In the pilot episode, did they irradiate part of a planet?

That's a fusion engine on the end of that firefly, and it spews out hot plasma.

Some of the shorts from the original writers even suggest there's definitely hot radioactive components in a firefly engine.

Seems like it's probable that some of the wash from the engine is radioactive, and most of the time they seem to go to hard burn only in space.

It also looks a little like they set off a chain reaction and ignited the air behind them.

Thoughts?
