Last week on Amazing Race, one couple who had already missed about 6 or 7 trains, and was about 5 trains behind the leaders, were booked for a bullet train and were taking a selfie with the train in their background when it took off, without them on it.
Yes, they were eliminated by the end of the day.

Seems you're missing the point.

They're in the physical vicinity of their friends, but are they really WITH them ?

I think Einstein may have secretly figured out time travel. Or he had an actual Palaintiri, or seeing-stone.

Or he was just pretty darn smart.

YO! DUDE!
That's what YOU think!

I work in a lab ... an analytical lab. We use computers all the time for things you haven't even dreamt of. Not only do we use computers, we have to change with the technology. In my working lifetime we've gone from wet chemistry with some instrumentation, to instrumentation, to advanced automation, to databasing the data and fully networking our lab, to exploring crowd-sourced environmental data (from citizen iPhones).

I've troublshot more "technology" than you can shake a stick at. For sure, I know more about "technology" than you do, and probably more about computers. (HINT: Have you built your own? Ever written a progam?) Clearly, I know how to access the internet. I can do searches. I can view Twitter all I want.

What I DON'T do is check my Twitterfeed 1200 times an day, or constantly check in with my FB friends, or post the latest drunken stupor on Instagram.

Finally, someone's said it!!! This is what's currently driving me mad at work!

I work in a warehouse, loading white goods onto trailers and vans. This by necessity is a team effort, the team consisting of a picker, a forklift driver (who moves the goods to the loading bay once they're picked), a scanner to check the goods are correct before loading, and two loaders, of whom I am one. But what kind of "team" has the other loader and/or the scanner twittering away when they're supposed to be working?! I once saw my fellow loader on his phone doing whatever in the middle of loading a washer onto the trailer! I've seen a forklift driver doing the same WHILE HE WAS DRIVING!!! GAAAHHH!!!

I hate what smartphones and Twitter/Facebook/whatever have done to our society! Einstein was right!

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

The fact that you think those are standout achievements only emphasizes your backwardness. It's funny to hear you boast about things so definitively when you have no clue who you are talking with... wait... I mean it's just empty-headed bravado.

And you know this - how? The only thing I get out of your post is how quickly and easily you post lies and claim they're facts. You revealed something about yourself maybe you should have kept hidden. So, is this like a lot of your other 'facts' you so proudly post?

FWIW - in 1974 I was backplaning a computer. Oh, you don't know what that means? Poor baby. Four years later I was writing a LIMS. Don't know what that is either? Look it up. Now I'm upgrading our system to (securely) network with 'the cloud'.

And that you are so adamantly defensive of you and the others who ceaselessly tweet drivel - dude, you don't seem technological. You're just plain addicted.

Oh, MRG probably thinks he's part of a "Twitter revolution", like the Arab Spring. Some people think that if not for Twitter, the uprisings wouldn't have happened at all. What most people don't realize is that half of the Egyptian hashtags originated in Israel. It's incredibly easy to tweet misinformation.

Another problem with Twitter, FB, and Youtube etc is that they can create "flash-in-the-pan" movements. Remember Kony 2012? The Ice Bucket Challenge? What did they accomplish?

Nothing.

Merely following/ retweeting/ clicking on a button isn't effective. People actually have to DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL in real life... like go to a demonstration and risk getting shot at maybe, or go on strike, or at least stop buying a product.

So, on a more metaphysical level, when I said that people were mesmerized by their own digital reflection, I didn't just mean that they were living their lives through their own duck-faced selfies on the inet.

"In the old days", you had to get along with your family, your neighbors, your classmates, your co-workers no matter how "out there" they (or you) were. You had to listen the same lamestream news and watch the same TV shows, no matter how much you disagreed with them.

But with a world-full of opinions available now, it's far too easy to surround yourself with like- minded people: select the tweets that you want to follow, the friends you want, the opinions you agree with. Think of the most obscure or illegal or just plain bizarre activity, and you can find a nice comfortable group to do that with.

Yes, the internet has huge potential for communication, but most people don't communicate with people who are different, they communicate with people who are the same. They stick with the agreeable and the convenient, and thus they lose the ability to communicate at all.

-----------------

On another note, I don't make any claim to be a computer expert, but I know someone who is - certainly more than MRG thinks he is.

This person, who knows pretty much everything there is to know about computers (including AI) is rather disparaging of them, and the use that people have made of them.

One of the things he said is that Einstein didn't have a computer. Neither did Newton. Or Maxwell. And yet, we still use their equations.

The other thing he said is that computers are like guns in the hands of babies. They allow people to calculate all kinds of technological things (like nanoparticles or AI) that they don't understand and can't predict.

Werner Herzog isn't as famous a German as Albert Einstein, but then Einstein didn't film a documentary with his warning about technology.

Herzog filmed stories of serious traffic accidents caused by texting and told by the surviving victims.

"I have the impression that the images that surround us today are worn out, they are abused and useless and exhausted. They are limping and dragging themselves behind the rest of our cultural evolution. When I look at the postcards in tourist shops and the images and advertisements that surround us in magazines, or I turn on the television, or if I walk into a travel agency and see those huge posters with that same tedious and rickety image of the Grand Canyon on them, I truly feel there is something dangerous emerging here. The biggest danger, in my opinion, is television because to a certain degree it ruins our vision and makes us very sad and lonesome. Our grandchildren will blame us for not having tossed hand-grenades into TV stations because of commercials. Television kills our imagination and what we end up with are worn out images because of the inability of too many people to seek out fresh ones." -- Werner Herzog from Herzog on Herzog Paperback – July 9, 2003

Niether - it's criticism. As people age they become more and more reluctant to change, to learn new things, and often become crabby, lazy simpletons. They live in the past because it's easier.

You sound like one of the young, incompetent, lazy simpleton know-it-alls - or at least you regurgitate that viewpoint. You even manage to fail in usage of your spellchecker that you seem so dependent upon.
Until people age and mature they remain more and more reluctant to learn, unable to view the world outside of their own selfish desires and fishbowl existence, and often become dependent upon their toys, becoming lazy simpletons. They cannot conceive of the past because they only care about themselves and what little they have learned, while still deluding themselves that they know everything, and cannot learn anything from those with more experience. They would rather burn their hand on the stove than learn from their older sibling who already burned their hand.
You think you are the only person in the history of the world who has heard of "multitasking" and think you are the master, overestimating your competence, and discount the very simple reason that it has become outlawed. Many understand that your overconfidence is simply God's way of weeding out the stupid, but it still irritates the population because you kill innocents along with your retarded self and friends. If you insisted solely upon being the next Nominee for Darwin Award, it would be far more palatable for us - but since you insist upon killing others with your stupidity it becomes our concern.

No, I'm against texting while driving. I think it should be outlawed everywhere. I even think using cellphones while driving for anything should be against the law.

When the car radio was introduced, people freaked out: "In 1930, laws were proposed in Massachusetts and St. Louis to ban radios while driving. According to automotive historian Michael Lamm, “Opponents of car radios argued that they distracted drivers and caused accidents, that tuning them took a driver’s attention away from the road, and that music could lull a driver to sleep.”

Even the Auto Club of New York agreed. In their 1934 poll, 56 percent deemed the car radio a “dangerous distraction.”

"I was nearly killed by some guy who was texting while driving. It was 10 o’clock in the morning. I was returning from the gym. Driving on a side street, I saw the car coming towards me swerve gradually, then fully, into my lane. Though we were both going about 30 mph, it all seemed to be happening in slow motion. As the car got closer, I saw the young guy who was driving, holding his cell phone up on the steering wheel with one hand, while with the other, he was typing. He didn’t see me, or the road in front of him. I laid on the horn, and skidded onto someone’s front lawn to avoid a head-on collision. The guy swerved back into his lane and drove away." -- http://mentalfloss.com/article/29631/when-car-radio-was-introduced-peo

The only thing I get out of your post is how quickly and easily you post lies and claim they're facts.

Show me one example - come on genius, just one.

How about this one?

... it's just empty-headed bravado.

That's a lie??? Her boasting about something a 12 year old can do is empty-headed bravado - a definite fact.

Apparently G divulges too much - here we learn that he is merely a 12-year-old pretending to be adult.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Maybe we should ban books and newspapers?

Are these people friends? Have they gone to this place to be with each other and enjoy a special occasion together? And then proceeded to ignore each other and their surroundings?

The problem with your 'analogy' is that it isn't.

So, I realize this isn't my conversation but ...

Have you built your own (computer?)
Have you?

Ever written a program?
Ever?

access the internet ... do searches ... view Twitter all I want
What do you do that's so different?

And, I have to ask - have you found out what it means to 'backplane a computer' yet?

G, have you ever troubleshot a gas chromatograph- mass spectrometer- flame ionization detector? An ion chromatograph? Redesigned and rebuilt analytical instruments? Helped design a labwide database which is intuitive enough to be used without detailed instruction, and flexible enough to accommodate additions in the future? Designed several new analytical methods?

That's "technology", and that's the "technology" that I know a lot more than you, certainly. I use computers because I have to, not because I'm an expert but because it's part of my job (where almost all data is acquired by, processed with, and stored in computers)

So, have YOU ever built a computer, or written a program? Hmmm... you've never answered those questions. Is it possible that you're the one who's deflecting?

The smart phone is just a security blanket for big kids. Oh, and BTW ... if a nine-year-old Microsoft "expert" is your prime example of how young people just know technology better ...

Well, I don't want to pick too hard because he IS just a little kid from an impoverished nation, but everyone who's ever done anything important with computers doesn't use Microsoft. It's buggy, insecure, unpredictable, and lacks horsepower.

Do you think that the world wide web uses MS-based servers? That AI runs on Win8? That large databases or distributed computing runs on Windows? Everybody who does anything real with computers knows that REAL experts don't do Windows!

Like I said, I'm not an expert, but I know one. He's older than me - and that's saying something!- and if he doesn't know something about computers, it really isn't worth knowing. He's spent an entire LIFETIME learning, and not just about computers. Some day, if that unfortunate little kid gets unstuck from Microsoft (poor sod) he might actually do something worth note.

But here's the lesson you should draw from this: Nobody can spend an entire life learning if you think you already know everything.

DEVERSE

Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

I have taught university classes for just over 22 years, about 12 weeks a year as a sessional lecturer. When I started teaching, the course had a compulsory module on computer usage that was being phased out as most of the students were relatively competent on using a computer and getting them up to speed for the course was not difficult. The course has not had a computer module for close to 20 years.
The last little while there has been discussion of implementing compulsory computer classes again. Why? Because the majority of students entering the course have extremely limited computer skills, especially when it comes to CAD, databases, spreadsheets and even writing papers. The use of "writing centers" or "essay clinics" is also now common place at universities as students have poor writing skills and limited writing skills on a computer.

And it isn't just a local issue either, I hear the same thing from contemporaries across North America.

As for smartphone use, yes the students can text, tweet, instagram, facebook, selfie, surf the web and snapchat and outside of class have their face buried in their phones, but most need assistance in setting up the apps the university provides to assist them while at the university because they have to do a bit more than just download them.

The ability to use technology isn't a condition of age or generation; it's a matter of the thickness of the bozone layer the individual is surrounded by. The bigger issue is those who lack the self discipline to put the phone down and it is mostly the younger generation who have this problem. And it isn't just at university either, I see it when I am at work as well. Younger crew members are terrified to leave their phones for any length of time, even when responding to a call.
When mental health professionals (psychiatrists) recognize it and put a name to it (nomophobia- fear of being without your smartphone) obviously there is an issue. And it is predominant in the 18 to 34 age group and not because they know how to use technology, but because they lack the ability to separate them self from their "soother".

Do I have to quote your own posts back to you?
OK:

"For sure, I know more about "technology" than you do, and probably more about computers. (HINT: Have you built your own? Ever written a progam?) Clearly, I know how to access the internet. I can do searches. I can view Twitter all I want." I guess it makes sense for someone as conceited as you to not think that is empty-headed boasting.

Look, 9 year old Microsoft genius:

The only question is: what took you so long?

I'm curious about your intelligence though... where did you find these?

"beyond lying online, and Twitter, FB, Youtube, and Instagram..."

do you have examples? Are they in the same thread where you lied/mistook me using MSM sources? You haven't addressed that yet - hiding?

Any examples? Denying? Avoiding? Deflecting? Lying?

The above part of G's post shows his complete lack of comprehension or working knowledge of quotes, belying his supposed superior skills.

I guess when you proclaim that you are a windows expert then we will all know you are retarded.

It's not all the youngsters, it's middle aged people as well. What's the story with people not being able to turn their phones off, or not answer them. I've been in meetings with people who insist on taking calls. I feel like saying 'unless someone is dying, do you think that call could wait 30 FUCKING MINUTES'

Technology certainly has changed the way we interact with others and the world around us, and I think it's sometimes frightening because the changes are so fast, we dont have time to consider the implications. And by the time we do, the genie aint being stuffed back in the bottle.

So here is the conundrum. We can communicate instantaneously with people all over the globe, cheaply too. But do we feel more or less connected than say 20 years ago? And secondly, has that communication added value to our lives. I think of this every time another beheading video does the round. Or I stumble across some troll spitting abuse and vitriol.

I wanted to bring up again the ideas of the computer expert that I know also. He's concerned that people are substituting calculations for understanding. Even people who have tremendous scientific computer skills quite often get entrance by their models. Climate change, for instance. This expert, who has designed cluster computers for complex modeling and who keeps in touch with some of the supercomputer climate modelers, has said many times that everything you need to know about climate shift can be put on the back of an envelope. The smarter our phones and computers get, the stupider we get, it seems.

It's a little but like substituting "contact" for communication. Just because we can CONTACT a gajillion people doesn't mean we're actually communicating.

I read an recent article on a study done by psychology dept in Waterloo who looked at a fairly large number of people ... 886, I believe .... and found an inverse correlation between smart phone use and IQ. Buried in that article was the summation of what nearly every article on learning and thinking has said, in one way or another, about human beings, and it went something like this: Humans have always sought to make thinking easier. Well, humans have always sought to make everything easier. But we evolved in a world where we exerted ourselves, and if you take that our of the equation then humans wind up being mentally, physically, morally, and socially flabby.

I don’t believe I said it was ONLY the younger generation, I said “it is MOSTLY the younger generation who have this problem”; referring to the addiction to phones.

Every age group has individuals who are addicted to their phone, but it isn’t as prevalent as it is in the younger (18-34) age group. Additionally, younger people tend to be socializing while older persons are more likely to be involved in doing business. Their fear of being away from the phone is that they will miss something important to their business; the youth are afraid they will miss a picture of someone’s lunch or what their “friends” are up to. Not an excuse, simply a difference in addiction.

Blaming technology for the failures in society is something I reject. The technology isn’t supposed to use people, people are supposed to use technology, and hopefully for the better. Blaming technology because people misuse it or are abused by it is just a poor excuse used by those who are weak willed and undisciplined and thus are controlled by technology rather than in control of it.

I am much better connected today than I have ever been and regularly communicate with people in North America, in Europe, in Australia and in Africa. Some is business, some is social. The ability to communicate instantly and cheaply has added value to my life and career. The difference is I see the phone as a convenient and advantageous tool that serves me and my needs/wants rather than something I must serve and pay constant attention to.

"... humans wind up being mentally, physically, morally, and socially flabby."

I was thinking the other day that people used to depend on other people - your family, tribe or village - for survival. In that sense your connection with other individuals was robust. But with the advent of complex economies (due to technology) people depend on systems. As long as they have a way to plug into the system for survival, they don't need to relate significantly with others. I think I'd call it the beginnings of being socially flabby as a species. And then of course you add the ultimate in non-contact technological connection.

SAGAN: We are releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide, increasing the greenhouse effect. It may not take much to destabilize the Earth's climate, to convert this heaven, our only home in the cosmos, into a kind of hell.
