- The slaughter of sparrows. As a means to mobilize the masses for a common good, keeping the sparrows from eating the crops. This is the sort of insanity that comes w/ brainwashing a country.

Sparrows die off, which gave bugs free reign to reproduce and infest... the crops.

They literally created their own worst nightmare. All for the good of the State.

This is in good agreement with what a co-worker (Chinese refugee) told me, as well as Chinese self-promotional films and books written by western supporters (Away With All Pests). I actually remember seeing films of peasants pouring (useless high sulfur steel) from backyard kilns. The film misses only one point - there was a specific reason why the harvests failed in 1959. I don't remember if it was drought, but it was some non-policy related issue, but the remainder of the film is accurate, as far as I can tell.

Although the Great Leap Forward policies that created the famine were reversed, the Cultural Revolution which followed was an attempt to rekindle enthusiasm and redirect attention from previous errors. It was a nightmare of all against all, and endless "criticism and self-criticism" sessions of those suspected or insinuated to have bourgeois tendencies, which often ended in death. But curiously, many participants in the Cultural Revolution remember it as a time of great idealism and look back fondly at those times.

This just goes to show what happens when you hold policy above humans, and convince everyone else to do the same. And how gullible most people are.

No one besides Obama and his inner circle of radical leftist sycophants ever gave a shit what the idiot Anita Dunn thought about anything.

Mao's so-called Cultural Revolution was an ideological purge, a bloodbath that imprisoned, tortured, and killed millions of Chinese. It was the follow-up to his disastrous collectivist agricultural policies that led to the famine that killed tens of millions of Chinese. But at the Palace, they never ran out of General Tso's Chicken or Peking Duck.

And this is what pisses the hell out of me. We have an inner circle for Obama, PRAISING freaking Mao, the biggest mass murderer on the planet, and barely a peep is made about it. Obama doesn't even have to say anything in her defense. The MSM just glosses over it.

Rewind to when Newt Gingrich was Speaker. His official House historian, a college professor herself, who denied federal funding of a program which omitted telling both sides of the Holocaust story.

Christina Jeffery, who in no way was praising or supporting the NAZIS, none the less thought it important to include the party's point of view on that time period.

Newt up and fired her, rather than ignore the cries of 'outrage'.

Republicans always jump through hoops to appease the noisy Left wing media, whether the cause is legit or not. Trent Lott ring a bell ?

Frelling cowards.

Rappy, you had ONE PERSON who WAS in Obama's inner circle.... really? First of all, the operative word is "WAS" and there was only ONE. Is she the WMD of Obama advisors? A single person, no longer there, who turns into a vast threat in your mind?

Do you LOVE making the same mistake over and over again?

Do you suppose you can talk about something important WITHOUT turning it into a diatribe against Obama? Yanno this WAS an interesting thread until you veered into a ditch.

I mean, hell, we could have looked at how some people gain absolute power. We could have talked about how far a leader can go before people revolt. (Pretty far! Just look at Pol Pot)

We could have talked about how to tyrant-proof societies - and it takes a lot more than guns! It takes individual and collective brains to realize that you're being manipulated against your own interests.

We could have looked at the specifics of how Mao came to power and how he eventually focused it all on himself, into a "cult of personality".

We could talk about whether there were any centralized policies that would have worked better: Was the failure a repudiation of central planning globally, or was this just bad planning specifically?

We could have talked about how the western media was controlled, and how so many outsiders were fooled. Could westerners have detected the problems occurring even from the self-promotional films that the Chinese Central party put out?

We could have asked whether similar massive internal failures could happen again without anyone knowing, or does the presence of mobile phones and the interent guarantee that such events will be noticed.

So, if you really want to talk about Obama, why not just start another thread about him?

No, not just 1 person. They're ALL a threat, Sig. From Obama, Van Jones, Anita Dunn... all of them. She was just one who happened to speak out publicly about Mao, and pull a Gruber.

There was a direct tie in w/ Mao, his policies, and the WH Communications Director who PRAISED that monster who murdered 10's of MILLIONS of humans, all for the greater good. She also held that position on the Obama campaign, so it's not as if she was just some wayward political strategist, looking for a short time job.

Anita Dunn is very close to the inner circle and in sync with how this man thinks.

Again, sorry if that annoys you.

My GUESS is that it only annoys you that her views are known to the public, at all.

There are a lot of reasons to criticize Obama. Yes, he's a horrible person... responsible for bombings, drone strikes, civilian deaths, destabilizations, Constitutional violations up the wazzoo. But this is a thread about Mao - a thread you started, btw- with a very interesting film. Very informative, thank you!

So can you please keep your idee fixes located in other threads? There is so much more that could be discussed here!

So.... starting with the last question first- do you suppose similar egregious cleansings could occur in the world and not be noticed?

When this woman, Anita Dunn, praises Mao, I want folks to fully understand of who it is she speaks. Far less is known about Mao , here in the West, than of Hitler. The video is ground breaking in that a Chinese citizen took it upon herself to go out and find survivors of this horrific policy. That sort of policy which Ms Dunn so happily praises.

But it's not just Ms Dunn, it's others. Like Elizabeth Warren. She was the one who uttered the phrase " you didn't build that " , and Obama picked up that call as his own. They are ALL of like mind.

It's not a question of whether OTHER horrific atrocities can or have occurred in the world. They have. But here we have an Obama insider, Anita Dunn, praising the policies of one particular dictator. My intent is to show just who it is she's talking about, so we can understand a bit more of who SHE , and how those around her, really view the world.

I think the failure was technical. If the specific dictates had been better - and consequently if harvests had improved, and if steel production had been meaningful - no one would look at at that period as a failure.

I do think it highlights the gullibility of the free western press to staged news.

What exactly was staged when a Chinese citizen tries to accurately report on the death of 10's of millions of people ?

Be thankful for Mao. Just think where the Chinese would be today if Mao had been a competent ruler. Among approximately 3.79 million Chinese now living in the United States, 2.2 million were born in China, according to the report by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA).

Slowly, Americans are moving to China. All told, 1,202 foreigners received the equivalent of a Chinese “green card” — making them legal, permanent residents of the world’s No. 2 economy. www.forbes.com/sites/kenrapoza/2013/09/15/slowly-americans-moving-to-c

You must have missed it in the movie. Mao created idyllic countrysides stocked with attractive women paddling canoes in the places where the western press would stay - real Potemkin villages. The western press then reported what a success Mao was.

Be thankful for Mao. Without Mao, they might have stayed away from the USA. Lots of people left for the USA from Argentina, for example, because of Juan Perón and Isabel Perón and a military junta. Bad government always motivates people to get around and see more of the world and make new friends in faraway places.

Well, I've not yet watched the full video, but I misunderstood your meaning. Agreed, the Western press dutifully reported on what they were shown. Probably not as intentional as when CNN agreed to favorable press for Saddam in trade for preferential treatment. But I agree, the West was greatly in the dark to the particulars of Mao's policies. Those that dear Ms Dunn praised so much.

Nazi Germany is not a good example because millions of Germans hated Jews, particularly A. Einstein with his Jewish physics, and thought Germany was justified in running Europe as pleased. Germany didn't need Hitler; it was already a crazy place.

It is a truism that a few thousand dedicated and organized people are capable of wreaking a country even when millions are opposed in a weak and disorganized fashion. Take Ireland.

If we're still talking famine, the English and Anglo-Irish families who owned most of Ireland and had limitless power over their tenants can be thanked for a million deaths in the Irish Potato Famine and the resulting Irish emigration to America. During the famine, Ireland was shipping food to England because the English had more money than the Irish tenants. Thanks to the Famine, about 36.2 million Americans—11.9% of the total population—reported Irish ancestry in the 2008 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Be thankful for Fidel Castro. An estimated 2.0 million Cubans resided in the United States in 2011, according to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey. You can't get in touch with Mao, but Castro's still around. Hurry, before he dies, and send him a Hallmark thank-you card for Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, Cuban Republicans in the Senate.

Rap

I gotta point out that the press has been gulled many times - I think because they assume they're so perceptive and b/c they can't imagine anyone going to lengths to fool them. It's a failure of their assumptions/ intelligence.

But also, they willingly gull the news consumer far more often, especially nowadays when they're expected to make the company a profit. So they get their news the cheapest way possible - by news release, remove anything that will put them in conflict with tptb, and trim out anything that will drop their viewership. And voilà - infotainment. Where you get the feeling you're being informed, while in fact you're being narcotized.

But I also gotta say - the fact that you didn't 'make it through' your own post confirms to me that you don't look for information, just bias confirmation. You came to one thing you agreed so strongly with, you couldn't wait till the end to post it here.

Monarchies and democracies have also done terrible things - for example the Potato Famine listed above.

More specific atrocities by the British Empire:
http://listverse.com/2014/02/04/10-evil-crimes-of-the-british-empire/
and another treatment of the topic of British Empire brutality in Kenya specifically:
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2012/apr/23/british-empire-cr
imes-ignore-atrocities

Here's a part if it:
Caroline Elkins, a professor at Harvard, spent nearly 10 years compiling the evidence contained in her book Britain's Gulag: the Brutal End of Empire in Kenya. ... Her book is fully and thoroughly documented. It won the Pulitzer prize. But as far as Sandbrook, James and other imperial apologists are concerned, it might as well never have been written.
Elkins reveals that the British detained not 80,000 Kikuyu, as the official histories maintain, but almost the entire population of one and a half million people, in camps and fortified villages. There, thousands were beaten to death or died from malnutrition, typhoid, tuberculosis and dysentery. In some camps almost all the children died.
The inmates were used as slave labour. Above the gates were edifying slogans, such as "Labour and freedom" and "He who helps himself will also be helped". Loudspeakers broadcast the national anthem and patriotic exhortations. People deemed to have disobeyed the rules were killed in front of the others. The survivors were forced to dig mass graves, which were quickly filled. Unless you have a strong stomach I advise you to skip the next paragraph.
Interrogation under torture was widespread. Many of the men were anally raped, using knives, broken bottles, rifle barrels, snakes and scorpions. A favourite technique was to hold a man upside down, his head in a bucket of water, while sand was rammed into his rectum with a stick. Women were gang-raped by the guards. People were mauled by dogs and electrocuted. The British devised a special tool which they used for first crushing and then ripping off testicles. They used pliers to mutilate women's breasts. They cut off inmates' ears and fingers and gouged out their eyes. They dragged people behind Land Rovers until their bodies disintegrated. Men were rolled up in barbed wire and kicked around the compound.
Elkins provides a wealth of evidence to show that the horrors of the camps were endorsed at the highest levels. The governor of Kenya, Sir Evelyn Baring*, regularly intervened to prevent the perpetrators from being brought to justice. The colonial secretary, Alan Lennox-Boyd**, repeatedly lied to the House of Commons. This is a vast, systematic crime for which there has been no reckoning.
* Sir Evelyn Baring

** Alan Lennox-Boyd

Of course Spain and its conquest of the New World is another outstanding example.

And finally, when I have the time I'll get into the role of the US around the globe.

Mao Tse-dung. One of Anita's favorite political philosophers.

So anyway...

Reviewing the rest of the video, some items stuck out.

All private property now belonged to the State - " You didn't build that ! "

Families were torn apart, and kids were raised by the State - Julia's World. Where all the needs of a young woman are met by the ever present GOVT services

Lying to fool the public - ' The American people are too stupid ' - Jonathan Gruber

Falsifying reports - From Benghazi, the ACA, Fast and Furious, IRS scandal..

The similarities go on and on. Not only do we have a wholly corrupt man in Obama, but a system, the MSM which willingly goes along with his agenda.

The 'news' aspect of all this is how the young lady actually went out and interviewed the survivors of this atrocity. This isn't some bureaucratic stat sheet, handed down for academic scrutiny, but actual live human beings, telling the tales which had only been whispered.

Only whispered?

There are troves of books and accounts from this era. I'm not sure what you are talking about.

It's an interesting part of history, but hardly ground breaking, or unheard of unless you've never been taught or interested in Chinese history.

and about a billion references at the end.

But if YOU'VE suddenly become interested, then carry on this discussion.

Sometimes you gotta ask WHY to the great tyrannies of the world. What led to them getting to power, the Maos, Stalins, Hitlers etc.

A quick glance at the wiki page produced this statistic.

Quote:

A 1929-1931 survey of farm households in China indicated a life expectancy at birth of 23.7 years for females and 24.6 years for males, a crude death rate of 41.5 per thousand (slightly higher than the birth rate), and an infant mortality rate of more than 30% in the first year of life.[14] This survey is not representative of China as a whole because it only included farm households and because it was “taken in parts of China that were relatively calm and prosperous, not involved in active warfare, and rather firmly but recently under the control of the Guomindang (Kuomintang) government”, but it does give a rough idea of mortality in China at the time.[14]

That's the kind of conditions where extremism flourishes, when the traditional ways of life lead to unspeakable conditions for the great majority.

China and Russia were both similar in that they had a massive peasant class with no power, poor and oppressed. If I lived in that era in those conditions, communism would have seemed a reasonable bet.

Do you find the personal tales of other people from other atrocities equally compelling? Does it have to be video or are you willing to read it? If you read stuff, you might want to try "Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number" about a man;s experience as a prisoner of the Argentine junta. Or "Kaffir Boy: An Autobiography", the story of growing up black in apartheid South Africa. For a fictionalized version of how apartheid was maintained you could watch "A Dry White Season". For a real-life personal account of torture by SAVAK, the secret police of our friend, the enlightened, westernize Shah of Iran you could watch the video below.

It is news that history is being rewritten, with the bias of libtards. Or maybe just overwritten.

Chinese history, connected to our present. It's all interconnected. Knowing about one helps us to understand the other.

MAGONS, that's a great point. People who live in such horrific conditions.... equal to the NAZI DEATH CAMPS... would be willing to tolerate conditions that WE would consider barbaric if it meant the chance for improvement. There was a REASON why there was a revolution in China - the first against the Emperor and the second against international capitalism.

Also, pointing to Germany before Hitler, and it's period of hyperinflation beginning in 1921. AT the beginning, about 60 German marks were equivalent to one US dollar. By 1923, one dollar was worth 4.2 TRILLION German marks. There is a story about a man who took out his entire life savings from the bank, bought a cup of coffee with it and shot himself. No wonder bankers became public enemies in Hitler's propaganda. Extreme conditions lead to extreme responses.

So, are there CURRENT abuses of human rights - Starvation? Mass incarceration? Torture and brutal punishment?- that are flying under the radar? Is it possible that such events could happen in this day and age of cellphones with videos where everybody supposedly knows everything about everything?

Let me give you an example....

We've all seen - or at least heard about- the beheadings of American and European reporters or aid workers by ISIS, and - by extension- we are aware of the beheadings by ISIS of Kurds, Druze, Yazidis, and other minorities and resistors throughout Syria and Iraq. But are we just as aware of the beheadings in Saudi Arabia? Beheadings there are the common form of administering the death penalty. Of course, Saudi Arabia doesn't exactly put videos online of their practices, making it easier to evade world censure. Nonetheless, beheadings are officially carried out.

So, who is the winner for the most beheadings?

Select to view spoiler:

MEXICO. Because Mexico has been nearly taken over by drug cartels, there are more beheadings in Mexico than in all of the Middle East combined. And it's not like the narcoterrorists don't broadcast. If you want to see the "fastest mexican beheading caught on tape" feel free to wander over to thejuggalonation. But don't click on their links unless you like getting sickened and also tracked by the NSA.

The point is that these events happen in plain sight, but because our attention is captured elsewhere ... or because it doesn't fit into our memes .... they go undetected.

Get the idea? see if you can come up with other "plain sight" atrocities.

It's well - known that N Koreans face starvation from time to time. Despite the grand buildings of the capital and the happy citizens on display for the (few) foreign visitors (like Dennis Rodman), starving short-statured refugees fleeing into China, and satellite photos tell of widespread but well-hidden crop failures in the insular and secretive nation.

But other famines rarely make the news, or their cause is misrepresented as a natural phenomenon when the reality is that the famine was caused by war or other policy failures, just like Mao's China. (Somalia and Ethiopia are two examples).

So, the question is, where is hunger and starvation most overlooked?

I think there are many more complex problems, other than just hunger and starvation and in someways more horrific.

There's the plight of these women. A whole village of prostitutes.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/jan/09/gender.humantrafficking

And the whole issue of human sex trafficking.

Which brings us to modern day slavery

Thanks MAGONS. That was my point: There are atrocities committed even today, in the plain sight of the international media, if one only cares to notice.

Most of the time, the reason why we "notice" atrocities is because our media finds it convenient to carry the politicians' water. So we "see" or become aware of SOME events (like the war on Yugoslavia) and almost entirely miss other events which are even larger- like the Rwandan genocide, which only gained traction in the western press when it was fully underway.

As far as mass starvation is concerned, I think the honor for the most overlooked group of people is

"children".

I don't think you are allowed to criticize Communist China or the Democtratic People's Republic of Korea. Those are Communists, Socialists and other Democrats, which the MSM are stenographers for. You could be taken away for exposing the truthful underbelly of the liberal beliefs.
