I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

And other such ideas.

In 2010, about 400 people owned more than the bottom half of the world. Today, its about 60.

Sixty people own more than half of the rest of the world! I'll bet not a single person here could name even ten of them. The important trends are well under the radar. Perhaps SECOND is right- maybe most of us are homo domesticus. We'd rather think about other stuff.

------------

Despite all of the congratulatory backslapping going on at Davos about "progress", and all of the handwringing about poverty, the reality is that those at Davos are the source of the problem they claim that they're trying to cure.

The Davos Blind Eye: How the Rich Eat the Poor and the World
Quote:

Throughout the unseen redistribution of wealth from the poor to the rich (now buried in much talk of “inequality”), ever more “market reforms” are enforced as “enhanced competition,” “liberalized de-regulation,” “reduced welfare costs” and “austerity programs to correct excesses.” The “excessive entitlements” of the system are all projected on the victims so that the truly insane entitlements of the richest to multiply their fortunes with no committed life function, value or coordinate but still more money-demand for them is somehow not noticed. This is yet another level of normalized big lies forming the ruling thought system.

When it comes to Davos, talk is cheap...
Quote:

According to Sam Pizzigati from the Institute for Policy Studies, the millionaires at Davos can do a lot more than talk about global inequality. If the global business elites gathering in Switzerland really want to do something big, they should simply stop dodging their taxes.

The top 0.01 percent in the USA are paying more taxes, finally.

We can accuse Davos of stealing from the world's economy and incompetently managing it, but the future is all too likely to be marked by stagnant living standards for most Americans because of the effects of slowing technological progress.

It’s a shocking prediction for a society whose self-image, arguably its very identity, is bound up with the expectation of constant progress. And you have to wonder about the social and political consequences of another generation of stagnation or decline in working-class incomes.

Of course, maybe we’re on the cusp of truly transformative change from artificial intelligence or radical progress in biology (which would bring their own risks). Let us hope for miracles taken from science fiction movies.
