In earlier work, published in December, the researchers noted several gene alterations in the sperm of men who smoke marijuana. The current study homed in on specific genes, notably one called Discs-Large Associated Protein 2, or DLGAP2. This gene is involved in transmitting neuron signals in the brain and has been strongly implicated in autism, as well as schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Now that they mention it, I know two guys that smoked pot a lot and they both have a schizophrenic kid. One has TWO.

Yeah, the planet REALLY IS going to be all autistic soon.

I think I just changed my mind about how "harmless" Mary Jane is.

In one study researchers at Washington State University in Pullman showed rat pups born to mothers exposed to high amounts of cannabis vapor during pregnancy had trouble with cognitive flexibility. Twice a day the scientists filled the pregnant rats’ containers with marijuana vapor from an e-cigarette, elevating levels of the psychoactive chemical THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in the rats’ blood to roughly the human equivalent of smoking a joint. After the pups grew up the researchers trained them on a task that measured their ability to think flexibly and learn new rules. The young rats first learned to follow a light cue to push one of two levers in order to receive a sugary treat. The next day, pushing only the left lever would deliver the reward, regardless of which side the light had been on.

The rats exposed to cannabis in utero learned the first rule (following the light cue) without a problem, but they took significantly longer to learn the new rule (pushing the left lever) than did rats not exposed to the drug. The cannabis-exposed rats also made many more mistakes on the second day. They would respond correctly for a couple rounds, making it seem like they knew the new rule, but then they would press the wrong lever again. “It was like something wasn’t really clicking with them,” says Ryan McLaughlin

Have at it regardless. Don't listen to people who try to push their authoritarianism on you. Drug tests are easy to pass, and ironically people who have never done any drugs and are worried about what you're going to pop out have kids with problems of their own.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

That you would be narcissistic enough to ignore that you could intentionally cause a child to be schizophrenic and force that child to deal with that the rest of it's life...doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Coming from someone who passes the buck about his own actions every minute of every day... that's still pretty epic shithead behavior, though.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Considering that ASD affects (at a minimum) 1/68 US children, anybody should pause before having children. 'Cause life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.

Yeah. I don't do that.

I've taken responsibility for my own actions, which is why I'm actually getting a lot of things done.

I'm curious though, why you decided it was a good idea to have kids when you knew full well that you had genetic defects of your own on record and your husband needed pills prescribed to him to cope with life.

That wasn't fair to your daughter who is disadvantaged, is it?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

That might be too snarky.
But it really is encouraging to see some folk waking up in this day and age.

Um, nice try, but NO... we did not know we had any genetic issues other than seasonal allergies when we got married. He wasn't diagnosed with ASD until several years after she was born, and I had never even heard the term Dyspraxic before 2009.

The ASD actually isn't the problem, it was being raised by Christofascist Narcissistic parents that he needs the pills for. Narcissists can ruin the lives of those around them, no joke.

As for being "disadvantaged" she is far less so than YOU. She's HAD treatment and assistance, and is still a good 20 IQ points ahead of you. I have every confidence she'll do just fine, thanks

It's hilarious that you are anti-weed and anti-pills, but you sit around and drink shit that's frying your liver and general DNA faster than any thing else you could do.

Here's to that raging case of cirrhosis you're brewing up

I doubt very much most claims anybody has when they say they or somebody they know has 2 IQ points on me, let alone 20. But for argument's sake here, let's just say that she does. :)

IQ alone is hardly indicative of happiness and success in life, particularly in a system such as ours that goes out of it's way any chance it gets to not reward based on merit. That being said, she does have two things that can help her immediately out of the gates in the potential success department. She's female, and she's mildly disabled.

But success alone, also, is not indicative of happiness.

Like you've said about his parents time and time again, parents play a huge role in how messed up adults are. All the intelligence and breaks and freebies in the world aren't likely to make up for bad parenting, especially when somebody suffers from a mental disability that makes comprehension of the world around them a constant struggle. All of this, of course, can be overcome, but parents can definitely throw a lot of additional roadblocks to a happy existence, even those with the best of intentions at heart.

I'm hoping for your daughter's sake that you use the RWED as your personal toilet the same way that I have in the past, and that you're not really like the way that you are here in your real life. Because, sister, let me tell you... You regularly come off as a pretty terrible person if somebody were to judge you solely on their interactivity with you over the last few years here.

You also seem to love blaming all the problems you have on everything and everybody else in the world rather than owning up to any of them, which is a terrible lesson to teach if it's even accidentally being handed down to your kid. She could (and will likely) end up emulating all of this behavior as an adult, even knowing full well that she hates the fact that she is doing it. That's what kids do.

Seriously, good luck to her. I hope she is smarter than I am. But really, only if she doesn't have an unreasonably difficult road to success and happiness ahead of her. Because there comes a point for a lot of people where the intelligence doesn't matter anymore, and at that point, a good deal of us would probably benefit psychologically and emotionally from being a good 20 or 30 IQ points dumber than we are.

Vaping is a much different story.

Anybody who's going to be a guinea pig with that is rolling the dice. It's made in a lab.
