Yep, hubbs got ANOTHER ticket.

Every time he goes driving at night around here they pull him over. It's that he's 6 foot..... three hundred pound.... shaved big dude. They single him out as a threat EVERY time. This one was for doing ten miles over, like everyone else was doing.

He's been pulled over at least forty times in the last eight years. Gotten so paranoid he has a gun in the car with him at all times.

Profiling.

Long hair man, driving a VW bus, with deadhead stickers on it, headed to a town where the Grateful Dead will be playing in the upcoming weekend.

Odds are that this individual, with an out-of-state license plate on his vehicle, will have some amount of controlled substances ?

Wish, I have to say, there's something else going on with your story that isn't making it to this thread. 40 times in 8 years ? Really? I've not had 1/2 that many encounters in 30+ years of driving.

Oh, he was going +10mph over the limit ? Doesn't matter that 'everyone else was doing it '. If he was doing something wrong, then he was doing something wrong.

Slow down, and drive during the day, if it's that big a deal.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Hubby has gun and is stopped by the police many times a year. Try to imagine the police seeing that gun. What do you think will happen next?

My belated advice: get $1,000,000 life insurance policy on Hubby with you as the beneficiary.

Lucky you.
It got to the point where he would get pulled over every weekend just going to work. Maybe it's the new car, they don't know who it is again. When they get to the window and ask for the license he says right off that he has a permit to carry concealed and has a gun in the car.

You think just because it don't happen to YOU it don't happen???

And don't give me the hypocritical "breaking the law" crap either, because if you go the speed limit here you are gonna CAUSE accidents with people swerving around you like that.

"Hello Officer! I have a license to kill." Obviously the police will then have absolutely no reason to continue harassing Hubby: "Sorry, Sir. I didn't realize you were James . . . James Bond. Say hello to Her Majesty for me."

How likely is that scenario where a concealed handgun makes a bad cop respect Hubby more?

Like WHAT genius? He has NO RECORD, was in the army, and actually applied to BE a police officer at one point.

Hell, he's been walking through Wally world and people have picked fights with him because he looks so intimidating. Guys at work have done the same thing several times. They've even admitted that they picked on him because he's big- later when they got to know him. He has a resting face that looks mean mug, but he's more civil than most around here...

PS. HE HAS TO WORK THIRD SHIFT. No way around that right now.

You are trying so hard to convince me he doesn't NEED a gun and that being around one is more dangerous, and you are totally right...if we lived in a perfect world. We don't. EVERY OTHER CAR HERE HAS A GUN IN IT. We live in a world where movie theaters, malls, offices, and even relatives houses have a tendency to be unsafe.

I don't like it either, but I'd also hate ta get shot and have no defense when other people start shooting. Hard to say "Wish I'd been able to fight back" WHEN YOU DEAD.

He has unfortunately been so traumatized by people picking on him that he no longer feels secure without a gun. If I can't convince him to leave the gun at home, you really think YOU can??

All human beings profile, we would be dead if we didn't. It's called judgement- without it we would try to pet a lion because it is technically a cat.

Is it fair? Hell no, but it is natural, and in many ways it is needed. It is natural to identify a 6'3 250+ male as more threatening than a 5'4 woman..... I'm not defending people by saying its okay to act on bias. But profiling is human nature....

Only 40 times in 8 years. I certainly had 40 times per year during a 10-year span.

Is this town small enough that you can visit the city council meetings and ask why the cops are so lazy that they cannot find any real miscreants to hassle? Actually, never mind that. A friend has every snowflake for miles around plowed into his driveway by the local highway road crew.

In Texas, we are approaching a perfect world from a different direction.

I live in Baytown, Texas. The State Senate passed an Open Carry Gun Law last week. Yesterday the House committee approved the bill. Soon the Governor will sign it.

Once that law passes I'll feel so much safer knowing that I am as well armed as any police who profiles me and stops me while driving.

If there is anyplace I cannot take a gun, I won't go there anymore because I won't feel safe being around a bunch of unarmed civilians.

What I find rather puzzling is that someone who is normally part of the "right to carry" crowd suddenly finds that carrying is wrong .... when it's meant as protection from the police, and not meant to intimidate suburban patrons at Starbucks.

It's those flexible morals you gotta watch out for on this board!

WISH, getting a lot of tickets (especially moving violations) can drive up your insurance rates, so aside from the pain-in-the-assedness of getting pulled over all of the time and the inherent danger of getting shot ANY time, there are pocketbook consequences.

But to some extent, this is a bit self-inflicted on your husband's part. My hubby is 6'3" and at one time weighed 300 pounds, VERY physically fit, and was NEVER pulled over by the cops. When he was younger (still big, still fit) he was pulled over all the time.

The difference is that when he was younger - in the Vietnam War days - he had long hair (a ponytail, in fact) and a beard. He was CONSTANTLY getting pulled over and being called a "hairbag"; at one time a cop broke his taillights and then issued him a fixit ticket.

Now, I know that your husband can't voluntarily shrink his height, and it's also unlikely that he will ever lose sufficient weight to go from being "big guy" to "skinny as a rail", but .... does he HAVE to shave his head???

Shaving your head, unlike height and sex, is voluntary. I know it's wrong for cops to treat all shaved-head guys like homies, just like it's wrong for cops to treat all barely-dressed women on the street as hos ... yeah, you should only respond to what people DO, not what they "look like they might be doing" but .... why put a target on your back?

-------------

My hubby says I should take this comment back.

Sig actually makes the same point I was making earlier about profiling a long haired single guy ,driving a VW Bus, with out of state plates, which is covered w/ Dead Head stickers, en route to a city where the Dead are getting ready to play.

That band, and others, are well known to attract fans who follow them from gig to gig, and a vast majority of those fans do in fact partake of illegal drugs. Anyone riding in a van or bus like that might as well paint on the side " HEY COPS! PULL ME OVER !! " .

Wish, there's clearly something obvious the cops are seeing that is some how not registering w/ you or your hubby. Nothing about being 6'3 and 300 lbs is, by those criteria alone, reason to be pulled over.

As I said, there's more to this story.

If he gets pulled over constantly for speeding, then maybe he should stop speeding. If he has been caught numerous times for it, he's probably in the system as a recidivist speeder.

Like this woman I knew who lost her licence for going through red lights, I think it was her third or fourth time she'd been caught. Geezm it's hard to be sympathetic, just dont do it.

If you know the cops have you on their radar, then just follow the law. Cant be too hard to drive at the speed limit, can it?

the other thing to do is get your speedometer checked, maybe it's out and so he's speeding by default. do you have any speedo checks on the roads around where you live? my car is under by about 8km.

I gotta say 10 miles over the speedlimit, which is 16km here would get you a reasonably hefty fine.

Went too fast down a hill - got a ticket ( this one I probably could have / should have fought, as cops aren't suppose to camp at the bottom of hills, I've heard, but they do it anyways )

Had a headlight out - got a ticket

Had a plate not match the vehicle - got a ticket

Ran a red light - got a ticket

Ran through a stop sign ( formerly a yield sign) - got a ticket...

All legit, none of it " profiling ", what so ever.

This was well over 8 years though.

The cops are brutal on speeding here. we have speed cameras and redlight cameras, so you're gonna get stung if you do it habitually. Also you get points deducted off your license for each infringement depending on how far over you were, and an eventual suspension.

I get that it's probably about revenue collection, but habitual speeders are a menace as well, so meh.

Last speeding ticket I had was on boxing day a few years ago travelling to the family christmas. I got stung when the speed limit changed about 3 times in a kilometre on a stretch of road, and there was a camera in an unmarked car. I'm certainly careful around there these days.

sometimes the only choice you have is to change your own behaviour and habits rather than railing at the unjust world. probably worth a try.

People are sick of these ridiculous speeding tickets and sick of being harassed. $200-300 for going ten over IS unfairly punishing people who make less and is out of line with the "crime" and only encourages police departments to rip off people for personal gain, and not for crime deterrence. If we're white and feel WE get pulled over too much, imagine how black and Latinos that pulled over twice as much feel. I'm sure they don't feel they can say anything either, which is why they shoot people...

I've always thought the amounts were ridiculous, even before I had ever gotten a speeding ticket.

That if you break the law you might get caught and punished?

Now, I agree the police here seem to be pretty much acting for their own gain. And then there are whole cities that enrich themselves by creating and enforcing laws to consume their people, like Ferguson. And the chances that Mr/Ms Doe might get into the inner circle of knowledge and so reliably change their circumstances are slim to none.

But there is the vote. If you don't like they way things are being run - vote them ALL out. And keep doing that till things get better.

I'm not the one protesting here, that'd be you. And yes, until given an ACTUAL real reason not to, I will side w/ the cops.

That doesn't excuse or deny a-hole cops. I know they exist, and I have had the displeasure of dealing w/ them. Some, it doesn't matter how much you " yes sir, no sir ", they still get off on telling folks what to do.

But MY experience is that those dicks are the exception, and far from the rule.

PS. Not that it matters, but the reason he was speeding was because we only have the one car and he was trying to get home so I could drive my grandma to her eye appointment, because she's going blind and can't drive herself.

But hey, a crime is a crime, eh?

WHY he was speeding is irrelevant.

And I hate whiners. I just do.

Punk talk show host Mike Gallagher was telling a story where he got into a road rage incident with some lady because HE was on the phone, and not going the damn speed limit. He ADMITTED that he was A- breaking the law by talking on the phone and B- was being a nuisance on the road by not focusing on his driving, but his excuse ?? He had a family emergency, and was trying to deal w/ it , via the phone, and some " rude " lady came up along side him, honked her horn, and gave him the 'hang up' gesture !!!

And this a-hole has the nerve to call the LADY out for being rude! HE was the one in the wrong, and it's not even close ! All sense of chivalry and doing right by the law should just take a back seat because of HIS personal needs! How the hell was any other driver to know the nature of his phone call ? Guess what ? IT DOESN'T MATTER ! You drive on public roads, you abide by the law, or get the eff off to the side of the road and do your phone talking there.

Just as he's not special, neither are you, or ANYONE when driving on the road. Unless your car has flashing lights on it and is either an ambulance, firetruck or cop, you don't get to do as you damn well please on the roads.

Sucks, I know, but that's life.

FWIW I've been on the freeway talking to a relative trying to find out which emergency room I need to get to b/c the ambulance drivers were still debating while en route. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do...

Doesn't matter who you're on the phone with, if you start swerving across the lines, go too fast or too slow or aren't paying attention to the road, you're risking the lives of others and yourself.

No one's excuse is better than anyone else's. And other drivers have no way of knowing if you're talking to your BFF, your mistress, ordering pizza or telling Jack freaking Bauer how to defuse a nuclear bomb.

IT DOESN'T MATTER ! Hang up and drive.

Dammit.

But if you're driving well it's all moot.

No question about it.

But like the little sibling who sees others doing it, most drivers can NOT do it, even though they think they can.

Have you thought of the mind your own business rule??? Switch to the other lane, honk your horn or whatever and drive on. You don't have the need to go flippin' anyone else off just because they are on the phone or driving slow. Unless their driving is an actual imminent threat to yours, whatzitmattah?

I've seen some people get just livid at that and it's ridiculous.

The road does not belong to you. If you're overtly distracted, drunk, or otherwise impaired, you put the lives of everyone around you in danger.

Wow.. the arrogance at your 'mind your own business' comment is truly stunning. Didn't think you were so selfish until now.

And where did I ever say I flipped off anyone who was on the phone ?

Got news for ya, every time you start 'er up, you are in danger, even if everyone involved is an expert. Shit happens. If you are driving around pissed off at the dude you passed five minutes ago, you are just as much distracted. It's up to you to put your big boy pants on and drive on and deal with whatever comes your way or try to control the actions of every bad driver out there.

Personally, if they wanna drive distracted and crash into a tree, it's none of mine. My responsibility is controlling MY car.

Something tells me the Hollyweird version of them that's in your head and the reality would be VASTLY different. Every person on this planet is a little weird in some way.

The reality is usually "The squeaky mouse gets the cheese."

You just can't see anything from the mouse's position. But then think you are Da Man, the wheel. Everyone should do as you do, right?? I mean, you'll protest, but secretly you think that's true.

That's the REAL reason you think so many people are whiners, because they aren't like YOU. What you think is reasonable is the very opposite to others. Maybe it takes too much time and effort for you to understand anything else. It's just easier for you to say "STOP WHINING." We all deal with others in our own way. I usually stay away from people completely rather than try to take the time and effort to get anyone to see what I'm talking about. Most other people's approval means VERY LITTLE to me.

But you don't. You need other people to think you've got yourself together. You're not the smartest cookie in the bunch, but you think you are the most hardass, doncha?

You could weigh a thousand pounds, it wouldn't matter to me. You could be a slob, you could "whine" all day, I wouldn't care. Only thing that matters to me is if you are civil or not.

All that matters to you is that people don't bother YOU with their baggage. And you call ME selfish...

Hubby has a receding hairline, and he doesn't shave his head. He has 1.5" cut on top, tapered to the neckline, and a neatly trimmed beard and 'stache. (I cut it and trim it myself.) I think it looks good, and he doesn't get pulled over.

What your hubby is saying, in effect, is that he'd rather look like a "Don't mess with me" homie (and get pulled over multiple times, and carry a gun) than like what he is: a big guy with a receding hairline. If this is all about vanity about his hairline, then .... ???

IT'S HIS CHOICE. But it IS a choice. If he doesn't want to stop shaving his head and he doesn't want to get a lot of tickets, then he MUST obey all traffic laws at all times. I agree that the cops are being assholes, but that is a FACT of life, and you have to respond to it.

I, personally, have gotten a couple of speeding tickets. I wasn't doing anything more or less than what other people were doing, I just happened to be the one who got pulled over. It's no defense saying "I was speeding just like everyone else, so either they all should get tickets or I shouldn't."

You people have been so brainwashed to accept this crap you say nothing. Why do you think people are executing cops now?? People are sick of these ridiculous speeding tickets and sick of being harassed. $200-300 for going ten over IS unfairly punishing people who make less and is out of line with the "crime" and only encourages police departments to rip off people for personal gain, and not for crime deterrence. If we're white and feel WE get pulled over too much, imagine how black and Latinos that pulled over twice as much feel. I'm sure they don't feel they can say anything either, which is why they shoot people...

I've always thought the amounts were ridiculous, even before I had ever gotten a speeding ticket.

You gotta an attitude on you, that's for sure. No, not brainwashed, just got enough common sense to know that you can either whine on about stuff you can't change, or change what you can. It may not be fair, it may not work the way you want it to, but it's clear that if your husband speeds, he will probably get caught and fined. So the easiest choice is to not speed, for any reason. Unless it's life or death, and it so rarely is, a few minutes later will make no overall difference and will be better than copping another fine.

And no, getting caught for being a habitual dickhead on the road, is not comparable to ongoing harrassment suffered by members of society due to ingrained and systemic prejudice.
