Been growing a while, Turkey was once an ally to the US, it was founded as a secular nation after the fall of the Ottomon Empire and was a friend of sorts to the UnitedStates during the Cold War against the Soviet Union, US bases inside Turkey as a counter to the USSR. During the Bush invasion of Iraq Turkey more or less started to say F-- you to Bush and conducted its own military operations against the wishes of NATO and the United States into Northern Iraq. During the Obama admin Turkey grows even more islamic with Erdogan arresting people...

at one time people even debated Turkey entering the EU or Euro area, all has changed

many probably do really see them as allies anymore

they have drifted closer to maybe Iran or Russia

situation is very complicated

Financial turmoil has spread into the crypto digital currency markets Altcoin ...also into other economies, it is thought perhaps German and British banks could have large Loans Inside the Turkish Economy
a digital money Ethereum Crashes?
Turkish now Increased Tariffs on US Imports Including Vehicles etc

So next we expect US President Trump hits back blasting them online and hitting them with Sanctions, Tarifs, Embargo ?

Turkey then slaps new tariffs on American cars, alcohol, tobacco, fruits, rice, cosmetics

https://www.liveleak.com/view?t=keYYu_1533996729

the Turkish are freaked out over this preacher, they blame some Turkish cleric living in the US for many of their problems and pastor who has been detained since on espionage charges
When Turkey started going to 'islamic' typically the military would step in and restore the Turkish constitution a vision by first president Mustafa Atatürk, the recent coup failed....there is a huge thread on it here on fireflyfans with all kinds of conspiracy who knows what really happened... a Coup failure? possibly with maybe Russia or Iran tipping off Erdogan and Turkey gets even more paranoid and islamic arrested hundreds thousands of workers, cops, teachers etc putting lots of people in jail

Also they typically have bombed US Allies the Kurdish who are key allies in the fight against ISIS or Daesh or ISIL or whatever these terrorists are called

and in other strange news an Arson suspect is now held in Turkey over a series of Sweden car bomb molotov fires, a shed load of cars exploded into fireballs in Swedish cities?

Turkey has now gone to arrest people who most negative remarks against the Turkish Lira, hundreds of people have been arrested as the Lira falls against the US Dollar.

Bitcoin is going to go down as one of the biggest scams in history.

My deepest congratulations go to any new millionaires who took advantage of being in the right place at the right time.

My deepest condolences to all of the losers who made that possible.

Don't forget there was an attempted military coup against Erdogan a couple of years ago. Many people suspect it was the USA that fostered the coup, and given ...

1) The USA's history of "regime change" in other nations, including thru the use of internal coups, and
2) That it was started by the Turkish Air Force, which is mostly USA-trained

... these suspicions are probably correct. It was Russia that alerted Erdogan to the coup and literally saved his life. You and I will probably never know. but you can bet your bottom dollar that the USA knows, and Russia knows and that Russia shared its info with Erdogan.

There's a lot more going on than Erdogan's push for a greater Islamification in Turkey, including the geopolitics of oil and gas, pipelines, the petrodollar, and the Kurds.

I stuck this in another thread, but it really belongs here.

Tom Luongo made several points ...

Both Trump AND Erdogan seem to be seeking some sort of dissolution from NATO. This attack on the lira is an artificial crisis that has nothing to to with any prisoner, since the guy's been in prison since the coup (2016) as a suspected CIA asset. The timing of his case is arbitrary; it's just a handy excuse.

It's Turkish BUSINESSES that have borrowed to the hilt, not the Turkish government or the Turkish Central bank. As Luongo says ... this is like the ruble crisis of 2015, which allowed Putin to determine who was working against him and who was working for him. I don't think Erdogan has any interest in bailing out businesses who were playing with dollar loans since he wants to de-dollarize.

It's three European banks who lent the money and are therefore exposed... BNP Paribas is one, I forget the other two.

Anyway, for an interesting take on the situation ...

Just because you're an ignorant doofus doesn't make me one. I followed the coup in real time and got reports from all over the world, including Turkey, Iran, Russia, and our own MSM. I don't know what YOU were doing ... but since you tend to focus on the pointless, I wouldn't be surprised if this went right by you at the time.

And... wonder of wonders ... you're STILL trying to ignore events! I see you got your fingers in your ears and your I can't hear you signs are already up!

Turkey Hit By Bank Runs, Currency Panic As Locals Sell Their Cars And Houses To Buy Gold While Lira Implodes
https://tradeforprofit.net/2020/08/turkey-hit-by-bank-runs-currency-pa
nic-as-locals-sell-their-cars-and-houses-to-buy-gold-while-lira-implodes
/
It has been an miserable five years for Turkish citizens who have seen their purchasing power slashed by more than half, and it’s only getting worse.

The Turkish lira has cratered against the dollar and most developed currencies, plunging from 3 TRY per dollar, to a record low 7.37 last week after a brief and valiant attempt at imposing shadow capital control by Erdogan (who is now de facto head of the Turkish central bank) failed miserably at the end of July, and not even a draconian hike in overnight funding rates above 1000% last week (to crush the shorts) was able to prevent a plunge in the Lira to new all time lows.

As their currency implodes (in a nation that is becoming increasingly more “banana” with each passing day as Erdogan solidifies his takeover of every government institution, in the process turning off any potential foreign investors) Turks are discouraged from material purchases of dollars to hedge the collapse in their native currency due to some of the strictest capital controls on the planet, which has left them with just one option.

As Reuters reports, Hasan Ayhan followed his wife’s instructions last week and took their savings to buy gold at Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar as Turks scooped up bullion worth $7 billion in a just a fortnight while their currency went up in flames.

The retired police officer, hit by vivid memories of the 2018 currency crisis which saw the Lira lose 30% of its value virtually overnight, was among those playing it safe as he queued in the city’s sprawling covered market, where a screen showed the gold price rise by one Turkish lira ($0.1366) in just 10 minutes.

Erdogan has alienated just about every Nation in the region, including Syria (which he attempted to invade by proxy), Russia (shooting down a jet, killing an ambassador), Saudi Arabia (releasing records of who killed Kashhogi), Egypt (by supporting the Muslim Brotherhood in Libya), Greece and Cyprus (by "exploring for gas and oil in their territorial waters, with military ships), France (by pissing off Greece) and the USA (by backing out of the Syrian proxy war and buying Russian missiles.. but mostly just by surviving what appeared to be a USA-inspired coup), and Iraq. I'm sure I've forgotten a few.

The only leader whose tits are in a wringer is Merkel, because of the migrant bkackmail.

Right now, the Russian pipeline is his only reliable source of foreign currency.

Other nations that have double crossed too many other nations, attempted to play nations off against each other, or interfered militarily, economically, or financially, or by proxy in too many other nations, will suffer the same fate.

That includes Netanyahu, Modi, and Trump.

If you can't be a reliable partner, if you can't be "agreement capable" then sooner or later all of the knives will come out and you will have no friends and allies

Well, bad for Turkey.

How is this relevant to the USA?

Turkey has no significant trade with the USA, so economically it's a wash. Many Turkish businesses have taken out loans in USA dollars, so I suppose there is a financial risk to the lenders there, but certainly not as big a risk as ... say ... China.

Militarily, Turkey has the largest army in NATO.
It hosts a USA airbase (Incirlik) which, at one time, probably had nuclear warheads positioned there, but after the (USA'S?) attempted coup against Erdogan, those nuclear warheads have prolly been removed.

It was a partener of convenience in the USA's attempt to depose Assad and destroy Syria- and meddle in the mideast in general- since it shares a large border with Syria, and smaller borders with Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan. and Georgia.

It also importantly controls entrance to the Black Sea because it straddles the Straits of Bosphorus and Dardanelles.

So if the USA wants to intefere with Syria, it has to do so from Jordan, Israel, or Iraq.

In other words, militarily, it is an important piece of the USA's interference in the Middle East but, frankly, I don't know what the fuck we're doing in Jordan, Syria, Iraq, etc. We have a commitment to protect Saudi Arabia (from Israel, of all places!) as part of our petrodollar agreement but that's about it.

Turkey is significantly more important to the EU, since it controls one of the major migrant pathways into Europe.

Altho, again quite frankly, if the USA hadn't destroyed Afghanistan, Libya, and Iraq and is attempting to destroy Syria, the EU wouldn't be facing such a migrant crisis.

Such is the nature of blowback.
