Seth Godin (Among Others...) Says We’ve Been Scammed

In the beginning of his book, Linchpin, Seth Godin says “I grew up in a world where people did what they were told, followed instructions, found a job, made a living, and that was that.” That’s the world even people my age understand, because we were taught that too.

Seth goes on to say that today, “We live in a world where all the joy and profit has been squeezed out of following the rules.” I happen to agree with him, at least on the joy part. Seth has observed that “the easier people are to replace, the less they need to be paid”.

Ever hear someone complain about not getting paid enough but the only thing they’re getting paid for is to show up and follow instructions (which is almost everyone we know, by the way)? How many people do you know that will gladly get paid to show up and follow instructions? I can think of at least three-hundred. So no, you aren’t special and you don’t deserve a raise just because you show up every day and follow directions. Big deal. So will thousands of people lined up outside the door. And they’ll do it cheaper.

Seth tells us that just over a century ago, the system we know today didn’t even exist. We grew up thinking it’s always been there, but it hasn’t. This system where, according to Seth Godin, people “show up, work hard, listen to the boss, stick it out and get rewarded” has only been around for a hundred years or so.

And wait for it. Seth tells us, “that’s a scam” and that if we’re in that system, we’ve been scammed.

Interesting.

I've observed the opposite. I've had family members who have pursued the path less well trodden if you like, following their hearts and going it alone. But the risks didnt really pay off in the long run. One is now completely broke after a number of failed business ventures.

The people I know who are doing the best were lucky/canny enough to get a reasonable education, get into a stable job that had good prospects and excellent superannuation. They also got a foothold in the housing market before it blew sky high. They may not be amazingly wealthy but they have good lives, travel a lot and are well set up for retirement.

Mind you, most of them had the benefit of free tertiary education, cheap housing and a stable employment market, all of which are fond memories and dreams.

Yes, Jack. Now if only I could get someone to explain to me why salmon fish is called salmon.

The words you're looking for are "predatory" and "wage slavery," and they're a rather common topic of discussion on the board. I'm glad you could join us.

An examination of five family histories shows them entering the trades as early as the late eleventh century. Four of the families were already in possession of land at this period. Remember David Copperfield stories, they project a time when capitalism was practiced in England. I have some problems with Seth Godins' premise the way you laid it out. I do agree with us being trained to meet the needs of industry which is stated eloquently by Sir Ken Robinson in his talks about education.

“In the eleventh century we are already dealing with abuses of economic and political power in Arras, in particular to the mishandling of the public finances. The recurrent communal unrest is interpreted as being at least in part a protest against excessive profit margins in the cloth industry.”

Far too many come to conclusions based on the last one hundred years ignoring a vast array of knowledge and experience, and by doing so base their judgments on information that would fit onto the head of a pin.

It's a delusional fantasy to expect a good life handed to you on a plate. You bitch and moan about others who have succeeded, without knowing anything of the hard work and sacrifices THEY'VE made to get that life you so undeservedly covet. What you call "wage slavery" has been good enough to afford me everything most people want out of life.

That is not so. Research always shows people get pissed because the game is rigged. The more you have the standards or requirements to achieve change. Cheating becomes easier and so does taking advantage. If you want to talking about complaining:

I am a job creator: I am entitled to complain about the economy even when my stock price, my portfolio and my profits are at record levels. I am entitled to a healthy and well-educated workforce, a modern and efficient transportation system and protection for my person and property, just as I am entitled to demonize the government workers who provide them.

Any of this remind you of anyone here so far? Follow the link, read on.

Technically all problems have happened before, the question is whether it's a continual slide or more of an egress and regress cycle. And if the later, when did it start?

Our current trouble seems to stem from the powers that come from corporate consolidation with vertical and horizontal integration. If you're asking when that became a trend, 1900s doesn't seem too off an estimate.

If that was directed at me, since you quote my "wage slavery", I haven't particularly bitched or moaned about others who have succeeded. I don't particularly have a problem with some people succeeding and having more success than others.

My problem is more that the system is set up in such a way that you have to play a certain game, and it's a game that I consider harmful and exploitative. You yourself talk about all the sacrifice - aren't we supposed to have something called civilization now that's supposed to not make life about kill or be killed? Shit, we can't even have people homesteading or living off the land anymore because of property taxes. That's a huge change. And because people can't do that anymore that's why we have all that welfare you despise.

Everything has to come from on high now. Everything. And yes, I'm sick of it.

In going back we can see a need for government to protect it citizenry from both outside aggressions as well as inside (corporate). The citizens of a country have to have a way to provide for themselves and their families. Look at the condition of those countries that provide very little to it's population. Don't kid yourself into thinking that it can't happen here.

It did happen here.

Don't confuse warlords stealing humanitarian aid supplies and conflict ridden nations that are in chaos due to a power vacuum with what might happen with slightly less government oversight than we have now.

Similarly, don't confuse laws with authoritarianism, or runaway exploitation with utopia. I like my groundwater unpoisoned.
