster than the virus.

And what are you going to do when those unemployment checks run out, BTW? Are we just going to keep extending them forever? Those stimulus checks were already spent the second they went out.

You might have set yourself up pretty nice to wait everything out in retirement, but that's a Boomer thing that the generations after you will never be able to do. Most people need to work to eat and don't get to sit on their ass waiting to die with money in the bank.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

There's not one single example in the letter that indicates he's talking abut the entire country.

...The Bronx ... ER staff at St. Barnabas ... in the ER and throughout the hospital ...
First, the wave has crested ... At 1 p.m. April 7, the COVID-19 arrivals slowed down ...
Gotham-wide, the number of 911 ambulance runs declined ... visits to primary-care pediatricians are also down ... COVID-19 is more prevalent than we think. Many New Yorkers already have the COVID-19 infection ...

Every single metric he gives as a reason comes from NYC.

Just a bit of humor - his thinking about how important routine medical visits are reminds me a lot of when surgeons went on strike in western New York. "That'll teach THEM how important we are!" they thought. Death rates went down significantly. Yep, it sure did teach people a lesson, just not the one the surgeons were thinking.

Oh boo hoo. Spare me the crocodile tears, SIX. You can't possibly think that anyone here believes that you're worried about people when you've posted prolly a dozen times that you'd like to see the old and "weak" die, and you wouldn't think Covid-19 was a problem until almost one out of three Americans died. So stop spewing your hypocrisy here for all to see.

HOW can we get thru this time in better shape? Well, farmers are plowing under crops, dumping milk, and euthanizing animals. Meanwhile, food banks are begging for food?

Why to we have this disconnect? Is it because the Fed and the WH are focusing all of their $$$ on saving the asses of the bankers, hedge fund managers, and rich greedy oilmen?

And OF COURSE, we have to somehow open up the economy again, the question is: HOW? HOW can we start working and producing again without HAVING to risk death, or bringing it home to your family? You won't even consider mask-wearing, which shows your TRUE motives more than anything else: You want people to die.

I don't know why you're so twisted on this topic. I said that you really should clarify FOR YOURSELF what your goals are. You want people to die, seems to be your main goal. Maybe you're aiming for some genetic cleansing. Maybe you just want the old folks - who you seem to resent- to pop off. Prove me wrong.

Testing is important work, but it should happen in parallel to the immediate resuscitation of the economy and getting people back to work.

At present, the testing is imperfect. We can’t wait months. We must protect the vulnerable and mitigate without destroying the economy.

Meanwhile, in reality...

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2020/04/30/rigid_lockdowns_
imperil_public_health_im_in_a_position_to_know_143071.html

Quote:

The great irony of our (nearly) nationwide lockdown is that measures taken to protect us may actually be harming the nation’s public health. In March, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that health care providers postpone “elective” procedures to free up resources to treat coronavirus patients. Governors have also ordered doctors to reschedule “non-essential” appointments. Many doctors have advised patients with serious illnesses to forgo taking immunity suppressing drugs for fear that they might contract COVID-19. And the sanctimonious “listen to the experts” crowd will shout down anyone who dares to question the prevailing “stay home” wisdom. But I know from personal experience how important it is to address medical problems quickly before they get worse.

Thousands or perhaps even millions of Americans have untreated and undiagnosed medical conditions right now that aren’t being addressed because of our singular focus on mitigating COVID-19. The former chief of neuroradiology at the Stanford University Medical Center wrote a recent op-ed in The Hill warning that “critical health care for millions of Americans is being ignored and people are dying to accommodate ‘potential’ COVID-19 patients and for fear of spreading the disease.” And the CEO of the Cleveland Clinic told The New York Times that they’ve seen a “dramatic decline in people seeking care for heart attacks, strokes, or new cancers.”

Meanwhile, New York City has more fatalities than 41 states combined and, as of April 29, 20 states had fewer than 200 COVID-19 deaths and seven others had fewer than 300. Yet in most of these states where coronavirus has taken a more modest death toll, many hospitals are like ghost towns. Even once our policymakers give us the green light to see our doctors again, some, perhaps many, Americans will be afraid to return to hospitals and clinics, while others may find long delays as clinics struggle to cope with appointment backlogs. And what about the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs and their health insurance and can’t afford to address their medical problems?

But at least you don't have a runny nose.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

They make their profits on elective surgery, that's the butter on their bread. So I wouldn't be surprised if there was more than a bit of conflict of interest on the topic,

Meanwhile, millions of Americans provably have undiagnosed medical conditions because of lack of health insurance.

Yanno, I would have thought that this pandemic would spur people to insist on a better healthcare system, better personal physical and financial preparation for bad times*, and better government preparation and response.

*Look at Utah. Those Mormons are all about food security and emergency response. Mormons are supposed to keep a year's-worth of food in their homes. As an entity, they respond to international disaster like nobody's business ... they were in Haiti with food and aid a day before the Red Cross, for chrissake.

Why is food rotting in the fields? Because the "supply chain" is broken? Then where is the national guard, or the army, arranging for transport?

Where are all of those masks that are required to keep people safe so they can go back to work?

Where is that health insurance that would let people be tested for Covid without being stuck with a crippling medical bill, much less treated in hospital?

Where are the banks with loan moratoria, and low-cost recovery loans?

Instead, there's you: bitching and whining and carrying on like a two-year-old and fingerpointing at people who didn't start the problem and aren't making it worse.

I expected some out of the box thinking from you, maybe some actual solutions, but instead you drove into that "identity politics" ditch that you keep whining about, just like WISHY. You've identified the "old" and "weak" as the problem instead of the victims, and all you want is for them to die so you can get some of their (perceived) wealth.

I'm done discussing this topic with you. You have a point: You can't keep a nation on lockdown forever. But you've become like the worst of SECOND and WISHY on the topic: you've ruined your credibility by blatantly denying reality, making up shit, name-calling, and engaging in identity politics.

If you have something REAL and honest and useful to say, let me know!

Funny, I was thinking "Well, don't we have a leader around here who COULD do some of those things??"

Oh, that's right...we've got one that whines and bitches and carries on like a two year old, and who only signed up to make bank out of being in the office...

Shame, that...

The problem, WISHY, is that "we" are definitely NOT all in this together.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, is weaponizing this pandemic for their own "tribe".

So it becomes the young v the old. Midwesterners v bicoastals. Democrats v Republicans.

Women v men. (Gee, who was pushing THAT meme? And you're doing it AGAIN. Instead of trying to figure out how to unite people, there you are: driving people apart.)

The only people who AREN'T complaining are the bankers, who quietly took the "liquidity" that The Fed showered on them, and who went away to silently count their money. (Speaking of "golden showers ....")

I just keep wondering what planet you live on, 'cause it AIN'T THIS ONE.

People are ALWAYS TRIBAL. ALWAYS. This kinda thing just shows humans for what they are. >>>>>>>>> AND ALWAYS WILL BE<<<<<<<<<<<<

I guess your tribe is the kind that don't like hard facts and truth?? Where is pointing out that woman and kids are getting extra beat up a wrong thing to mention or care about??

The only people who DON'T want that mentioned are idiots like 6ix who think it's a personal reflection on him and can't separate out people who are violent from the rest of the population because all he sees is brotherhood of dicks..

Gotta stick together with the other violent twits so you can pretend you are the saviors of the world... .

WE BELONG TO THE SAME TRIBE, WISHY. IT'S CALLED "AMERICAN".

Once upon a time, it meant something. It has been the genius of the globalists to divide us into such narrow, pointless, selfish, self-defeating sub-tribes that we can no longer band together to work for our COMMON future .... heck, you can't even IMAGINE A COMMON future ... all we can seem to manage is bickering over scraps that fall off the elite's tables.

WHY DID I HAVE TO COME UP WITH THESE IDEAS ON HOW TO GET THRU THESE HARD TIMES AND HOW TO COME OUT BETTER? WHY DIDN'T YOU? OR SIX? OR SECOND? OR CC? I'M SUPPOSED TO BE THE "RUSSIAN TROLL", REMEMBER?

I HAVE BEEN ASKING ... FOR YEARS"WHAT ARE AMERICA'S INTERESTS"

I HAVE BEEN SUGGESTING FOR YEARS THAT WE NEED TO MANUFACTURE IN AMERICA AGAIN, REGIONALLY AND REDUDANTLY, THAT CENTRALIZED PRODUCTION, JUST-IN-TIME DELIVERY, AND LONG FRAGILE SUPPLY LINES ARE NOT RESISTANT TO EMERGENCY.

I HAVE BEEN POSTING FOR YEARS WE NEED TO HAVE SURPLUS THAT EVERY HOME, EVERY CITY, AND EVERY REGION HAVE SOME EXTRA ON-HAND: FOOD. WATER. MEDICINE. TO BE ABLE TO WITHSTAND HURRICANES, EARTHQUAKES, AND OTHER LARGE EMERGENCIES.

THAT BANKS BE REQUIRED TO BE 100% CAPITALIZED AND THAT THE FED - THE BIGGEST DRIVER OF INEQULITY IN THE USA- NOT BE ALLOWED TO MAKE UP MONEY FROM NOTHING, SO IT CAN HAND ITOUT TO ITS FRIENDS.

THAT WE NEED TO REDUCE OUR MILITARY PRESENCE ABROAD, REDUCE OUR MILITARY BUDGET, AND FOCUS ON IMPROVING HEALTHCARE.

THAT WE HAVE UNMET NEEDS - HOUSING, MEDICAL CARE, ENVIRONMENTAL REHABILITATION, INFRASTRUCTURE - ENOUGH TO CREATE MEANINGINFUL JOBS FOR EVERYONE WHO CAN WORK.

The coronavirus didn't create all of our weaknesses, it just exposed them. EVERY PRESIDENT HAS BEEN COMPLICIT IN DESTROYING AMERICA BY CATERING TO THE WEALTHY TRANSNATIONALS. Meanwhile, the people who participated in America's destruction were you, SECOND, THUGR, and CC.

Good on you! /snark

And now JACK with his "ok boomer" meme.

How many generations do they represent? JACK looks at ME and thinks I made the world the way it is ... by being, yanno, a Karen, or maybe a boomer. SECOND thinks it was republicans that made the entire planet the way it is. And in between, THUGGER thinks it was commies and commie trolls. Who knows what WISHI thinks, hers is the flying fickle finger of blame that acts like a weathervane.

Nobody here has the power to do any of that, though SECOND - according to his accounts - comes closest.

Nobody here owns the global company town we're all living in, or makes its rules. No one generation does, no one country, and no one political party.

When the US Civil War started, nobody alive had designed the system of slavery. One side, with millions of enthusiastic followers benefiting from slavery, wanted to keep the system the same as it had been for hundreds of years. And the other side was afraid and uncertain about tearing the system down, not knowing how much blood would be spilled. Today there are parallels to that time. One side is enthusiastic about the kind of Capitalism that treats half of Americans like slaves and the other side is afraid to fix the system because it will probably become a war over Medicare-for-All and carbon dioxide emissions and raising the minimum wage.

I once was a designer of safety shutdown systems at petrochemical plants. My job was to find and design systems to prevent all disasters that can be controlled. Some disasters weren't controllable: airplane crash into the refinery, but excluding things like that, I did not take half measures, like ordinary people do, assuming that the worst can't happen.

I have seen the worst happen several times in war and peace. I have stood on the edge of craters where there had been refineries or where bombs from B-52s fell thanks to Nixon. Since that time, nobody has ever died at any place I designed. There has never been another disaster in anything I've had control of.

I'm highly motivated and nearly every Republican I know, except the rich ones, are not. The poorer Republicans I know act like the Confederates before the Civil War started getting really vicious; the Confederates assumed they were right with God, History and the Bible on their side, and thus victory would be easy and slavery would be preserved. Then the easy war the Confederates started began to blow up and wreck the South. If the Confederates had more sense, they would have freed their slaves without going to war. If today's Republicans had more sense, they'd pass Medicare-for-All and raise the minimum wage to a living wage and reduce green house gases rather than go to war with the Democrats. The Democrats don't want that fight to the death, and are afraid of it, but that's what it is going to take to change the Republican Party.

There is NO fixing the Rethuglican party. Who DIDN'T guess that they would storm places with guns rather than be supportive for a couple months?? Who COULDN'T have foreseen that they would still go to church and kill others than stay home and not be attention whores for a couple months??

My weekend job, that I started in HS, was EKG technician. That's where I saw the vast, vast majority of people die out of the hundreds of deaths I witnessed.

Of course time doesn't give us any do-overs. But while some situations like codes are definitely things you need to put 100% of your thoughts and efforts into becasue they really are life and death matters ... not every situation is NOW OR NEVER! DO OR DIE! LIFE OR DEATH! KILL OR BE KILLED! BLACK OR WHITE! SUBMIT OR REVOLT! DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN! (...heh heh heh ..)

In this situation both parties have inexorably brought us where we are. And armed revolution isn't the only answer.

And imo, democrats aren't so much afraid of civil war, as they were bought-out decades ago.

Let me just bring up your post about being willing to kill everyone but 100 people on the planet in order to 'save' them from ... I forget ... communism or fascism or something you latched onto that day. Not only did you post it, you quadrupled down on it and also made it part of your sign-off for a while.

I'm bringing it up because I don't believe that all 7B - 100 fit the categories you've now listed above.

Your parsing of who you're agin' changes from day to day, and if you have any criteria at all, they don't seem stable.

I never said I did - I just pointed out that people always have the option of suicide, but they should be able to decide that for themselves.

I know you're not THAT stupid, WISHY.

Obviously, our government's response ... it's laws and policies ... affect us all.

Unlike, say, the domestic laws and policies and economics of Russia, which affect us not in the least.

It's amazing how confused people get about whether we're Russia or the USA!

And really, most of us need the same things: A safe place to sleep, nutritious food, clean water, ability to provide for ourselves and our families doing productive work, control over our individual and collective futures, support in times of illness or disability, equality before the law and in the marketplace.

Seems like we should be able to agree on about 95%, and not get sidetracked over stupid things like Who is more disadvantaged ... white males or trangender females or blacks? or let's kill everyone that disagrees with how I want the world to work

I mean, we all want equality, right?
All of this bickering isn't about finding solutions, it's abut gaining priviledge. It's not that you want to be treated as well as a man, or a white, or a hetero, you want to be treated better.
