I cannot confirm that any of these fit the bill, but I am hoping others who know will have input.

I will try to annotate those which are confirmed.

I'm hoping to also keep the list to just quality film, ones I would recommend to anybody.

Although I hope this is a helpful list, I also don't mind if it is discussion regarding the topic.

Edge Of Tomorrow (Live Die Repeat) - one scene. Plus training Cage.

Other suggestions from me:

Arrival: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner

Oblivion: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman.

The Quiet Place: Emily Blunt.

Compiled List:
Confirmed:
Oblivion (Tom Cruise)
Arrival (Amy Adams)

Suggestions:
eXistenz

Ink

Moon

Inception

Ex-Machina

Imitation Game

Munich

Debt

Super-8

In Bruges

Hot Fuzz

Galaxy Quest - I loved this film, but The Chompers and all the lazer weapons doesn't strike me as fitting in here.

eXistenZ was awesome despite the low budget. I doubt very much that any scenes in that movie would cause a seizure.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120907/

Probably could say the same about Ink (2009). Even with the insanely low budget of of somewhere around $200,000, special effects had come quite a ways and got cheaper. It's possible there might be a scene or two in there that could. I still doubt it though.

I'll add suggestions Ex-Machina, and Imitation Games (True Science, not science fiction).

I wish I could recall that Munich, The Debt, and Super 8 were all trigger-free. But I'm not certain. Can somebody else weigh in on those?

I think Inception would fit.

In Bruges and Hot Fuzz were not sci-fi, but were hilarious.

I liked Enemy Mine when I was a kid. I'm sure that would fit the criteria. Not sure how well it aged though.

I've seen "Arrival" and "Oblivion" and those were both fine for me. Not seen the other film.

You can watch it now for free on YouTube if you have no other way of streaming movies. I just watched it the other day.

Even better, if you watch it on a computer with adblock enabled, you don't even have to be interrupted with commercials.

I didn't look into the other free movies they've got, but I'm assuming there's more.

Oblivion (2013) with Tom Cruise.

I didn't even know this movie existed until I watched it with my old man and loved it.

Not as good as Edge of Tomorrow, but since we haven't gotten a sequel to that yet, this was the next best thing.

No seizure worries with this one. It's much slower paced. Not exactly a movie that forces your brain into overdrive or anything, but surprisingly low key for a flick with a $120 Million budget. I'd watch this 100 times before I ever watched Tomorrow War again.

I don't think I agree.
Lots of battle scenes, sharp lights flashing in darkness, explosions in darkness.
I loved the film, but would be wary of sending folk to it with seizure sensitivities.

If you have a seizure watching this flick that really sucks to have to hide your eyes from literally everything. You'd better just go and throw your TV out and never go to anybody's house that has a TV then.

I happen to like movies even though I have a seizure disorder. It just means that I have to know what the film is about before I think about watching it.

DREAMTROVE

I haven't posted to this thread because I don't have epilepsy and I only knew three in my life, one when I was a little kid, one growing up who shot himself, and one in college, who went off to life her life somewhere else and haven't thought about it since. I am annoyed by the flashing lights though, they give me a headache.

I did have a seizure disorder, induced in me by the psychopharmatorture society. I had trouble watching flashy things then, but was tested for epilepsy and found not to have it. (the test was torture designed to kill an epileptic, wtf) still, they still give me headaches.

Generally I think the slower paced sci-fi are less flashy, but I don't know if that's a solid rule

The most obviously epileptic torture movie I saw recently was Escape Room. It was way past Silent Hill levels of flashy. Like any kind of cheap gimmicky horror tends to be. By contrast, I think some of the more sedated horror isn't, like Conjuring. But sci fi. hmm. I know 28 days later gets very hyper, is it epileptic? probably. it's not a stress reducer that's for sure. Ender's Game breaks my above rule definitely. it's mostly slow paced but the space battles are pretty flashy

IDK what's the measure here? flashing on screen? or overall tension level?

Count all my thoughts as pretty useless. Okay, trying now

Maggie wasn't hyper at all. or flashy. save a few zeking out moments she has.

I mean for calm slow burn I like Existenz, a nice suggestion, Another as I said, Thirteenth Floor

12 monkeys again is not flashy, there are some nice apocalyptic not flashy

Grabbers is a nice "sci-fi" horror with very limited sci-fi, and limited horror, mostly a comedy.

I feel I could pick out a good list if I were looking at all films in a list but my brain is falling out right now

It's not a lack of empathy. It's calling the idea that Oblivion should be something avoided by people with seizure disorders ridiculous.

You'd be fine watching this one, Brenda.

I'll have to look it up again as I am not sure now if I have seen "Oblivion" or not.

ETA: I just looked it up and I have seen it. Wasn't too keen on it but I did see it after you first recommended it Jack.

I picked up a copy of the "Jumanji: The Next Level" because someone recommended it. This one has The Rock in it. I think there could be some scenes in it that I will have some problems with. Just closing my eyes to them.

Wow. We REALLY crossed our wires here. I feel that's probably mostly my mistake.

I saw Oblivion only like a month ago, so it wasn't me that recommended it before you watched it.

It looks like Oblivion was mentioned right here in this thread a LONG time before I saw it. You posted back in December of 2019 that you saw it and it didn't cause any problems for you.

The movie that I recommended yous see that you were going to check out was Virtuosity in the Garden thread.

Did you ever see that one?

Sorry... It's been ages since I've seen it so I can't say for sure if it's seizure-safe or not. It DID come out at a time where nobody was worried about that and a lot of the video games that came out had tons of screen flashes that they don't put in games anymore, so you should probably at least be on guard for it.

Okay, thought I went back up thread to see. I must have read wrong.

I do remember you recommending Virtuosity. I have to find it on YouTube as I don't think my library has a copy of it any more.

Like I said I know enough about my seizure disorder to know what to watch out for in certain movies.

I used to love video games and I know now if I get my hands on one I have to be very careful of how long I play them. Bought myself one at Christmas, a hand held version of something I used to play in high school. It's called "Galaga." I don't play it much, it mostly sits on the kitchen table but once in a while in the evening before bed I will. Just for a few minutes.

I had it for the Atari 7800 when I was a kid.

Got another Tom Cruise one here...

Have you seen Vanilla Sky, Brenda?

I'd only ever caught bits and pieces of it on cable back in the early 2000's, which is not the way to watch this movie.

I just saw it with my old man the other day and I thought it was great.

I told him that we've got to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with Jim Carey and Kate Winslet next, because whoever made that movie was definitely a fan of Vanilla Sky.

(Wow. I just searched for both of them on the-numbers and I'm shocked at how little Eternal Sunshine made. They're both in the same bucket of VERY STRANGE movies that aren't for everyone, but it would appear that even back in 2004 Jim Carey was nowhere near the box office draw that Tom Cruise was for that movie to have only gotten $72 Million worldwide compared to Vanilla Sky's $202 Million.)

Let me know what you think if you see it.

My old man has always been a huge Tom Cruise fan, and mix sci-fi with Cruise and it's just about the best thing in the world to him. After watching it with him last week I really can't believe that I had never gotten around to seeing it myself. I actually didn't even know it was considered science fiction. Maybe the name turned me off or something? I probably thought it was a romance movie.

As much as we liked it though, I don't want to pump it up TOO much for you. My tastes are surely a little stranger than the mainstream, with a love for David Lynch flicks and movies like Donnie Darko. I wouldn't classify this movie exactly in those styles however, because you will walk away from the movie knowing exactly what happened with a great payoff, unlike Lynch and Darko movies which you can watch 100 times and still not come any closer to the truth of what the movie was even about.

Me personally, I haven't decided if I like Vanilla Sky more or less because of that.

Oh... And Kurt Russel is in it too.
