I was taking a "wait and see" approach to the whole thing. I don't personally know any Syrians, and I expected the odd problem, theft and what-not, but jeez, the mass groping is on my nightmare list.
Gang raping a 3 yr old BOY, I mean, damnnnnn....

I got your back on anything Wish. I don't watch the news. I take care of me and mine and that is all. I'm happy to extend that umbrella to you and yours, although I don't know how effective it would be since we're miles apart. :)

The good news is, as crappy as things might be there by you, they're going to have to get past me and mine before they get to you and yours :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

DEVERSE

Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

I will admit that my experience with Syrians (as well as Jordanians, Lebanese, Palestinians, etc.) is likely tainted by being a peace keeper on the Golan for 9 months in 1975, and is probably a bit cloudy from the passage of time, but since hearing that there is some desire to have numerous refugees settle here in North America I have a number of misgivings and certainly concerns.

I find that the few individuals who have come to North America in isolation and who truly want to be in North America to improve their lives (or have specific purpose) have generally assimilated into the North American life style as much as their culture allows and are not specifically cause for concern. I have seen a few articles where Syrian refugees are not asking to come to North America, but are being offered the opportunity to come. There is going to be those who will come because they have no other opportunity to go elsewhere and their sole goal is to escape Syria. There is a huge difference between someone who wants to be somewhere for a specific purpose and someone who wants to be anywhere other than where they are.
Bringing a whole load of individuals whose sole desire is to escape from an undesirable situation, but not specifically to enter into and embrace a new life style, is going to result in huge and in some cases insurmountable problems.

One thing I do wonder about is that the US tends to be multiethnic whereas Canada is more multicultural. In the US an individual would identify as (for example) African American. In Canada they would simply state they are (for example) Nigerian. About the only culture in Canada that uses such an ethnic term is French-Canadian.
The question is will Canada wind up like Great Britain where the immigrants will be allowed to practice their culture and in many instances in opposition to the national culture. Not likely to happen in the US in my mind as Americans hold a much higher/greater sense of national identity; but politicians here are terrified of being branded “racist” and bend over backwards to meet the demands of various cultures, and often at the expense of other cultures, including the national culture.

Regardless, bringing in a huge load of people who have no respect for anyone or anything other than themselves and their culture is going to be as disastrous here in North America as much as it is proving to be in Europe.

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face;
With stars to fill my dream;
I am a traveler of both time and space;
To be where I have been

I say boo to the original post. Alarmist bullshit

Diverse - from what I understand of the USA there are many cultures that keep their cultural identity and live peacefully and happily as Americans.
Me I'm all for diverse cultural practices so long as your culture does not ask you to commit violence against another's..

its all about to get very real soon

First of all, being "Syrian" isn't a race, it's a nationality. Calling someone a "racist" because they don't like Syrians is a bit misdirected.

On the other hand, not liking "Syrians" is ALSO misdirected. One of the nicest people I knew was a Syrian Xtain student worker, who clued me in to what was happening in Syria (that Assad was protecting minorities). He has family in Syria, in Aleppo, specifically. The best way of helping THEM is to support Assad, stop funding and arming the wahhabi nut-jobs, and then work towards a political solution and redevelopment.

What's happening is that there are Syrian Sunni takfiris (as well as foreign fighters from Iraq, Libya, Morocco, Chechnya etc) who really DO have that 9th-century thing going.

And not wanting to import that is not only not "racist", it's wise.

Nitpicking terminology.

"While race and ethnicity are considered to be separate phenomena in contemporary social science, the two terms have a long history of equivalence in popular usage and older social science literature - and the word ethnicity is often used in a sense close to the traditional sense of "race" dividing human groups based qualities assumed to be essential or innate to the group (e..g. shared ancestry, shared behavior). Racism and racial discrimination are often used to describe discrimination on an ethnic or cultural basis, independent of whether these differences are described as racial. According to the United Nations convention, there is no distinction between the terms racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination, superiority based on racial differentiation is scientifically false, morally condemnable, socially unjust and dangerous, and there is no justification for racial discrimination, in theory or in practice, anywhere.[10]"

If you prefer, it's prejudice to make assumptions about people based upon their nationality or religion, based upon mainstream media reporting.

If how people were depicted in the media were 100% correct, then all Americans would be murderous, gun crazed, religious fanatics.

You objected to WISH'S over-broad generalizations about Syrians, and I objected to your over-broad generalizations about "racists".

It's a nit-picky point, perhaps, but I see your response play out in the EU. When people - women and girls, specifically- object to being ogled, groped, and sometimes even attacked, they're called "racist", and "far right". Soon, they'll be called "Nazis" (if they aren't already). And if the government and the mainstream press keep suppressing the news and sacrificing their safety in favor of some geopolitical objective (which I can't even fathom what that is) disguised as political correctness, those who are objecting and being called "racist" and "far right" for their troubles may very well become Nazis, for real.

It's a knee-jerk reaction on WISH's part, and also on yours.

You want to "help" the "refugees". I get it.

There is something so blindingly insane about a European policy of callously killing them "there" (Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Syria) only to get all involved with trying to save them "here" (the EU) .... have they lost all sense?

I see my views on immigration, which came about because of the forces propelling illegal immigration into the USA, being validated by the EU experience: IF YOU REALLY WANT TO HELP, THE FIRST THING TO DO IS STOP MAKING LIFE HELL ON EARTH FOR PEOPLE ELSEWHERE.

That means not engaging in wars or destabilizing governments for specious reaons, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY SOUND AT THE TIME, WHETHER IT IS "R2P" OR "KILLING THE TYRANT" or "ANTI-COMMUNISM" or "SAVING THE GAYS".

As I keep posting, weapons are only good for destroying things. Destroying willy-nilly the infrastructure and social structure of a region for ANY reason will only degrade people's lives. You'd better be damn sure, before you start, that you can "nation build" for at least 30-50 years afterwards, and leave the place in better shape right quick than when you started. Otherwise, you really haven't "helped", have you?

Police in the Netherlands now prefer not to think twice before visiting homes of those who criticize a government policy on migrants, including via social networks, media reports said.

Critiquing the Dutch government's policy on migrants via social networking websites and elsewhere is now considered a criminal offense in Holland. Dutch police have raided critics' homes, media outlets reported, citing a recent mass protest in the town of Kaatsheuvel and how some citizens of the town of Sliedrecht had been targeted by the authorities for voicing their criticism of mass migration online.

I think labelling all Syrian refugees as guilty of henious crimes, and citing only that notoiriously reactionary right winged rag the Daily Wail, and declaring "NO SYRIANS WANTED HERE" in the title of a thread is about as racist as you can get.

Replace Syrians with "Jews" or "Blacks" and see the response.

I agree that the US and Allies policies have created some major cluster fucks. However, I believe you can't just ignore the humanitarian crisis that is unfolding, literally you can't ignore it. The borders are breaking apart with the sea of disenfranchised humanity. It has to be dealt with in some out.

The other part of my signature is that I don't believe is sharing problems, I believe in solving them.

So, let's solve the problem instead of all just huddling in the mud together and sharing the scraps of blanket that we're allowed. Since YOU and I didn't start this problem, it's not up to us to fix. Here's what has to happen:

1) First, have Turkey, KSA, the USA (CIA) stop arming and funding jihadists in Syria, Iraq, Libya etc.
2) Then, pressure the involved parties into accepting a political solution for Syria- a solution that doesn't involve having a foreign power (yet again) determining which governments can "stay" and which have to "go".
3) Commit to redevelopment, with generous funding from the parties who destabilized the region to begin with.

THe USA and its regional allies have spent over a decade making this problem it's not going to be solved in a year. But it can be solved, if the motivation is there.
